When ever I watch Cruel Intentions I always get sad at the end for Kathryn. All of my friends who have seen it think I am crazy because she was the "villian" of the movie and you are sopossed to feel bad for Annette or Sebastian. Everyone seems to be glad that Kathryn got what she desevered but I don't feel that way. Does anyone else feel that way?

I am glad she got what was coming to her but I did feel bad. I mean over the entire movie you see what a downright evil person she is but I still feel bad for her at that moment how it all came out. One of my favorite movie scenes ever. I think the thing that makes me feel sad for her is that tear, she never showed any reason to be upset about anything like she couldn't be then that tear perfect.

I loved the ending but I did feel bad for her cause she was so upset looking when it all went down.

It was a good ending though, perfect way to end the movie.

I feel that way! I've always felt that way, always been on Kathryn's side 🙂
She's basically a messed up and misunderstood girl and I don't think it was sweet justice at all. I feel very sorry for her even though she obviously made mistakes.

People have always called me and my sister crazy too for rooting for the 'villain' in this story. The thing is to me she's only the villain on the surface, a deeper look into her character to me shows that she's not the villain at all.

I loved Kathryn! :)

Good point I think it says a lot that even though Kathryn was so evil I still love her. She is not the only one to blame for sure in that movie.

I fully agree 100%. :)
I cried at the end. I remember that very clearly. I was at the cinema with my mom and few of my friends, and everybody cried when Sebastian got hit by car.. I felt bed, but I didn't cried. When she was discovered, and when that tear slided down her cheek I said very loudly with my crying voice 'So unfair!!!!' People turned around and looked at me very, very strangly..

I think what's sad about it is at the end we're reminded that she's still just a kid in high school. I wasn't rooting for Kathryn at all, nor was I rooting for Sebastian. You were kinda watching to see these characters get what they deserved, though when Sebastian starts to reform you see hope and light which causes Sabastian to become more likable but it only pushed Kathryn farther. She was in love with someone who had eyes for another so she: tried to make one girl a slut, bet on the virginity of a Christian, sent her lover off to take care of her step-brother/love and destroyed the relationship between Sebastian and Annette by threatening only to have her reputation destroyed while Sebastian dies. She had it comin', haha. We're just Sarah fans, that's why we love K-ryn. She played it really well.

soulunsung agrees: Actually, I seriously disagree with the "we're just Sarah fans," statement. I like a lot of different celebs who have played at least one role where I didn't care for their character & still liked them. I actually liked Kathryn & felt differently.

Kathryn was a horrible person but I liked her too. I was alluding to "feeling bad" for her, not so much liking her. To feel bad for seems strange to me especially after all she did. I was looking at it from a real-life perspective; someone like that would not get my sympathy. Would she get yours? The only reason I felt bad was because, like I said, we're reminded at the end that they were all just kids, including and especially her. You may disagree with me about the love of the character coming from being Sarah fans but that just makes you an exception. I see a lot of love for this character that is derived from being a Sarah fan. Not saying it's a bad thing. Sarah crying is a hard to watch, thus creating sympathy.

I didn't feel any pity or unpity for Katryn but I clearly remember thinking that the last scene, with the music and the acting was just 100% awesome. I just even forgot about what I thought of her, I just thought it was a beautiful way to show someone's fall, to see all her world and reputation crumble and to see Annette get away avenged. That was so beautiful I didn't really care who was right or wrong 😀

I don't necessarily think that Kathryn was a horrible person, so much as she was a messed up kid who did a lot of messed up evil crap that we've seen countless other character's who've come before her do, ie. Cassidy on Veronica Mars. I do feel some amount of sympathy for her and I don't agree that it makes me an exception. That's honestly, your opinion and of course you're entitled to it, and I appreciate that.

I'm also coming from a different approach to the real-life perspective, in the sense that there were probably things that happened in her life that brought her to that point. I'm not necessarily saying that she was wrong or excusing her, but we don't know everything as in all of the behind-the-scenes things that went on with her character. Then again, I tend to love character's like hers, because they're so multi-layered and sometimes what appears to be so bad, necessarily isn't in one sense.

And I've seen a lot of love for this character that didn't have to do with the fact that Sarah played the role, as well. I've been around the fandom for this movie, which isn't quite as large as some fandoms stemming around other movies, but it's there the same and I've witnessed the opposite as much as you've witnessed the former of which you've made mention.

She doesn't just get my sympathy because it's Sarah crying, she gets my sympathy because I truly loved her character for all of her faults and misdeeds and for the way that in the end, it is incredibly sad what happens to her. For me, it was just one wrong (which, a lot of people feel is a bit of poetic justice in a way) trying to right a lot of other wrongs that came before. I'll not change my opinion on it, no matter how many people try and debunk it.

So, while I respect that this is your opinion, I'll politely defer to my own. 🙂

Zeppo agrees: I hope you don't think I'm trying to debunk, I just wanted some elaboration as to why you'd wanna cheer her on so thank you for that.

No, that's not what I meant to imply at all. I was just simply saying, in a round about way that I respect that your opinion is different than mine, but I'll just happily stick to mine. 🙂

I apologize, if you felt otherwise.

I don't think that it is just because Sarah played Kathryn. I just loved her character as a whole and even though Kathryn did some pretty horrible things her public humiliation was way worse then what she desevered. She was betrayed by some one she was close to and all of her darkest secerts were printed for the world to read. No one deserves that.
