When I click for Windows help my computer crashes, but that isnèt what I need help on. 🙂

Ièm thinking, on my real question there is probably somewhere here at BB who is bound to know the answer.

I just got back online with a new computer. When I try to type into a message board now, I canèt use apostrophes, question marks, or brackets. I get è, or É, or ^^. Why is that É

I tried to change the font in the browser, but that didnèt work. Itès OK if I type into word, so Ièm not sure if itès the Windows font. Where do I go to change that anyway É. I have XP.

Can anyone help me É

Ok, this may help. Go click View and then go under encoding. Under that go to More and there are a list of fonts.

Mine is under Western European (ISO)

OK. So I went to my Internet Explorer Browser, and tried that. It didnèt work. 🙁

Any other ideas à‰ Could it be something in a basic Windows folder like My Documents à‰ I canèt find anything there. Would it be something else entirely à‰

You could try looking at your keyboard setup - depending on your Windoze version - it may be set to French (Canada) possibly. Try looking in Start> Settings> Control Panel> Regional and Language options, or even Control Panel> Keyboard

Thanks. Checked that out. Seems all right. Also changed the font there. Didnèt help.

You know what Ièm starting to think - virus.

Scanned with Norton, but they could have control of that. Tried online scans, but was blocked, or something. Ièm in constant connection to something but donèt know what. I can find out, I guess. Ièll try that later.

Ièm going to try installing another anti-virus that hopefully canèt be controlled, and a different firewall, so I can see what processes are trying to access the internet.

Oh yeah. Iève been exiting and restarting like crazy.

Hey, has anyone ever tried uninstalling Norton. God itès like you have to take a course just to get rid of that crap-ap.

I want to get rid of it to replace it, but it wonèt go. It wonèt turn off for one thing. You canèt even kill the process with the task manager.I think Ièll try setting it not to start at startup then reboot.

I hate Norton. It thinks it owns your system, and conflicts with everything that doesnèt see it their way.

oh...this happened to me...but everything was with a and accent marks instead of e's...it was because the computer was set up so that the question mark stood for a symbol in the computer or a comma stood for another symbol ect. just like you can set up alt + a certain number to make a symbol...unfortunately i wasn't the one to fix it and i have no idea how to...but if you know how to set up the alt thing foro symbols it may be in there too...

I've never had a problem with Norton...McAfee was the one that took over my computer...I had to take it somewhere just to get rid of it...

Yep, I have a computer with Norton, which I love and one with McAfee, which I hate! When the free trial period runs out I'm going to install Norton on it.
I'd rather use Norton over McAfee anyday.

I've installed and uninstalled Norton no end of times, and had no problems. You do have to manually remove a few folders that remain, usually the Symantec folder used for the Liveupdate, other wise when you come to reinstall it, it tells you that you already have an instance running and installed. Plus, after uninstalling, I always run Reg Mechanic as well. That way, I have no problems with a fresh install of it.

As for your other problem, I'm afraid I have no idea what could be causing that, I do remember having something similar happen to me once, ages ago, but I had somehow caught the CTRL key and something else, that then enabled all the accent keys you seem to be getting instead of ' s.

I'm sorry but I can't remember what I did to stop it doing it.

A quick thought - was there a point when it worked correctly? If so you could try to use an XP Restore Point from then to get you back on track - after backing up stuff you want to keep from after the Restore Point

Can't help with the keyboard issue but regarding the anti-virus i can tell you that with past computers i han nothing but problems with both Norton and McAfee. I'd never use either of them again.

The one i'd recommend would be AVG Anti-Virus. I've been using it for over a year and so far it hasn't let me down at all and barely intrudes on the other programs on my computer. Much better!

Yea AVG is good and is free to home users - bonus :)
Oh yeah, the control and alt button = strange fonts thing. I forgot about that. Thanks Billie Hunter and EDB. Ièm going to investigate that.

I have also had issue previously when a particular keyboard key sticks. Why would it just happen after I connected to the internet though. Just coincidence maybe.

Oh look, I can make a forward slash now by pressing ctrl -/////. Nifty. Now I can type in URLs again. ¨¨¨¨¨¨ÉÉééèèèÈÈÈççÇÇ~~~¨¨`````` sorry about that. I was fooling around. :teeth:

Hey, does anyone know what you call that thing where you use different keys to make different fonts. I want to look it up.

Oh and Pointy, thanks also, I`ve never had an excuse, opportunity, or ability to use system restore before. I think I`ll try that.

TW, is AVG still free(question mark) I went there and downloaded it, then they told me I needed a registration number for proof of sale. They always wanted you to get a registration number, even when I used to get it free, but there no longer seems to be a place to go to get reg # for free . Do you know of one (not illegal). I wonder if I can use my old one . I should try that. Actually I went to Avast-free instead, so I`ll see how that works out first.

Hey, wanna see something neat. I just discovered this. é² 2² ³¼ ½ ¾

This is kind of cool. I`d never played with these different font sets before.

N4H, i've got no idea if AVG still offer a free version. Mine was free but as i said that was well over a year ago so it could well have changed since then.

No prob. Thanks anyway.

Hey I figured out how to make ligatures (apparently that`s what those little multi-key fonts are called).

And look, I can do a question mark now ????? I`m so proud.:heee:

Hey I think I`ve found a way to fix this without actually having to fix it.

Cool, Pointy. Thank you.

I see what I did wrong now, I linked to Grisoft off another site, and wound up downloading the wrong exe. I have the correct page bookmarked now. I'll get AVG free tomorrow. I'm not completely happy with Avast. I always liked AVG as a scanner.

Hey, I fixed my fonts, or at least they're fixed. I shouldn't really take credit, because I don't have a clue what happened.

I was playing around with the windows character map, just clicking on different fonts, and all of a sudden my fonts just righted themselves. Weird, eh?

have you tried ad aware? its pretty good i don't remember the link but you might google it, that's what i have on my laptop..its free

Ad aware only works against adware, moreover you can only use it to scan, not as continuous protector (unless you cough up the dough). If you're looking into continuous protection against ad/spyware, I suggest using Microsoft AnitSpyware Beta1.

You can set spybot to continuously scan, too. I have it on my machine and love it.
