I just wondered if any of you women on the pill can tell me if it has affected your personality? I know it's meant to ease the pain of cramps etc but I just wondered if it's possible it could alter a females mood, eg: make her miserable or less fun?

Absolutely.

The first pill I was put on when I was 16 made me hugely depressed. I found myself crying at the drop of a hat, and my moods were definitely swinging. I also put on a little bit of weight as well.

I spoke to my doctor about it and he swapped me to a different brand which works fine with me. Makes my skin better, lessens my period pain and no unexpected pregnancies. Wonderful stuff.

Very informative, thankyou so much!
The pill can have all sorts of unpleasant side effects. One brand that I was on made me pretty moody, so yeah. However, I adore the one I'm on now.

This explains a lot, thankyou :)
Being that birth control pills are putting small amounts of hormones into your body, of course it can make you act differently! I've seen huge changes in some of my friends' personalities when they've been on certain kinds of BC.

Yep. Wrong pill can make you (or at least made me) crazy. There are lots of different ones; the right one shouldn't do that (or at least didn't to me).

Didn't change my personality, but made my usually bad migraines so severe that I considered going to the ER. Thus, I've only taken them for probably 3 months out of my entire reproductive life.

The pill made my skin better as it was the main reason I was on it in the first place. My periods were a breeze and I felt my hair was less greasy as well because of it. Annoyingly my doctor took me off the pill at the beginning of the year and my skin has got worse again.

Ha, that might be the reason why I never had acne!

OMG I feel your pain--had to switch pills and now get occasional acne whereas I never did before...
Yeah. I have been on the pill before and i had terrible mood swings on it as did my friend. Now i have the implant instead and it seems to stop making me depressed as much. But yeah basically different types of contraception can alter women's hormones and make their mood change.

I hate the pill. I was on it for almost 10 years and didn't realize how much it affected me til I stopped taking it.

I've tried *counts* eight different pills and they all either made me very depressed or gave me mood swings like woah. One or two made my skin and migraines even worse than they are naturally. Really, it's very hard and down to luck to find the right pill. I've given up trying to find the right one after the last and decided to just bear with the cramps for a week a month as I don't actually need it for contraception.

I really really suffer from the cramps, they kill me. But I'm not taking the pills for a few reasons, even though my doctor recommended it to me. So I just take regular pain killers, but really strong ones and they sometimes cause different kind of pain. None of that affect me mood wise or personality wise.

Yeah, that's how I usually get through my period, too.
Christopher agrees: What's the implant? You don't have to answer if you feel uncomfortable!

No it's fine. It's a small stick about the size of a hairgrip and it gets put into your arm and can stay in for upto 3 years. I love it just for the fact i don't have to remember to take my pill or anything so i am completely covered for upto 3 years 🙂

When I had the money for it, it was wonderful. It lessened my cramps, evened out my moods, improved my skin, and I even lost weight on it. I'd like to go back on it, but I don't have the money to pay for it. It's over $200/yr for the kind I was on, and I don't have health insurance.

PPH can help you out with free or affordable pill options, also if you're in college most school provide low cost pills for students w/o insurance. ;)
Apologies in advance that this is slightly off-topic Christopher.

I think the one I'm on now is the 6th brand I've tried if you count the patch which is what I started on. It made me rashy though so then I switched to pills. Next brand gave me mood swings so I switched. The next brand was so much fun. It made me lose half of my hair. Well I stopped taking it and switched brands. It slowly stopped falling out, then a few months later the new pill made it start falling out again. One more try, same result. I stopped taking the pill for about 2 years. Then I started having painful ovulations. I've always had horrible cramps and regularly got ovarian cysts but this was way different. Worst pain I've ever felt. So I would have that pain plus my period pain every month and the only option was to go back on the pill. I went against my doctors recommendation on the brand and chose one myself. I pretty much figured that if I'm going back on the stupid pill and lose my hair, I'm getting something out of it. So now I'm on a brand where I get a period every 3 months. Now I have no pain and, thank god, all of my hair. It really does just come down to pure luck.

I feel you. The brand I'm on was costing me $600 a year, I was about to stop taking it. I applied for family planning medicaid and got approved though.

No problem mate, I find this stuff interesting.
Oh yes, the wrong pill can do all sorts of wacky things to your body. Mood swings, cramps, personality change, upset stomach, it can help ache or make it worse, weight gain or loss, headaches and migraines...some ladies have pretty big reactions to different pills, others (like myself) have no negative reactions.

miserable or less fun?

All the kinds of hormon-based contraceptives I've ever tried has either made me miserable, less fun (let's just say that it was definitely doing it's job, not the faintest chance of any babies) or both. I've just given up on them. Some made my period pains hellishly bad, some made me sick more or less every day, the implant made me feel pregnant all the time ...

I had to take it very young, so I couldn't notice any change before/after (except for the going-away pain) but I didn't notice any mood or physical change when I stopped taking it.

Now I wonder, why do you ask? 😀

Any hormone based treatment can alter your moods for better or worse. It took a long time before I found one to suit but I'm taking a break now as I was on the pill for nearly 15 years!

I used to be on the pill for about 4 years and I never had any issues with migraines or mood swings. I went on it for dermatological reasons, however. I've been meaning to make an appointment to get back on a less expensive brand though. The one they had me on before cost $50 a month.
