Characters / Big Bads You Feel Were Wasted

Illyria was wasted for me. Hollands manners, Glory and Hamilton were by far the best villains for me.

I've been studying mythology off and on for some time and the one thing pretty much all mythological gods or demi-gods, evil or not, have in common is that none (exception to the rule might be Apollo) of them feel particularly untouchable. At least not against worthy foes. Either way, to each his own.

Yeah but that's the fun about basing a character on something mythological there are no actual rules to follow, because their not REAL!😀 So these characters are there to be reinvented. And in the case of Glory it made for an more interesting character.
 
the mythology of the Buffyverse is completely different than Western mythology anyway. As far as the topic is concerned, the way Glory's story was conceived by the writers she had nothing to fear really within her hell dimension, so she could indulge to infinite excess in whatever she pleased. And I prefer to draw from real world examples anyway, and a precedent for her certainly exists in many historical cases, insofar as she illustrates the pattern I went into above and won't repeat.

but I won't deny there is room to see differently about it.

I was gonna use a real world example in Qin Shi Huang but it seemed ridiculous with real world/Buffy mythology, to me.
Also its no different than Buffy having its own take on Vampires than other shows or films, there are basic rules which it may have to follow, but besides those it is free to do what it wants. The only thing it needs to be careful of is not to break its own rules.

Its hard to tell with Rayne because he was more that slippery twisted creep a bit like the Mayor but lacking in the class and smarts department so maybe having him pop here and there worked more to his strengths as it might have been a bit of a stretch to keep him believable as a threat to Buffy and gang long term. And because of his link to Giles' past then I guess that's another reason why he was used in such a way, but who knows maybe as part of a partnership it could have worked.
 
Gonna have to go with Oz. Great character, but I wanted to see way more of him than we got. He left just as he was starting to get focus.
The First Evil. And everyone knows why.

I've always thought that if Adam had been more of a proper Frankenstein monster... by which I mean not entirely unsympathetic or emotionless (take elements of the robot girl in I Was Made to Love You perhaps). I actually think he could have been far more compelling.

Essentially, yes.
Season 4 looked at how bad things could be when the world of government/science and demons/magic mix and Adam was basically the embodiment of that... playing God and creating a life designed to kill. If the human parts that made up Adam were just a bit more dominant, I think they could've had a very interesting big bad there.
 
I completely agree about Sunday the vampire. It would have been great to give her a back story, especially if she was a slayer turned vampire.

Not for me. Didn't like the character and didn't think the actress brought that much to it.
 
I've always thought, and often commented, that Wood was totally wasted as one of the good guys in Season 7. He should have been an advance man for Caleb, and maybe even his second in command. There wouldn't even have had to be all that much changed in the character as he was shown. Just add the fact that he knew in advance that Spike had been the one who killed his mother, and he had made a deal with the First Evil to help it with its plans in order to get to dust Spike when his usefulness was at an end. It was obvious from the very first scene that he appeared in that Wood was more than he pretended to be, and that he had some sort of hidden agenda in just being there.

Not sure I think they used him pretty well. I liked the stuff with Spike. Just don't know if the actor was that great or than there was much of a shelf-life outside of a supporting role.
 
Drusilla was wasted as a baddie - I'd have loved to see her go completely mental on the Scoobies, especially after Spike is chipped and effectively switches sides. She just disappears and never returns. As one of the Whirlwind, she should have been a bigger foe. I would have loved to see her & Buffy's showdown.

I thought the idea of Kendra was wasted too. She's called after Buffy's first 'death' but she lasts for only three episodes before being killed (by aforementioned Dru, coincidentally!) but she was a Slayer, she should have lasted longer. It would have been interesting to get to know her a bit more, but I appreciate without her death we would never have seen Faith, and Faith was infinitely more interesting than Kendra (and that Jamaican accent was awful!)

Post Hell's Bells, they didn't seem to know what to do with Anya, which seemed like a wasted opportunity. They tried to make her a vengeance demon again, which didn't work and she seemed to be a bit of a spare part. Plus, she was under-served by her death in Chosen.

Mr. Trick was an interesting character who never seemed to reach his full potential

The Knights of Byzantium - a massive military army that doesn't actually do all that much

The Turok-Han - a massive vampire army that doesn't actually do all that much
 
Doyle! He could've had such a rich backstory. Also the potentials should've been just a few awesome characters like Amanda. Basically every character in season 7. And I always thought vampire Willow should've come back again. Other ones that have been mentioned Oz, Tara (she never had a story all to her own and they should've explored possible issues from the abuse she suffered), Kendra, Ethan, etc.
