The concept of the character Spike was allready made up, Caleb is totally new, they have to put some though into him, especially if he has a storyline!
So it's ok when you don't put any thought into what you want to do with a character, so long as he's a pre-existing character?
And I put it up as proof to dispute that "they always put thought into a character, escpecially important characters". Spike's second in importance only to Buffy, and Marti Noxon (Or is it Noxton? I just can't remember how it's spelled. Oh, nevermind)
outright admitted that they didn't put much thought into his character development. His character who's, by the way, a LOT more important than a villain who'll be dead in 5 eps. Why's it so hard to believe that they might not have put much thought into Caleb? Because he's new? If they had put much thought into him, then he wouldn't be the walking collection of stereotypes that he is. Mutant Enemy's done a great job of creating short term villains, before (I.E. Mr. Trick, Kakistos, etc), but Caleb isn't one of them.
Bonding, not flirting ... they're very much alike and therefore they might get along well!
Well, hopefully Joss'll rewrite that scene, cause it very much comes off as flirting. And it very much cheapens Spike, making it seem as if he's only interested in banging a Slayer, any Slayer. Nevermind his spilling about private stuff between him and Buffy. Doesn't reflect well on Faith, either (Another of my favorite characters). Still going for the boyfriend?

I'm supposed to be enthused when I hear stuff like how they left Spike in the basement because they didn't know what to do with him, or be excited about a script that was written in a rush in 3 days? Sorry. I'm a fan and I love the show, but that doesn't mean that I check my brain at the door and smile when I'm served up a steaming pile of crap, which is what the appropriately named "Dirty Girls" sure smells like.

Nah. Somebody else around here, though, already analyzed the name. It's from the Book of Joshua in the Bible. If I remember right, Caleb and Joshua were the only Israelies who set out from Egypt to make it to the Promised Land. Caleb had, before that, served as a spy, reconnoitering ahead. I thought the "spy" angle was interested, but considering that the Buffy Caleb blew up the Watchers Council, murdered 2 Potentials, and gouged out Xander's eye, I don't think he's a plant for the side of Good. Even the most deep cover spy would've found a way to avoid doing something like that.
The name Caleb also means "dog". I guess Caleb CAN be described as The First Evil's hunting dog. Sniffing out its enemies and destroying them.
