What do you think of the names of the characters in the Whedonverse?

I have always liked that in general, the writers picked pretty unique names for the characters. That being said, I don't think I would ever name my child Buffy, Willow, or Cordelia. LOL

Discussing names for the baby the other night, I mentioned that I would love to name the baby (if it's a boy) Alexander Riley. My husband laughed and said "I don't want to name our kid after your Buffy boyfriends." LOL

So what do you think? Do you like the names or think they're weird? Would you ever name a child after any of the characters?

that's so funny
Buffy is too weird of a name and too obvious that it's named after a show. Willow wouldn't be bad, though.

Honestly, I have always thought that her name being Buffy was detrimental to the show in the end. A lot of people probably don't give it a chance just based on that (at least the ones I've talked to 🙁 ) Other than that the other names seem pretty normal to me....would I name my child after a Buffy character? Probably not, but only because I'd want to go for something more original.

HisMrs Alexander Riley is a great strong name though! 😀 Cracks me up your husband calls them your "buffy boyfriends"!

LOL He knows I'm beyond help. ;)
I worked with a lady named buffy, and she was older than the show so she was named buffy first 🙂

Joss definitely likes going for the odder names. I think the most normal name he's ever conjured up is Topher, which says pretty much all you need to know right there.

Would I name a kid after someone from the Whedonverse? I don't know. I named my golden retriever "Krypto" after the dog in Smallville, and after being informed by a friend that my car had to have a name, I named it Cordy 🙂.

I like the name Cordelia for a girl. I don't think I'd have any problem naming a child that. I have thought about stuff like this before though. If and when I do have children, I'd want their names to mean something to me. If I had a son I could see naming him Hal or Richard (comic books).

I like Alexander Riley! And the line about the "Buffy boyfriends" was hilarious.

There are a few normal names like Darla (which I like alot), Jenny, Kenra, etc.
But if there were any of the unique names I like it would be Cordelia.

Jenny, Alexander, Riley, Caleb, Olivia, Rupert, William... Although for the really main characters, for their preferred names (like Alexander being Xander, which is unusual), Willow isn't that far out. Also, Simon.

I quite like the names Joss comes up with. Like in Veronica Mars, I absolutely hated the name 'Duncan' (for no particular reason. Just don't like it...), so I disliked the character (probably would have disliked him anyway, though).

I love the name Xander and would definitely name my child after it. A good name is a good name regardless of its origin and I think it's hard to come by something you like enough to give it to someone for the rest of their lives so everyone needs a little inspiration. I also think some of the names are more easily transferable to real life without bring obvious such as Alexander, Willow and Faith whereas such names as Buffy and Cordelia are a little more obvious.

Saying that though, when my little sister was born I begged my mom to call her Buffy or Faith. I was only 12 at the time though and I thought it was awesome 🙂

I absolutely love the various assortment of names in both Buffy and Angel. Some of them are really kinda unique (I have yet to meet someone named Buffy, Cordelia, or Harmony.), and they mix perfectly with the ones that are a little more common (Alexander, Riley, Tara, etc.).

I would like to think that I would have no problem what-so-ever with naming one of my children after a Buffy character. If anything, it would add to their experience if they wanted to watch the show 😉

I loved the names Joss gave to his characters in all his shows. They all fit very well. 🙂 Willow will always be a Willow, haha. 😉

Buffy is an odd name, but Joss himself says the the title of the movie/show tells you exactly what it is. Buffy is a funny name, so it's comedy, vampire is a word with horror connotations and slayer is n action word. Comedy, horror and action pretty much sums up what you're going to get. Also I read somewhere, years ago, that back in the day Buffy was a contraction of Elizabeth. Not a common one, mind you.

Cordelia, well it fits the character. It's not a great name, in my opinion.

Willow is a great name for a boy or a girl and in the unlikely event that I ever have children that will be one of the names on the table.

As for the rest of the names, they are unique but not so unusual that it's jarring, which gives the characters a point of interest from the very beginning.

And then there Aphrodisia and Aura 🙂

I was once told that the Queen Mother was sometimes referred to as Buffy back in the day
Most of the names in Buffy I wouldn't choose for a child (for a pet, maybe) but I really like Faith. I think it has a strong connotation, like "to have faith in something".

And as weird as it sounds, I think Illyria is a beautiful name. Though I would be able to restrain myself from seeing a child named that way with blue hair XD

I don't know that I'd give any of the character names to my kids (maybe Simon or Kaylee (I actually have a friend who just had a baby and they named her Kaylee because of Firefly, and she is adorrrrrable!) because those are pretty normal-sounding names that are still somewhat unique).

All I know is this: if I ever live in a place where I can have a cat, I will be getting one, and his name will be Rupert.

My husband will have no say in this.

And when he's a bad kitty, his name will be Ripper. 😛

If I ever had a child, I wouldn't mind naming my daughter Faith. Son wise, Alexander would be a great choice. Both names have strong, positive associations, like they will no doubt go on to do something brilliant and extraordinary with their lives. Well, with me as their father, they would have no other choice. 😉

I pushed for the name Xander (not Alexander, just Xander) for my first born, but the husband wouldn't go for it. 😛 I know people/kids named Faith, Willow, Zoe, Kaylee, Jenny, Kendra...

Buffy, Oz, and some of the others are just a bit too far out there for me. Plus, I know a few dogs with those names.

Well, Buffy tends to be one of my least favorite characters at times. I'm not saying I dislike Buffy, but I just enjoy the others more. However, I think I love her name so much. I tried pitching Buffy for a name for one of my girls.. she said she couldn't ever say the kids name and not think of Buffy.. I said exactly.

Anywho, I love that the names so different. They aren't so far out there, but they are nice and rare =p

Doyle being my favorite
Willow being my second

I actually know someone who named their child Alexander after Xander Harris. Her child Alexander also just goes by Xander.

And to comment, I would definitley CONSIDER naming a child after a Buffy child, but I probably wouldn't do it. But I really like a lot of Joss's names.

Also, I would like to name the next dog I have Oz.

Does anyone else like the name Anya? I think it's a sweet name for a girl. I actually used to work with a girl called Ania (she was from a Polish family) and it always made me think of 'our' Anya.

Definitely not a fan of any of the other names either. Winnifred always makes me think of The Shining and Wendy as opposed to 'our' Fred so I could never do that to a child!

I'm not a fan of hippy/made up sounding names like Harmony, Faith, Dawn or Willow so they're all crossed off the list.

The others that I can think of - Wesley, Rupert, Cordelia are all names that bring up connotations of nerds so wouldn't do that to a child either.

Oh, and I quite like the name Riley... but for a girl. No offense to 'our' Riley intended, I like the guy, I just prefer the name for a girl.

I also like Riley for a girl. However, I think its be least favorite name on the show. I guess I prefer the unique names. I'm no big on Gunn either. But that goes with names like Hunter or Archer, etc.. I never cared for Faith or Harmony either.
