for me, a lifelong horror addict, cabin in the woods was the perfect fix. i wouldn't say i found it particularly scary, but that's okay. i was exceedingly entertained. the archetypal characters that weren't really archetypal characters, just drugged into being something more typical, were all a joy, and the fact that the stoner not only survives, but susses out everything that is going on--and further, is inoculated cus he uses really kind bud--well, that just made me smile. loved the folks running the show, loved the weird moment of woman making out with a wolf head, loved the japanese school girls dealing with their monster, loved the monster board, loved the dinging of the elevators, and i really, really loved the ending.
part of what i love about horror movies is their inherent sense of nihilism. now, i think horror simultaneously serves to show us how meaningful life is, but they also destroy life without sentimentality, much like things are if you're an active member of the food chain. so to get to the end, to realize that cabin in the woods, and really all horror stories, are methods of appeasing the lovecraftian gods that dwell beneath us, well, that was cool. and then to realize that we failed, and it was all gonna be destroyed just like that, well, that's bold and risky and awesome.
beautiful flick.
