Bullying - Online and In life in General

Originally Quoted by Schillaci

No, I've seen bullying. I know it happens, and compared to some of the experiences I know about, lots of peoples stories of bullying are, patheticly dramaqueenesque. Which frankly in todays standards of what bullying is, we're all bullies.
-----------------------------------------------------------

What stories were those then huh!
Do you feel for people at all,no matter how insignificant those
stories seem, they are a big deal for them.

---------- Post added at 03:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:00 PM ----------

I have seen tonight how nasty people can be to others, and some people have no place on a forum.Where do they get off.
I'm no angel,but christ these people are damn right bloody rude!Whatever happened to respect?Now its a thread about arguing,the snydest remarks,hes a bully,hes not a bully,and dictionaries.Hmm.

Son, you see when you pick one quote and ignore what else I said about everybodies problems seeming much bigger, because they're their problems, you're being intentionally misleading. As have several people who have tried to attack me in this topic.

I'm not sure if you think I was referring to anyone that had posted stories of their own bullying I wasn't. Because I have no idea if they're true, or if people just want attention. I was refering to stories I've been told, or I've witnessed, most of them pathetically over the top, drama queen, give me attention, stories.

When you're woken up at 7 am every morning, with a shotgun pointed inches from your face, and your stepdad screaming at you to get up and get the breakfast made, and get ready for school. And when you leave you don't leave with a hug or a kiss, you leave with punch in the guts, which often lead to vomitting your breakfast. And as soon as school ends you have to rush home, because you found that trying to be with your friends after school, led to a beating when you got back 'home.'

When you know someone went through that(and much much worse which I will leave out as this is a family friendly board), hearing someone claim they were bullied because someone shouted 'fattie' at them once a week for a few years, tends to sound ridiculous.

On the contrary, this forum is declining because we backed off, we allowed people to argue more, we asked them to not get so offended at things. And some people decided that that makes it okay to call other people stupid, and lazy, and ignorant. And it's not. (I don't need a dictionary to see that.) And a lot of good members left the board because they didn't like having to deal with people who get their jollies by trying to make others feel small.
People can disagree and argue without it coming down to "You should never post here because you're an idiot". That's what's pathetic - that there are people here who can't seem to say anything without it becoming, "I'm smarter than you so don't argue with me." If you want to be able to belittle others instead of proving your arguments with facts, then there are plenty of other boards out there that you can do it on. That is not what this place has ever been about.

I'm not even going to reply to you here Buffy, because to you, all I am is a lying crap talking belittling bully - of course none of these are insults..

To me if I were meaker of a person, less aggressive and I posted several times in a forum and each time I was told that I was my opinion is ridiculous, that I am lazy or too ignorant to read, that I might want to check my dictionary because I am way off base, that I have no merit, that I was stupid for thinking the way I thought, all by the same person, well I would call that person a bully, and at the very least, completely condescending.

People say this board is going downhill and that people need to grow a thicker skin only when the situation is not about THEM. However, when people don't get their way, or when people don't agree, suddenly it's the end of the world, and "thicker skin" seems to fly right out of the window.

Once again taking what I said and twisting it completely out of context(and not understanding part of what I was saying), just as what most people have done here trying to attack me. Ignoring the gargantuan double standard being applied to my posts and the posts about me, which, for the third time now, I never wanted this topic to be about me.

Its arrogant to defend yourself, and express your ideas with conviction, but it is not arrogant to accuse someone of being intentionally misleading by using this topic to 'air dirty laundry', nor is is apparently ignorant to post an assumption in a topic when the person hasn't properly read the topic.

And Brandon, if I start a topic about piano playing, and asking how to improve my skills, and someone posts that the real reason I'm posting in this topic is to pick up chicks becuse chicks love piano players, in the context of that topic, that post has no merit. Is that an adequate metaphor for you to comprehend?(not to mention that I asked the admin if what was posted had any merit to the discussion)

If someones called fattie for a few years by the same person, that is bullying. And it aint ridiculous even when compared to the shotgun thing.

Schillaci is a sucker - apparently
I think that cases of abuse in any sense (verbal, physical, sexual, etc.) are ALL bad. None of that behavior is okay, but if you are going to be against the most extreme behavior, you cannot be okay with the light behavior like name calling. You cannot pick and choose which abuse is okay.

People have killed themselves over name calling. We've all experienced it, and in those states, maybe there are those who have experienced worse, but all I know is that when the names were directed MY way, I felt just as bad.

I know a good friend who was went through MUCH worse than you just described (a refugee from Ethiopia) and she doesn't carry a chip on her shoulder about what she went through. She knows it was awful, but she also knows that ANY kind of suffering, ANY kind of namecalling, ANY kind of bullying is NOT OKAY, but it does exist.

The idea of this thread was to discuss bullying. Others have stated their views. Stating what they FEEL is bullying, and you have shot them down. You have expressed that their view of bullying or what have you is WRONG?! That is what is bothering me. THAT is what makes you arrogant. This has not been a very open dialogue. It's not as if I am the ONLY person who feels this way? Others have said the same thing. Perception is reality.

You can't have it both ways, if you feel you should be able to say WHATEVER you want and want others to toughen up or get over it because we weren't abused, molested or whatEVER, then you must give others that same respect.

Awesome post!!!
So I just spent some time rereading the whole thread, as suggested.

And what I find most interesting is the clear sea change in this thread. It started out with a good discussion going on. Funny how people could disagree with each other, and work out disagreements and misunderstandings just fine.

(not to mention that I asked the admin if what was posted had any merit to the discussion)

Oh, please don’t let my lack of response to that one lead you to believe that I agreed with you. Oh, on the contrary. Let’s take a look at that little exchange, shall we?

I'll quote the whole post instead of just the sound byte you quoted:

Dude, you're really coming across as though you're hacked off about something that has obviously gone on. And the easiest way to deal with it is via PM, rather than continuing in a thread where you accept but disagree with member's ideas. This is a circle and we can go round and round all day long, but we'll be covering the same ground.

You asked for people's opinions. You got people's opinions. If you're looking for a way to justify or clarify the term bullying you might as well start writing a book. As you've just said todays standards of a bully is different. In the past it was the kid who stole your lunch money, nowadays people can be bullying verbally and virtually.

Speaking of internet Bullying. Just this week in the UK, a girl was imprisioned for a death-threat of another girl as her facebook status.

So let’s look at that post. A) Yes, she’s calling you on the fact that when you came back into this thread after starting it, it does look like you’re out to settle some personal score. Both times I’ve read this thread, I came to the exact same conclusion. Granted, I have a little more information about it than EWR does. You can disagree with her if you want to, and tell her she’s wrong, but it does merit saying that if you were indeed pissed off about something, that taking it to that person rather than making thinly veiled comments about it in this thread, is a better course of action. B) She suggests that trying to narrowly define bullying is near impossible. Fair point. C) She comments on how the definition of bullying (for some) has changed over the years. Her opinion, but a valid one. D) She gave an example of something on the internet that had been construed as bullying or some variant thereof. Clearly does add to the discussion and could have been a jumping off point for further discussion.

So as you can see, there was a lot of merit in that post, that had very little to do with attacking you.

And now let’s look at your response:

And you're coming across as someone who was too lazy/ignorant to read the first post in the topic. Communication is how we exchange thoughts, ideas, discuss subjects. Its the whole point for the forum. To communicate. I've posted 3 maybe 4 times in this topic for the above reasons, perhaps you shouldn't have bothered.

Hmm, how do you know she didn’t read the first thread in the post? She’s commented multiple times in this thread. How come it’s just this post that makes her lazy/ignorant? Also, what part of her post even suggests that she hasn’t read the first post? How would reading the first post change her read on the situation? If it’s because you said it’s not about you – you also say in the first post that you feel you were unjustly called a bully. I wonder why she might not really believe that this is not about you, after reading that and your subsequent posts?

The condescension is a really nice addition to the name-calling though. Way to try and make her feel stupid. And I’d like to know why her opinion is worth so little that she “shouldn’t have bothered”?

Okay, let’s continue, I then said this:

Hmm...one could argue that your post is a perfect example of berating other people into not challenging you anymore...

I stand by that. It is a possible read of your exchange. I also never used the term “bully” here, though subsequently I seem to be accused of calling you such. But let’s see, you called EWR lazy, ignorant, and stupid enough to need the word “communication” defined for her. Oh, and told she shouldn’t have bothered to post in the thread. Hmm, sounds like berating someone to me.

Then you said this:

What part of what she said, with regards to my posts in this topic, had any merit Buffy? Absolutely nada. Not to mention she misunderstood what I meant by todays standards.

Then you say, "I'm sorry, but I think you misunderstood what I meant by 'today's standards'. What I was trying to say was..." The first question I have already answered above. .

Alright, so now we move on the “Schillaci is so persecuted” part of the thread.

Anyway, this thread is indicative of the very problem with this website, the 'cry wolf' nature of bullying, specifically regarding people who don't agree with you.

See, if you reread the thread, there was actually a lot of disagreeing going on in it, that went along just fine, until people started to be called names. Yes, sometimes people can get offended because of a misunderstanding. But sometimes, a spade’s a spade. And I do take offense at this, because I’ve defended BOTH of your rights to be here for years.

If you don't agree with someone and use words like ignorant or lazy, thats not bullying, that is having a different opinion and using words that you believe to be in the correct context.

Come on EB. Seriously? You seriously think he wasn’t making a derogatory comment there?

If you don't like being called ignorant, then you need to get your namby-pamby arse into the real world because everybody is ignorant of somethings.

That’s true, but saying, “And you're coming across as someone who was too lazy/ignorant to read the first post in the topic” (especially when that clearly is false) is different from saying, “I think you might just be ignorant of the fact that I have been bullied myself.”

Look at Schillaci response to EWR (who if you read the comment his response is for really ha misunderstood because Schillaci has explained in the thread what is going on and that its a discussion, not about something that happened involving him).

I’ve already dealt with this part above. He says it’s not about something involving him but it is easy to think differently based on his comments in this thread.

Break down what your actual problem is with his comment?
There isn't actually anything wrong with it - calling someone ignorant of the facts is not wrong, particularly if they are giving an opinion on something and they haven't read the whole debate.
Calling someone lazy is not wrong, particularly if they could simply read a few comments to make them able to understand what is going on.

I’ve read the whole thread (twice) and I came to the same conclusion as she did. And I’ve said already that calling someone ignorant and ignorant of the facts are two different things and it was not the latter that we saw here.

Nah, this thread shows the exact reason this forum is declining, one incident has happened and people want to jump on a bandwagon.

Actually, this thread was going along fine until the two of you started making this personal.

I say grow up, get a tougher skin and go outside a bit more!

So why does everyone else need to get a thicker skin, but Schillaci has every right (in your opinion) to go after EWR the way he did? Shouldn’t he just have gotten a thicker skin?

I personally love how members of a forum can get irate over people suggesting that members should get a tougher skin, then get very aggressive.

Hey don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.

The people who need to get a tougher skin are the very people who can't seem to appreciate that being called ignorant isn't being rude, it is stating a fact.

Again, depends on how you say it.

If it upsets you that people use words correctly, then you really need to toughen up.

I can use the word “asshole” correctly. Doesn’t mean I should.

People here might like to live in a world wear everything is sugar-coated and then claim to be bullied by someone who cuts through the bullshit and says it as it is, but thats not anyone buts the one wh is offendeds problem.

Wrong. It’s everyone’s problem when a couple of people think they can treat others however they’d like and then hide behind saying they’re just “telling it like it is”.

Heck the owner of the forum started a thread about how young is too young to watch Buffy and she had to start it by acknowledging that it might cause arguments.

Don’t twist my words to suit your case. I wasn’t concerned that it would start arguments, but that like in this thread people would get personal about it rather than arguing points of view. There’s a difference, which some people still don’t seem to get.

Thats the place you guys have created, thats the forum that currently stands because people get so easily offended by what others say.

Its pathetic, it really is.

Yes, it is pathetic, that people are treated as such that they have to get offended at all.

Schillaci said:
I'm not even going to reply to you here Buffy, because to you, all I am is a lying crap talking belittling bully - of course none of these are insults..

Oh, I'm sorry, maybe you need to toughen up. And after making that statement, are you honestly still going with this facade that this whole thing is not about a personal incident that happened to you? Because funny how you made that same comment to me before, during that personal incident…

Once again taking what I said and twisting it completely out of context(and not understanding part of what I was saying), just as what most people have done here trying to attack me. Ignoring the gargantuan double standard being applied to my posts and the posts about me, which, for the third time now, I never wanted this topic to be about me.

First, glad that you are allowed to take what other people say and twist it but you’re going to criticize someone else for allegedly doing it.

Second, no one here was attacking you, until YOU started attacking others. Maybe YOU need to reread this thread.

Third, you never wanted this to be about you? Then why do you keep making it personal? And double standard? You want to be able to call other people whatever names you want to and then expect us to keep others from calling you arrogant? Doesn’t work that way. Or are you suggesting that the people disagreeing with your earlier posts were attacking you?

Its arrogant to defend yourself, and express your ideas with conviction, but it is not arrogant to accuse someone of being intentionally misleading by using this topic to 'air dirty laundry', nor is is apparently ignorant to post an assumption in a topic when the person hasn't properly read the topic.

If you reread her post, she wasn’t accusing you of anything but having a personal issue going on that would better be resolved by talking to the person (let’s just come right out and say it – me) rather than trying to get it resolved clandestinely in this thread. And as said above, there’s nothing to suggest that she hadn’t properly read the topic.

So here's the bottom line.

Feel free to discuss bullying. Try to define it, say what it is or isn't. But everyone here is entitled to their say. Leave the personal comments and condescension at home.

If you don't think discussing bullying has any value, then don't discuss it. But other people have the right to talk about it if they want to.

If you just want to dump on this site, go elsewhere. It's clearly established that here we expect people to treat each other with respect. If you don't like that, or can't do that, go elsewhere.

There is plenty of rudeness and cruelty in the real world and people don't deserve to have to deal with it here too for no reason. "Sugar coating"? Maybe. But it's much better than having to read what's happened to this thread all over the board.

If that is the case, the person is not a 'bully' but merely someone telling you he truth!

And the truth is the same to everyone? As long as it's true or fact in your eyes it isn't bullying? Since I'm easily confused let me give you an example and see if you agree with it or not. It's easy to take things the wrong way after all. Lets say that a person is overweight or even fat and you decide to tell them that multiple times a day for a certain amount of time. And only doing it to make this person feel bad about it. Is that or not bullying? After all this person is overweight/fat. So its just telling them the truth right? What about if you think someone's ugly? If you see it as a fact/the truth does it mean you have the right to tell them that? And if you do how many times? Just once, a few times a week or month or as many times as you want? Can it ever be seen as bullying in your eyes? Because it sure can in mine.

Stating the fact, as it's seen in your eyes, but making it to belittle people might not be bullying if it happens only once. But to me it's the behavior of a bully. I don't think anyone in this thread have been a bully or bullied people. Yet. But I do think (opinion not fact) that some have shown unnecessary rudeness. But maybe I'm just in need of a thicker skin.

I understand that but here's my thoughts about it. Without looking in dictionaries. So this is a personal opinion, not me stating a fact. As mentioned earlier there's different degrees, as it is with most things in life (You need examples?). What you mentioned I'd call abuse which in my eyes is even worse than bullying. But even if it's bullying as you seem to see it does it mean that just because other behavior isn't as bad it isn't bad at all? Or at least not bad enough to be called bullying? I've tried to define my view on what bullying is earlier in this thread so I hope I don't have to repeat it.

Awesome, awesome post TK. :)
The problem with bullying, subtle. outright, real life or the net(no matter if some think that it exisists or not) is that it sometimes leaves scars and long lasting effects, the younger the person the more problems he or she may have later. Their self esteem and ability to defend themselves can be impaired, simply put lives can be wrecked by the so called macho man/woman who think that it is fair sport to pick on the weaker member of society. I have noticed that if the bully is has had the tables turned they find out truly butch they are (not!). We think of bullying here only on a small scale, but in a broader spectrum of human life events in our rcent history can see what happens when bullying gets out of control, for example ethnic cleansing or the final solution of Nazi Germany last century. That is bullying at its ultimate, the stronger people (and at times the weaker minded) using their power over thhe weaker people. Some may disagree but it bullying nonetheless!

So if it be a one-to-one bullying scenario or grand scale, subtle or outright, it is evil and wrong, we only get one shot at life on this planet and it should be a good shot and not over shadowed or ruined by the blly!!!

I didn't say that the person being called fattie now and again for a few years wasnt bullying, NOWHERE did I say that.
I said compared with what some people have actually went through, complaining and crying and moaning and wallowing in self pity about beaing called fattie is ridiculous.

Never once said it wasn't.

I didn't even go into detail about what that kid went through, I explained some of the more mundane abuses he received.

The idea of this thread was to discuss bullying. Others have stated their views. Stating what they FEEL is bullying, and you have shot them down. You have expressed that their view of bullying or what have you is WRONG?! That is what is bothering me. THAT is what makes you arrogant. This has not been a very open dialogue. its called debating with conviction. I haven't shot anyone down. My main argument was that people cry wolf too often, when lots of times its just a simple case of miscommunication.

So I just spent some time rereading the whole thread, as suggested.

And what I find most interesting is the clear sea change in this thread. It started out with a good discussion going on. Funny how people could disagree with each other, and work out disagreements and misunderstandings just fine.

The clear change is when people started attacking me because someone rudely(with nothing to do with the topic) implied/attacked? that I had some axe to grind, etc.

And I replied because I explicitly stated that I didn't want this topic to be about me. And in MY OPINION, their comment was rude, obnoxious and ignorant. Which it was.
Oh, please don’t let my lack of response to that one lead you to believe that I agreed with you.

I never implied any such thing, I merely asked you if what she said REGARDING ME(obviously implied), had any merit in this topic.

So let’s look at that post. A) Yes, she’s calling you on the fact that when you came back into this thread after starting it, it does look like you’re out to settle some personal score. Both times I’ve read this thread, I came to the exact same conclusion.

That is utter nonsense, I already had a clear intent in mind when starting thid topic, like I do about all topics I start. I just waited until others had their say first. And I wasn't the only one with a very similar opinion. Severasl people were of like mind. The 'incident' you're referring to happened after I made this topic, and if you look at most of my serious tpics, you will see that I almost always say I hve my own thoughts, but I'd prefer to see some other opinions before I post my own.

The bulk of her post was about me. Since when did it become ok here to make disparaging comments about others?

So as you can see, there was a lot of merit in that post, that had very little to do with attacking you.

So why didn't she just post her little bit that you claim is merited within this topic instead of the bulk of her post being about attacking me(as you point out several times).

And now let’s look at your response:

Hmm, how do you know she didn’t read the first thread in the post? She’s commented multiple times in this thread. How come it’s just this post that makes her lazy/ignorant? Also, what part of her post even suggests that she hasn’t read the first post? How would reading the first post change her read on the situation? I wonder why she might not really believe that this is not about you, after reading that and your subsequent posts?
Here we go again, and I'm the rude, belittling bully. Where did I say I was unjustly called a bully?
The condescension is a really nice addition to the name-calling though. Way to try and make her feel stupid. And I’d like to know why her opinion is worth so little that she “shouldn’t have bothered”?

Okay, let’s continue, I then said this:

I stand by that. It is a possible read of your exchange. I also never used the term “bully” here, though subsequently I seem to be accused of calling you such. But let’s see, you called EWR lazy, ignorant, and stupid enough to need the word “communication” defined for her. Oh, and told she shouldn’t have bothered to post in the thread. Hmm, sounds like berating someone to me.

Then you said this:

Then you say, "I'm sorry, but I think you misunderstood what I meant by 'today's standards'. What I was trying to say was..." The first question I have already answered above. .

Alright, so now we move on the “Schillaci is so persecuted” part of the thread.

Come on EB. Seriously? You seriously think he wasn’t making a derogatory comment there?

That’s true, but saying, “And you're coming across as someone who was too lazy/ignorant to read the first post in the topic” (especially when that clearly is false) is different from saying, “I think you might just be ignorant of the fact that I have been bullied myself.”

I’ve already dealt with this part above. He says it’s not about something involving him but it is easy to think differently based on his comments in this thread.

I’ve read the whole thread (twice) and I came to the same conclusion as she did. And I’ve said already that calling someone ignorant and ignorant of the facts are two different things and it was not the latter that we saw here.

Actually, this thread was going along fine until the two of you started making this personal.

So why does everyone else need to get a thicker skin, but Schillaci has every right (in your opinion) to go after EWR the way he did? Shouldn’t he just have gotten a thicker skin?

Hey don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.

Again, depends on how you say it.

I can use the word “asshole” correctly. Doesn’t mean I should.

Wrong. It’s everyone’s problem when a couple of people think they can treat others however they’d like and then hide behind saying they’re just “telling it like it is”.

Don’t twist my words to suit your case. I wasn’t concerned that it would start arguments, but that like in this thread people would get personal about it rather than arguing points of view. There’s a difference, which some people still don’t seem to get.

Yes, it is pathetic, that people are treated as such that they have to get offended at all.

Oh, I'm sorry, maybe you need to toughen up. And after making that statement, are you honestly still going with this facade that this whole thing is not about a personal incident that happened to you? Because funny how you made that same comment to me before, during that personal incident…

I'm not even going over the rest of your post Buffy, because you contradicted yourself about a dozen times. And you came to this topic with a preconcieved notion about what I was trying to do here. Its obvious. A long time has passed, I foolishly believed you were going to give me a fair shake. And I'm pretty sure its not intentional, you just have it in your head about me, and it blinkers how you see what I say.

I was checking out some of the old threads to see if there were any I was to late to comment on, since I am kind of new. People sure seem to argue alot. I came here for one thing, and that was buffy! Why are you all fighting over this? Everybody brings up great points and nobody is going to win because both sides think that they are right. It won't end by going back and forth so why don't you all agree to disagree. I clicked on the post to talk about the title and found that I won't be able to get a word in about my opinions on bullying because of this, and that's a little silly. Again, we are here for BUFFY and JOSS WHEDON not to dispute things like this and get nasty. It's not fair to the rest of us.

I just wanted to put in my two cents. It's fine if you disagree, just don't be disrespectful.

I'm sorry you don't like seeing this. Believe me, the members that actually care about this board don't like it either. It wasn't like this until a few months ago. :(

Yeah,what happened?
I've been out of town with very little access to a computer until now. I just reread everything I missed and WOW. This started out as a supposed general conversation about bullying and turned into personal attacks left and right and THIS is the reason the board is having so many problems recently. I don't understand why all of a sudden people think they have the right to talk to other members/staff any way they want. There is so much disrespect going on here it's rediculous. I think it's obvious that this thread needs to be closed, since some people can't discuss this topic without throwing personal jabs out there for the entire board to see. Look at Emzzie's post ^^. She's a newbie and this kind of thing is not good for her or any other new member to see. Why the hell would they feel any reason to stay here with seeing members fighting like this?

Well, we're over 100 posts. But if anyone would like to actually have a discussion about bullying, please feel free to start another thread.
