Convince Me

MAN! I never thought THIS would happen, but I think I might have JUST THIS ONCE been able to out-wit you!

CAPITALIST: 1.) A person who invests capital in a business, esp. one having a major interest in an important interprise

The lady I got it from, was selling off the crap her brother had left at her house when he moved years ago and said he didn't want anymore. So, technically, she didn't invest anything in a business or in the DVDs...only in her brother, which often tends to happen in a family. She'd never sold on eBay before, in fact, I had to explain to her that she couldn't ship them to me for the quoted price and spent days explaining how to weigh things and calculate shipping costs.
And, she claimed she was going to end up sending the money to her brother with his baby shower gifts. So, really she was more like a free storage facility and bizarre charity worker. Or...kind of like Rumplestiltskin weaving the straw into gold. She wasn't a capitalist...she was a Fairy Tale Character!

That you're missing out on fantastic television to try and make a point to capitalists you'll never meet?

I don't feel I am missing out and all that matters in my world is me.

Also, where do you get the idea that I am trying to make a point to capitalists?
I said I refuse to pay full price, I didn't say I made a big deal about it.
Nor is it impossible that I would meet these 'capitalists' because who knows what I will do tomorrow but today, things that I am doing and the people I mix with are the people that become these people.

So although your point was supposed to me amusing, I should suggest you get a clue.

Capitalist:
1. An owner (or sometimes only a manager) of capital.
International Economics Glossary: C

Capital:
1. (n) capital, working capital (assets available for use in the production of further assets)
2. (n) capital (wealth in the form of money or property owned by a person or business and human resources of economic value)
WordNet Search - 3.0

Therefore, a capitalist is someone who owns wealth in the form of money or property of economic value.

You supported a capitalist, darlin'. 🙂 If the person had GIVEN it to you, that wouldn't be capitalist. If the government had taken it away from her and given it to you, THAT wouldn't be capitalist. Buying it from her is capitalism.

AH! But, the factor here would be 1.) DID she really "own" it? It did, after all, technically belong to her brother who just no longer wanted these boxes and 2.) If she wasn't keeping the money, then the only real VALUE to her would be in getting it out of her house.
I suppose, over all, I second handedly gave the money to her brother...who unknowingly was the capitalist, but then she was giving him the money as a gift. More like a charity auction.

So, he gifted it to her. She became the new owner, with no overhead. She then sold it, and received payment. She then chose to give the profits (the entire value of the product) to the original owner as a charitable contribution.

Capitalism. Compassionate Capitalism, but Capitalism none-the-less.

The problem here is that you simply REFUSE to see the difference between Capitalism and Rumplestiltkinism.
For it to be capital she'd have to own it with the intent to use it to produce more wealth.
Instead, she spun garbage into gold for the benefit of a baby. The only difference being she didn't hold these boxes of "gold" over her brother's head to gain custody of his first born, she did it to be "Fabulous Aunt".

I suppose we're at an impass until you conceed to fully understanding the VAST importance of Rumplestiltkinism in every day lives! :lmao:

Or, you may be partly right.....again. ::crying2: But, ONE OF THESE DAYS I'm going to PREVAIL!

I prefer the term Imaginative.

One would think that someone who did their thesis on Buffy would more fully understand the impact of Fairy Tale Monsters on our society. But, oh well.

ON the other hand, I DID succeed in NOT contributing to the Capitalists who helped butcher and cancel the show in the first place and who, at the time, we trying to keep the profits from said capital from the writers. Which was my goal.

That you did. Pat yourself on the back.
Okay BotD I know that you have made up your mind that you will not be buying Firefly and that is fine, to each their own, but I just wanted to back up why I like the show not only for the Whedon Mark. I actually was never really interested in ever seeing this show when I heard of it, even though it was a Joss creation. I usually go more for the fantasy genre that the Sci Fi so I was kind of like "meh I won't like it", but my philosophy teacher who is a huge Buffy/Angel fan and a whole bunch of other shows that I love fan told me that I would really like it. Then my friend said it was great too and when I saw it for free online @ hulu.com (which is a completely legal site btw - it is owned by NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox and whatever other networks) I decided to watch it and I fell in love with the first episode. It was great the comedy is definately what I loved about the show. The way that I could see the Whedon language come out in an entirely new genre was exciting to me. Then as I continued to watch I just loved how detailed this world was. It was amazing to me that someone could imagine this entirely different world and then write it all down. I would have to say that I just loved the show (It doesn't hurt that Simon is a total hottie  ), but I just wanted to state my point with a bit more than just saying Whedon wrote it. It is the just the complexity of the universe that kept me watching. So anyway BotD glad to see that you came to a conclusion that works for you, but I still recommend it to anyone who wants to watch an extremely well written show -- and I agree with BEG watch it from the begining.

Just do what I do with Torchwood.

I don't get it. Most likely I never will get it. Other people do get it, but me and Torchwood just don't connect.

Every once in awhile though I slip over to a streaming site and watch an episode, or two just to see if I can get what they get. Never works though.

See, if Firefly continued, maybe, just maybe, I'd do that, but I don't think I can stomach the series.

Maybe part of the reason I can't get into this series is that I know it ended after a few episodes - though thats not the entire reason, I do get bored with the characters that I have seen and the movie bored me completely.

I know, it's like me with Torchwood. I just can't stand those characters. Well, I can kind of take Tosh. The rest just turn me off. Yet I hear others talk about them like they're something special. I can see somebody having the same reaction to Firefly, or really any other show.

Check out this - Worn out by Whedonites

It's a Whedon dis, which is not uncommon. It's a good way to get cheap hits. She gets off track a bit, and tries to slip into the idea that because she doesn't like Whedon stuff there's something wrong with it, but the basic premise is valid. Some stuff we're just not going to get, no matter how much somebody else likes it.

I'll read that later.

Torchwood see, Cap'n Jack, I love. I thought his acting a little hammy at times but generally Barrowman does a good job.

Owen, didn't like in the first season but loved him in season 2 - until they didn't kill him off. Then by the end of the season I loved him again.

Tosh, I've always liked her.

I like and dislike Ianto equally.

Gwen could top herself tomorrow and I couldn't care.

I find the second season far better than the first - maybe if Firefly had continued I'd have given it a go.

Heck, I wasn't huge on Angel season one until Parting Gifts.

Gwen could top herself tomorrow and I couldn't care.

Spot on! I hate Gwen, for someone who supposed to protect the Earth from alien threats...she's so bloody stupid!

Anyways, I can't agree with the linked article. Calling the cast of Buffy bad actors seems like such a cheap shot because she couldn't think of anything else. I GET that a show about people who fights vampires and other nastiness might not be your cup of tea, but to call the acting bad or the writing bad is just plain idiocy. I'm sure the multiple awards the show has won, not to mention the army of loyal fans who before Buffy, had never heard of Joss Whedon, therefore making her argument about us watching the show because it has his name on it rather retarded.

In defense of Firefly, I just want to add http://www.richlabonte.net/tvvote/index.html (I would have posted this earlier, but I was an unworthy noob).
SHOW / VOTES - 6,854,714 total Top 40 votes recorded as of 04/29/08
------------------
Firefly 633745
Xena: Warrior Princess 504638
Bonanza 440369
Gunsmoke 279449
Battlestar Galactica (2004) 253935
Farscape 236145
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 227907

As you can see, Firefly leads by a whopping ~130,000 votes, and that number increases every day. Now, tell me, what horrible TV show is voted as the best by 600,000+ people?

I know it doesn't necessarily mean anything. I know people still dislike the show. But, admit it, it's impressive.

Oh, and feel free to vote your hearts out for Buffy/Angel/whatever, it's a great site. You can vote once an hour, which is cool. I dunno if the link has been posted elsewhere or not, for as previously mentioned, I am an unworthy noob.
