Is it just me but I feel like she was holding back and only gave some brief opinions on the characters, aside from Xander. Is she scared of being called ‘ungrateful’ for criticism on the character writing?

But what do you think?

not sure what 's' stands for but it's clearly above 'A', so yes, I pretty much understand all her assessments... and agree with most.

I think I'd rank angel as 'S' rather than plus b/c he plays so little role in the second half of the series though i see where her assessment comes from. I personally think only Buffy deserves S+ but otherwise, i think she's pretty spot on. I'd personally rank Xander as S with the other core members b/c he was significant, even when his contribution was negative. Problematic is something most of us deal with in high school. Even in some of our friends.

S = Superb or Superior, though S+ is a new one to me.

Agreed! Though in high school I was too exhausted to deal with boys like Xander I just wanted my after school donut.

I think she kind of wanted to say that Buffy & Angel were head and shoulders above the other characters. Which I mostly agree with, they did get series named after them. But, to also say that Giles, Willow and Spike were also compelling characters. Which I get, but I really don't like using S+ nonsense. Like, Lore Sjoberg only had one F and about 20 A+. You have to protect your extremes.

Joyce was the mother others didn't have? I laughed (though perhaps I should cry), and yet I have to admit that as flawed as she is she is still better and more caring than my own mother was to me. I suppose that's why I don't judge Joyce as harshly as some others do (though I don't deny her flaws). That aside, I thought Kristine Sutherland played Joyce very well which made the story more immersive, so there's also that.

And Giles as father figure: Interesting enough, I have dreamed Giles was my dad, at least once when even my actual dad was in my dream as well, but Giles was my true father. It's not always like that. Not too long ago (a month or so back) I dreamed he was a neighbor who couldn't even spare a minute for me.
