Probably because Angel was the only love interest she actively pursued. Parker targeted her, Riley courted her, Spike stalked her and wore her down, she didn't really have to 'do' anything, romantically speaking, except...be receptive, I guess. And even then she was never 'receptive enough' for them.
Basically destiny gave her Angel and then Buffy just sat around and waited for destiny to give her a 'same as or better' offer but it never happened.
I love the way Riley and Buffy built towards their relationship, I don't think she'd experienced something like that before.
I agree and I do think it’s why they romanticize their own past. They see their relationship through rose colored goggles and truly believe things like if it weren’t for the curse we would have had the perfect relationship, then after that there’s other obstacles.
Maybe. But I think both of them are aware than even if his soul remained intact, there are, as you mentioned, other obstacles to consider. If they did remain together long-term, they'd have to have a real discussion on what would happen. Buffy would eventually age and pass away.
I think the thing that often gets lost is that Buffy was 16 and definitely not done growing.
Absolutely! However, Buffy's unique in the sense that she'd had to mature faster than your regular teen. She faces death on a daily basis and likely views life and romantic relationships differently.
As corny as the 'cookie dough' speech was, she was right. She wasn't done baking. When she had that talk with Angel I'm not sure she'd shared with him that they were going to activate all potential slayers, which means that Buffy might be able to live a somewhat 'normal' life, so it was probably in the back of her mind when they had their exchange.
I do think she eventually would have eventually grown away from him
If anything, it would've been the issue of her being a slayer and him being a vampire. Not that they didn't have things in common or didn't love one another.
I mean, having serious discussions about the future is probably difficult for them to have, considering the danger they're constantly in.
but people especially young people fight harder when they believe it’s them against the whole world.
It can be like that, but then there's 'high school sweethearts' who remain together. Sometimes it works.
I also think that Angel was just at the start of his journey as well and while being with Buffy helped him take the first steps he came into his own away from her in L.A.
I agree. And funnily enough, Spike was able to show some growth
away from Buffy as well.
Wherever Buffy is right now, I hope she's happy. If she chooses to be single, good for her. Or whether she's found love with a nice, normal guy (or gal!). As we saw, relationships with vampires were kinda doomed.
Joan the Vampire Slayer I'd had a lot of Bangel shippers make that argument,
I'm sure there's a number of Bangel fans who make that point.
that since he's her first love, she will compare everyone to him, no one will come close, etc.
Like I said - first love doesn't equal 'soulmate'. But I don't think it's more about Angel being her
first love, but more about that she was the most comfortable with him. She felt safest with him, he understood her like no one else could. They share a deep love and connection.
It's why they still weaved in and out of one another's lives. It's why Buffy, even after everything she'd been through tells him in s7 that she sometimes thinks ahead of a life with him.
