OK,

I have only seen a couple of episodes of Firefly and I was far from impressed.
I watched Serenity and that was, in my opinion, worse - BUT that could be because I haven't seen the entire series.

So, anyway, the local second hand shop has Firefly for sale at £12.

So, for the price of a reasonable take away(take out) I could have the season on DVD HOWEVER, that £12 does buy one mighty nice take away.

So, you have two goals. Convince me that I should buy the DVD over a Jalfrezi with Pilau and Naan for 2 AND by telling me about the show.

Some of you guys know me pretty well, what would make this show appeal to me.

FYI - if you say because Joss write it or because it has such and such in it, you obviously don't know me.

I'd take the curry any day. But that's because I'm a pig.
And also because I don't intend to buy Firefly ever.. I watched it when it was on tv, and I have serenity, but that's as far as it goes.

Good luck with the getting convinced though [I will be severly disappointed if you don't choose the takeaway!]

Damn! That Jalfrezi sounds mighty tempting...I already have the Firefly DVDs, so I choose curry...as long as it comes with a mushroom bhaji or something spinach-ey 🙂

But seriously...Jewel Staite and Morena Baccarin are quite the hotties; the backstory is well thought out; the "no sound in space" and Battlestar Galactica style space camera work (although I think Firefly pre-dated BSG in using that style, so strictly speaking it should be Firefly style camera work) is excellently atmospheric; it has Chinese cursing, which sounds so much better than plain ol' English effin' and jeffin'; and the stories are quite magnificent...oh come on Al, you know you want it...it's only twelve quid fer chrissake...Mrs P paid about three times that when it was my birthday pressie 🙂

If anything, Joss has refined his style in Firefly. It's almost as if he was experimenting with Buffy, and now that he's writing about adults instead of teenagers, he can really show his range. I think that Serenity is much better after the series (I saw Serenity first, as well, and while I liked it, I was a bit confused and out-of-the-loop-y); knowing who Book is and who Inara is and why they left the ship and what all this tension between characters is about really does help Serenity to make more sense.

And like Mr. Pointy said - Chinese cursing!

You have what is referred to as bad taste 😛 haha, but really It's a great series and if you did pick it up you'd love. Joss Whedon is a genius with his writing, the show looks phenomenal, not to mention how in depth the characters are. I own it, and have seen the entire 13 episodes? haha about 5 or 6 times, they're really good.

I have Serenity, bought it years ago an then during the January Sales went mental and bought Firefly. I watched the first episode and don't really have any great desire to watch anymore. I know thats blasphemy round these parts but really I found that I was wanting to like it more than actually liking it...was that a sentence?

So basically I am no help whatsoever Al but I get where your coming from. Season 1 of Buffy it aint😉

I've actually never seen any of the episodes, but here's convincing work anyway:
You don't know how longer the DVD will be on sale at that shop...but food you could get every day.

Ok I thought of a reason. Buy Firelfy, watch it the whole way through a couple of times so you definietly knows whats what and then come on here and berate people for being so deeply stupid for thinking its fantastic.😀

Hello Cutie
Best idea I've read... I'm tempted to buy it now, just for that!!
Ohh, I also have a new idea: buy it, watch it, sell it on ebay and buy yourself the food from the money you get on ebay.

No.

🙂

If you don't want to watch it, your loss. It's brilliant TV. End of.

LMAO! You're becoming a regular Oz.

Second that!!

Um, because Jewel Stait is a hottie?

Because Adam Baldwin is MUCH better as the bored mercenary than he is as a 'liason'?

Naked Nathan Fillion? Oh, sorry, that's my reason for watching. 😉

Jasmine as a hard ass?

To see Summer Glau before she got all Terminator'd?

Okay, I'll come back later with some more when I think of 'em. 😀

I like yours! Well ok.....I like the Nathan Fillion one!
To see Summer Glau before she got all Terminator'd?

Maybe she's different in Firefly (I've not seen so much to know for sure), but in Serenity, River isn't all that different from Cameron in Sarah Connor Cronicles. She's emotionally retarded, a kick ass, and totally weird. So not a good reason in my opinion.

[If you want to see her as something different (bar the Angel episode), watch The Unit- at least she's human with human emotions!]

I think BEG got it right with the 'no'.

Serenity, I watched.

That movie should have drawn me in. It shouldn't be dependent on the series for people who haven't seen it, it should have been strong and good enough to make me think, 'OK, that was a good movie, let me get the series'.

The episodes that I saw were all recommended by people I trust here, there were 3. I didn't like any of them.

I just don't see anything in this show worth watching.

As for the Jewel Staite and Morrena Baccarin they're OK looking but I've got Stargate for them🙂, but even then the ladies of the show don't really do it for me (nor do the men before someone tries to make a funny).

Ohhh well, the Jalfrezi was really nice last night.

Ohhh and BEG, brilliant TV not likely.

Thats opinion, but I gotta say I loved Firefly! Obviously it didn't or wont appeal to everyone, or else it would still be on TV. But I've always though that if Firefly had gone on longer I would have liked it more then Buffy and Angel.

Out of a matter of interest what episodes where suggested? I know what ones I'd suggest, but they would be cuz of the characters I love being in them!

Ohh and here is me thinking that it was a matter of fact!

I was told to watch

Train Job, Jaynestown and War Stories.

Really didn't like any of them and none of the characters appeal to me at all.
Add to that Serenity and if you don't like what is essentially of 1/3 of a show then the other 2/3 isn't going to make up for it when it is only, in essense, 15 episodes long (count Serenity as an episode)

Try "Out of Gas." If, after that, you still don't like it, I'll leave you alone to your blasphemous curmudgeonlyness. 🙂
Thanks but not going to.

I have given up on Firefly and this thread proves it.

I've read the passionate cries from Buffy fans on other threads for Buffy and Angel but this one, not many people cared. Can't be that great. Seems to confirm my belief that most people just like what Joss tells them and he told you lot to love this show so you did.

Ohh well.

Hmmm, I definitely wouldn't have recommended that combo of eps. It's funny when it was on TV they switched around the order that the eps were in with The Train Job being first and then they were reshuffled for the DVD.

IF you were to ever give it another chance I would say go from the start. There is no point in choosing random eps, you don't get the full story, you miss out on the little bits, you just get the characters at face value and you don't get to see them develop, which they do surprisingly well for only 14 episodes, also watching a character develop makes you like them more.

Again I would say if you don't watch the serious I would personally believe that it's just your loss. Firefly is great!
