As adorable as I find the idea of Angel and Spike having such a heated argument over something so trivial, who would win?

My money is on the cavemen. They had to kill to survive so they'd more likely have the fighting instinct.

No, the astronauts should not be allowed guns.

Ummm, actually cavemen came a long time after the dionsaurs...
but i still agree - cavemen would win because they are sort of feral and used to fighting to survive, astronauts are really just scientists and are sort of nerdy - i know they'd be smarter but not really all that useful in a fight.

Also, i've read some discussion on the fact that Spike and Angel represent the caveman and the astronaut though there is some debate on which is which, either:

1. Spike is the astronaut because he is modern and adaptable, Angel is the caveman because he is sort of old-fashioned and static - in which case they are arguing the case for each other (ie: spike says caveman, angel says astronaut) which is kind of nice.

or

2. Spike is the caveman because of the whole fists and fangs thing and his loving the fight, while Angel is the astronaut because of his tendancy to think things through and the whole killing is art thing - in which case they are arguing for themselves.

alright, sue me, Im not great at cavemen history 101. lol, though I also think cuz astronauts are smaller and i think theyre smarts would actually get them into trouble.

I would have to agree on the "fighting for themselves" argument. Spike is definately more instinctual (is that even a word?) and more likely to hit first, think later.

That's why the cavemen would win...the astronauts would be too busy trying to work out strategy...the cavemen would just be gung-ho about it.

didn't Fred prove that cavemenr win in that ep? she said 'I guess cavemen win' or something.
and i agree. the cavemen lived through a lot, and evolved into us. they had to use their instincts. Astronauts us gadgets and gizmos and are told what to do.
cavemen all the way!

yes!! nicely put Lyri!!
I have no idea which would win, but as soon as i find an Astronauts and Cavemen. Then I'll let you all know who wins lol. I have no idea:lmao:

cavemen hands down. without guns i dont think astronauts would stand a chance.....but there is the knowledge with martial arts...and actually knowing how to fight that you should take into consideration

There can be no definite answer because there are too many variables.

1)The caveman is injured/half starved. The astronaut is in prime physical condition and was trained as a Navy SEAL. Who wins?

2)The caveman is the alpha male of his tribe, a fearless warrior who kills without hesitation. The astronaut is an electronics engineer who never had a single fight in his life. Who wins?

3)The caveman is a teenager who confronts the astronaut on his first solo hunt. The astronaut had time to plan carefully and sets a clever trap for the caveman. Who wins?

4)The caveman is a skilled hunter in search of food for his family and has no qualms about cannibalism. The astronaut is completely absorbed in taking plant and water samples for analysis and has no idea that he is about to run into someone who sees him, not only as an enemy, but also as dinner. Who wins?

There are just too many variables for there to be a definite answer.

LOL! Excellent point though :)
Astronauts. For one thing, their space suits would probably scare the Cavemen witless, and they may end up running away right off the bat. And even if they stick around, a lot of Astronauts are ex-military (Neil Armstrong, for instance, was in the Navy and served in the Korean War), so they're trained in hand-to-hand. Cavemen may be stronger, but that's the only advantage they'd have. So a hand-to-hand fight isn't a foregone conclusion in favor of the Cavemen. Nevermind the fact that Astronauts aren't the scrawny wimps some of you folks think they are. The guys that work at mission control are brainy wimps, sure, but Astronauts are typically in prime physical condition, so the Astronauts in this fight would all be in great shape.

On top of which, the Astronauts are MUCH smarter. While the Cavemen are trying to chase them around and beat them with their clubs, the Astronauts, if they decide to forego a physical confrontation, will be doing all sorts of sneaky stuff like setting traps and building a gun from scratch, like how Captain Kird did in the episode "Arena". 😀 If worst comes to worst, the Astronauts can simply rub two sticks together to start a fire (something which the Cavemen probably haven't figured out, yet), and then beat the Cavemen over the head with lit torches.

Astronauts don't carry guns. So an astronaut would have no advanced weaponry to use against a caveman. Moreover, since cavemen aren't found in space, the fighting would have to take place down on Earth, where (assuming the astronaut wore his spacesuit) he would be weighed down like a ton of bricks and therefore barely able to move. Of course, if the fight was taking place in space, then yes, the astronaut would win, but that would be entirely owing to the total lack of gravity and oxygen up there and so wouldn't really be much of a victory.

Astronauts.

Thinking that the Cavemen would win is just another one of those examples how we tend to romanticize the past. If the cavemen are allowed their tools then so should the astronauts and even if their not I would still say astronauts.

The intelligence of modern day scientists against a primitive version of what would become a human being is not exactly a fair fight. Brute force means nothing if you can't put it to good use and there's a big difference between chasing a mammoth over a cliff and kicking some astronauts butts.

We now know the astronauts could, then the question becomes would they? They've got a whole nother set of morales and ethics compared to the primitive man. Would they let themselves kick the Neanderthals' butt?

Actually, the issue of whether asrtonauts should carry guns was discussed before the first moon mission, and it was decided that since the need for them was infinitesmal at best, there would be little reason to bother with them. By that logic, sending astronauts on a mission to as inhospitable an environment as primeval earth would warrant the inclusion of weapons, since the need for them would most definitely exist.

I would bet on the astronaut over a caveman as in a homo sapien of the Paleolithic era because astronauts tend to be ex-military in peak mental and physical condition, may well have hand-to-hand combat training, and are probably bigger and stronger than the average caveman because of at least 10,000+ years more of evolution, a better diet and better health care.

Now some people also refer to Neanderthals as cavemen, and against one of those I think the astronaut would lose because Neanderthals were supposedly much stronger and more robustly built than homo sapiens of their time.

Just like to point out that cavemen were modern homo sapiens, not proto-humans. Their brains would be the same size as an astronauts. So it's really not as unequal a contest as you're making out, JollyApe.

Smarts doesn't matter! It really all comes down to survival instinct, and in that way Cavemen lived day to day fighting to survive, Astronauts didn't have that. Cavemen would have been able to do whatever it was possible to survive the astronauts, and they don't even have a conscious...Astronauts would have let emotions get in the way, to Cavemen, it's kill or be killed.

I think in most fights (non-professional especially) the bigger guy wins, and astronauts would probably be bigger than cavemen since humans have evolved in size over the years. And to boot I'm pretty sure that astronauts tend to be bigger, stronger and more alpha in general than average people of our time. Smarts may help too, but perhaps not that much unless the fighters are given some time to prepare, strategize, build improvised weapons or something else like that.

And the cavemen's survival instinct would probably just tell them to run if confronted with a strange and slightly bigger or equally sized opponent.
