Cabin in the Woods Discussion (SPOILERS)

Cabin in the Woods is one of my favourite films of the year. Loved the cast and the whole concept of the bets and the people doing them (can't remember the name, it's been a while).

I didn't think it was overly predictable myself, but then I don't watch many films in that genre to compare it to. Going to ask for it for christmas anyway.

I just watched it and found it interesting. Definitely entertaining but like previously stated predictable. Kinda cool concept although I feel like they could have done without paying Sigourney Weavers salary lol

I love this film! Love the way it takes and expands the classic "teens in the woods getting killed off one by one by a monster" idea by creating an interesting fantasy, buffy-like story as to why there is a monster in the woods killing these teens. Mixed with the classic Joss humour eg. the workers just acting like regular office workers going about their job day to day, as if sacrificing kids to mighty gods is so routine. Brilliant! Would certainly recommend it to anyone, especially Buffy fans

I enjoyed it. I was happy Marty (?) survived. I thought he was going to come back when they killed him offscreen. I didnt like the chic who played the virgin though, she was annoying. Loved the bit where Chris Hemsworth tried to jump the motorbike, I loved the humour through out. I didnt expect them to sacrifice the world in the end though, I thought they would kill Marty somehow and save it. I havent watched many horror movies for a few years, but this is one that I did quite like.

I usually never watch horror movies because I am a chicken and get scared very easily. But since this is a Joss movie, I had to watch it... with my blanket ready in case I needed to hide behind it.

First I didn't get scared except of one tiny little moment when they are in the "monsters-cages-elevator-like-thingy" because of the monstrously(sp?) huge SPIDER! :S

Some parts kinda felt like watching Supernatural (like the badass killer unicorn!!) so I really liked that.

Chris Hemsworth was a nice eye candy 🙂 And I liked the typical horror gang with the whore, the athlete, etc.

Also, in the end I almost expected the characters to go "Hey, we should kill those motherf***ers ourselves, you take the ones on the left, I'll take the ones on the right." (talking about the ancient gods here, btw) But I might just miss Angel XD

In general quite a good movie. I was very happy to see Amy and Tom Lenk in it (couldn't help but shout "ANDREW!!" when I saw him 😀 ).

I'll have to watch it again, though, for I missed a lot of dialogue when I was half-hiding behind my blanket and expecting something really disgusting to happen.

Oh and for the message you all seem to be talking about, I didn't really think about it. I prefered to just enjoy seeing everyone be killed by zombies.

Btw, didn't anyone teach these kids to just cut the freaking head off a zombie to kill it???

Yep yep yep! I love Chris Hemsworth and I yelled out every time I saw a Jossverse character. And yeah, I didn't care about messages, I just wanted to be entertained, and I was.

So I finally got around to watching this and boy am I glad I didn't see it at the movies but just rented it! Pretty much from the start of the movie my whole thought process was: What was that?

I mean... really? The 'government' or whatever they were steering the kids, sacrificing them, feeding them chemicals to make them act in stereo-typical horror flick ways... and to what - appease the big bad Gods who were watching? Cause goodness was winning elsewhere in the world... really? It didn't felt original it just felt really... stupid. Normally I enjoy Joss' works and ideas but this was not for me...

The movie as a:
Reality show nightmare = fail
Horror = fail
Supernatural horror = fail (it just came across as incrediby ridiculous and the 'threat' to the earth felt... well ludicrous really)

When Sigourney Weaver popped up I was shocked truth be told - shocked that Joss or whomever got her to sign up for this movie.

I liked Frans Kranz character, he was funny, but not funny enough to save the movie or the "army of monsters" that were just laughable...

Sorry Mr Whedon, this was just a big "boo" from me.

Yeah I finally got around to see it tonight (thought it would be appropriate!)

It was pretty crap

I guess I didn't find it all that original, what with it playing off the Scream idea that all horror films have a formula. I also don't think the story in and of itself it very well done - it's not really a horror film to me I guess.

I definitely agree, the whole horror movies being formulaic has been done allot and is so widely know by audience that it seems really dated to reference it. The opening to that last scream movie did a much better job of making fun of that whole idea.

I also found the story really bad, it wasn't a horror film at all, it was a comedy/message film. The only bit that was suspenseful the way a horror movie should be was they each had an object in the basement and it was building up on which one was gonna be used.

I totally agree the whole idea was stupid, I really don't think these big bad gods were really wanting to see some human breasts, I think the movie was trying to be smarter then it was.

I was convinced it was gonna be a reality show, that It was gonna be the year 3000 and people had given up on written tv and this was the new form of horror movie - I also think that would have been a much better movie (and message actually)

The only bit I really liked was when the elevators started brining up all the monsters, seeing some classic horror movie monsters all together was funny, but I don't think they used that as well as they could have.

I like your idea of the new horror movie, would've been better...

I just watched it last weekend and really, really, really wanted to like it. But...I never liked the initiative storyline in S4 in the first place, so this going to where it was a lot like that, just taken to the next level, didn't do much for me. I don't think it was bad, but it's not one i'll likely watch again. I rented the raven and figured it would be the more blah of the two...

I just finished watching it 5 minutes ago. And sorry, but my reaction was "meh"

I mean, I didn't hate it. I liked Frans Kranz, and it was fun to see Amy and Tom.

But, after all the hype and so many people raving about it, I was looking forward to it so much that I guess I was bound to be disappointed. I kept waiting for something to shock me or scare me, but it never happened.

Still, overall it was entertaining enough I suppose. I was a bit distracted so maybe I need to watch it again.

Wow, I am shocked by the posts in this thread....

Where "The Avengers" bored me to death, and I didn't see any Joss Whedon, this was 100% Joss Whedon. I loved every minute of it. I loved the humor, loved the story, love the twists.

I loved Kristen Connolly and absolutely loved Fran Kranz. And I loved the ending. Wow!

I loved it. :love22:

I rented this film recently and loved it, and I have to say I agree with everything you said (well, I can't comment on The Avengers as I haven't seen it). I loved how he went from typical horror to a sudden joke or turning it on its head. I think one particular moment I remember which was very Whedon-y was when the creepy gas station guy was saying all the menacing stuff on the phone and then suddenly breaks character and asks 'Am I on speakerphone?'.

for me, a lifelong horror addict, cabin in the woods was the perfect fix. i wouldn't say i found it particularly scary, but that's okay. i was exceedingly entertained. the archetypal characters that weren't really archetypal characters, just drugged into being something more typical, were all a joy, and the fact that the stoner not only survives, but susses out everything that is going on--and further, is inoculated cus he uses really kind bud--well, that just made me smile. loved the folks running the show, loved the weird moment of woman making out with a wolf head, loved the japanese school girls dealing with their monster, loved the monster board, loved the dinging of the elevators, and i really, really loved the ending.

part of what i love about horror movies is their inherent sense of nihilism. now, i think horror simultaneously serves to show us how meaningful life is, but they also destroy life without sentimentality, much like things are if you're an active member of the food chain. so to get to the end, to realize that cabin in the woods, and really all horror stories, are methods of appeasing the lovecraftian gods that dwell beneath us, well, that was cool. and then to realize that we failed, and it was all gonna be destroyed just like that, well, that's bold and risky and awesome.

beautiful flick.

Beautifully said!! :-D
I just got around to watching this, and I have to say, not only is Joss Whedon pure evil personified, he finally got to do justice to the scene in Season 4 when all of the demons were released from their cages and the rise of the First Evil, which never happened in Season 7 (I could just imagine, though, if they had failed, Spike and Faith sharing one last cigarette as they watch, helplessly, as the F E is released.

I'm not particularly a fan of the slasher horror movies, but this one was really, finally, did the genre justice.

Just coincidentally, I had just watched the remake of "Red Dawn," and Chris Hemsworth (Curt) played Sam, Patrick Swayze's role in the original, and, of course, Thor in the Marvel movies.

Rewatched this a couple of weeks ago and although I'm still not a fan of the slasher elements I get why they're in and I appriciated the movie more this time around. It'll never be on my favourite movie list. I don't think any horror movie will. Just not my style. I'm interested in all the references and stuff though. Not that I get them all. Far from it.
