My husband and I watched Firefly a few years ago, and I recall liking it well enough, but had no desire to rewatch it immediately as I did with BtVS and AtS.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to rewatch it.

Well, I dragged myself through the first four eps, putting off new eps every day, and taking about two weeks just to watch those four eps, and came to a realization.

Firefly is BORING. I don't like any of the characters and couldn't care less what happens to them. The plots are all the same (to the extent I can follow them at all).

I was surprised -- very surprised -- by this conclusion. But nonetheless I put the boxed set back together last night (after only getting halfway through the fifth ep), put it back on the shelf, stuck in the next ep of BtVS on my second rewatch, and greatly improved the quality of my evening.
 
I'll admit, it definitely took some getting used to. The first run, I didn't like it either. Then I rewatched it and ended up really liking it. I was just so used to Joss' Buffyverse, so it felt foreign. Plus I was never a big sci-fi fan anyway. But the one episode that hooked me the first run was "Out of Gas." That episode alone made me reconsider the entire series. And now I'm a Browncoat! But it's not for everyone, IMO, and I certainly wouldn't put it above Buffy, but it's just different strokes for different folks. No hate here. 🙂

I wasn't too fond of it when I first saw it either. I guess it grew on me after a couple watches. Now, I believe it to be one of the best sci fi concept shows ever, and it is.

Firefly is a rare breed of television, and doesn't follow the usual "formula." The characters are, in a lot of ways, unlikable, and the plot is complicated. It's difficult to tell who to "root for", and there are no tidy conclusions at an episode's end. It's not everyone's cup of tea for sure.

There's no reason for you to feel that you need to like all of Joss' shows. I think the first season of DH is crap. I adore Buffy, love AtS, snd see a lot of potential in Firefly but if forced to choose, I'd chose Buffy anyday.

What's to hate? That's just for "silly" people. You gave it a shot, and a little more. That's all everyone can ask for. Many don't even do that.

I have no problem admitting that it wasn't love at first sight for me. As others had said, it took some getting used to. Now I love it but no show is for everyone so I personally don't have a problem with people disliking it. Even if I can joke about it when people don't like it. I've have had to tell people to continue watching since they stopped in the middle of the first episode. So far everyone has been glad they continued watching.
 
Hey, at least you tried it. Not everything is for everyone. Just because you like one Joss Whedon show doesn't guarantee you're going to love them all; I absolutely love BtVS, "Angel", and "Firefly" but "Dollhouse" bores me to tears. 😛
I love "Firefly", but I can understand why some people wouldn't. I actually didn't start loving the show til about the 4th episode. It took a while to get me to actually want to keep watching. But once I did, I was angry that there wasn't more. 😉
 
It didn't really do it to me, but that's probably because I watched it only once. I have to say, The Office bores me too. But that's because I didn't take the time to get to know it. But I could tell both were good.

Thanks, everyone. I do think the show is well done. I think the concept of a kind of space western is genius. The acting is great. I love the made up words and the occasional lapse into Chinese. I love Adam Baldwin. But I just couldn't get into the show. One problem for me is that my t.v. watching time is VERY limited - at most, I can usually only watch one episode of something each day (in addition to what I watch during my mid-day treadmill workout), rarely more than that. For that reason, I'm very picky about what I watch. Part of me wants to give this show one more go, but I doubt I will.
 
Huh, I may be that rare bird that loved it from the very first minute. Then again, I love sci-fi (I'm in the middle of watching Battlestar Galactica right now- one of the best.shows.ever). Do I love it more than Buffy? I don't know, I don't think so, but they're so different, it's hard to compare. But will I "hate" someone who doesn't like it? No way! Everybody has their own opinion, it's OK, kumbaya and all that stuff. 😀

I tried the first ep of BG and couldn't get into that either, at all. So maybe it's the sci-fi thing.
I've been meaning to try it, but I know it was cancelled so it has questions and plot likes to sort out. I don't want to watch the show only to love it just for it to end out of nowhere leaving me wondering about what happened to certain characters :/

Yes, that's kind of disappointing, but it is sooo worth it!
It's all good. Thinking back I kinda didn't fall in love with Buffy immediately. I watched several episodes before I truly loved it. I already had crap expectations going into Firefly though, and it did take a few episodes before I warmed up to it properly. In saying that, I hated like 80% of the characters. Only Mal, River, Jayne and Saffron were in the least interesting to me.

I thought it was obvious that it would be an awesome show when they launched the cry baby, very early on in the pilot. Brilliant stuff. lol

For me Firefly was my introduction to Joss Whedon and his shows though.
I decided to check out Buffy because of the greatness of Firefly.

You're definitely not alone. I have loved this show since the first time I watched Serenity. I've done a couple of rewatches and it only gets better. There are a lot of good tv shows, and Joss' shows are no exception, but Firefly is different. The feel it has is incredible. Even when they're not spewing out awesome lines (which they do a lot), even when there's not awesome action, even when the characters aren't flourishing as individuals with real personalities - the show is still awesome. It's the moment to moment stuff that makes it work for me. For example, in the third episode (fourth if you count the pilot as two) when they're playing some strange game with a tire hanging from the ceiling. There's nothing special about that moment; that's what makes it special.

Firefly perfectly captures the day to day life of people trying to make a living - and it does it in space. That's what's so amazing about this show. And I noticed that on the very first watch.

I watched Firefly first in its initial broadcast and I kept saying that the series had potential, but didn't quite hang together. Then I got the chance to watch all the episodes back-to-back at a movie theater starting at midnight and going through to noon the next day. It was absolutely amazing to see them all in the right order, the characterization made sense, there was tonal flow, and it just took off at Our Mrs. Reynolds.

Really an amazing experience and I hope that movie theaters, in their current state of economic desperation, start doing this more often.
 
No reason to hate you 😉

I loved it immediatly mostly because I had seen the movie first (I was like 13 when the show was airing so I never saw it on TV) and I had already fallen in love with the characters. So liking the show was much more easier despite the fact that it was "unfinished".
