I was looking at Caleb's name. Right his name is

CALEB

Ok, so the start is CA (as in Cain) then read from right to left is BEL (which could mean Abel) Get it Cain and Abel, maybe he has something to do with this, or do you just thinks its a coincidence?

It was hinted that he may be played by James Marsters, in that case, maybe he's Spike's brother?

Meaning of the name Caleb...

Since the question came up here, please bear with me as I repeat information from a related post...

And here's the origin of the name "Caleb";
CALEB m Biblical
Pronounced: KAY-leb
Means "dog" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament this was the name of one of the twelve spies sent by Moses into Israel. Of the Israelites who left Egypt with Moses, Caleb and Joshua were the only ones who lived to see the promised land.

1) Caleb won't be played by James Marsters.

2) It's doubtful the writers put any more thought into the name of the character, besides the idea that is sounded "cool and religion" (The second I see, but the first I don't know). After all, they didn't put much thought into the character himself, so why bother with the name?

Sorry for the negative tone, but from the ep 18 spoilers, I just think the character of Caleb is silly beyond belief. And unfortunately the whole of the ep 18 spoilers really had nothing that could be talked about in a positive light. On the plus side, "Lies My Parents Told Me" looks to be great.

They always put thought into a character, escpecially important characters!

What I know about 18 so far, is that it's going to be great, and Caleb looks kinda cool to me!

Anybody here seen Hellsing? Doesn't Caleb sound familiar?
Alexander Anderson, Vatican Vampire Hunter and Priest, big bad guy!!!

You hear about the latest Marti Noxton (sp?) interview? Apparently, they didn't put all that much thought into Spike's arc this season, and she admitted as much. That he stayed in the basement for far to long. So it's not true that they always put thought into their characters. Even when it's a character as great or as popular as Spike, who's been around for 5 years now and is the most important character on the show save for Buffy herself. If they didn't give much thought to Spike's arc, why's it so hard to believe that they gave much thought to a throwaway villain who'll be in, at best, 5 episodes total?

As for Caleb, I obviously disagree. Caleb, IMO, is nothing but one huge ball of stereotypes. A caricature. The equivalent of a drug-dealing, gang-banging, watermellon eating black character, or a money-grubbing Jewish banker character. Nothing but a bunch of ridiculous stereotypes rolled up into one ball of crud.

What I know about 18 so far, is that it's going to be great, and Caleb looks kinda cool to me!

Also disagree with your estimation of episode 18, and not just because of Caleb. I also strongly disliked the Spike/Faith scene. With Spike flirting with her, it made it seem as if Spike was more interested in banging a Slayer, any Slayer, than being with Buffy. Can't nail that Slayer, anymore? Well, here's another one ready and willing. I'm not the sappy type who watches the show for the relationships, but that scene cheapened his love for her.

Though on the plus side, I heard that Joss gave it a serious rewrite. Seems Drew Goddard was short on time when he wrote it, having only 3 days to do the job. Hopefully Joss'll give it some serious rewrites, because the summaries I've read of it make it sound like crap (With the exception of the scene where Andrew describes Faith attacking a Vulcan!).

So it's not true that they always put thought into their characters.

The concept of the character Spike was allready made up, Caleb is totally new, they have to put some though into him, especially if he has a storyline!

I also strongly disliked the Spike/Faith scene. With Spike flirting with her

Bonding, not flirting ... they're very much alike and therefore they might get along well!

You certainly don't think to much of Joss & co, do you?

No it wasn't, at least you did some effort! To figure out where they came up with this strange name!

i dont think it was a stupid thought...is'nt that what we spend most of our time doing?? tring to work out they whys and hows of Joss's mind 😀

So it's ok when you don't put any thought into what you want to do with a character, so long as he's a pre-existing character?

And I put it up as proof to dispute that "they always put thought into a character, escpecially important characters". Spike's second in importance only to Buffy, and Marti Noxon (Or is it Noxton? I just can't remember how it's spelled. Oh, nevermind) outright admitted that they didn't put much thought into his character development. His character who's, by the way, a LOT more important than a villain who'll be dead in 5 eps. Why's it so hard to believe that they might not have put much thought into Caleb? Because he's new? If they had put much thought into him, then he wouldn't be the walking collection of stereotypes that he is. Mutant Enemy's done a great job of creating short term villains, before (I.E. Mr. Trick, Kakistos, etc), but Caleb isn't one of them.

Bonding, not flirting ... they're very much alike and therefore they might get along well!

Well, hopefully Joss'll rewrite that scene, cause it very much comes off as flirting. And it very much cheapens Spike, making it seem as if he's only interested in banging a Slayer, any Slayer. Nevermind his spilling about private stuff between him and Buffy. Doesn't reflect well on Faith, either (Another of my favorite characters). Still going for the boyfriend?

You certainly don't think to much of Joss & co, do you?

I'm supposed to be enthused when I hear stuff like how they left Spike in the basement because they didn't know what to do with him, or be excited about a script that was written in a rush in 3 days? Sorry. I'm a fan and I love the show, but that doesn't mean that I check my brain at the door and smile when I'm served up a steaming pile of crap, which is what the appropriately named "Dirty Girls" sure smells like.

Ok then, so it was just a stupid thought!

Nah. Somebody else around here, though, already analyzed the name. It's from the Book of Joshua in the Bible. If I remember right, Caleb and Joshua were the only Israelies who set out from Egypt to make it to the Promised Land. Caleb had, before that, served as a spy, reconnoitering ahead. I thought the "spy" angle was interested, but considering that the Buffy Caleb blew up the Watchers Council, murdered 2 Potentials, and gouged out Xander's eye, I don't think he's a plant for the side of Good. Even the most deep cover spy would've found a way to avoid doing something like that.

The name Caleb also means "dog". I guess Caleb CAN be described as The First Evil's hunting dog. Sniffing out its enemies and destroying them.

His character was allready made up, they put thought in it in season 2, and let him evolve throughout the season, they put thought in that as well, if he stays the same this season, then they can't really put though it it!

And even if he was flirting, it's not like he and Buffy are going steady, he can still have a casual flirt, there's nothing wrong with that!

I don't leave my brain at the door either, but I however have seen so many marvelous episodes, that I entrust Joss & co to make something good! And from what I've heard of "Dirty Girls", I'm going to like it!

Okay...not to make even more sh*t hit the fan, but...

Spike not equal to the second most important...

I think Willow or Faith would be more important...he's what a vampire w/ a soul??? yeah...that's been done!

I think the Caleb character at this point doesn't seem to have much depth either...he's a fallen preacher, who now kills those on the side of good...lots of villains start out that way! Really good then all of a sudden bad! look at the movies!

He just seems all of a sudden and rushed....they could have thought about HOW and WHY he targeted Buffy...but i haven't seen the episode yet so there is still a chance!

I don't know where she read it, but it was on spoilerslayer, Caleb will be played be Nathan Fillion (Capt Reynolds from Firefly)!
