Deleting The Spuffy Moment

Anyone on this Board who hasn't been living in total isolation since the turn of the century knows exactly which moment that I am referring to: "I love you..." "No, you don't. But thanks for saying it." It was there for all to see in "Chosen," so why was it edited out in the flashback in the "Conviction?" That whole scene, including the flaming hands, was for some unknown reason removed, and, to me at least, that scene has always the most powerful moment in the entire battle sequence, the single scene that completely defined Spike's evolution from evil monster and sworn enemy of the Slayer in Season 2, to hero, Champion, and a man deserving of Buffy's love. And that scene should have been just as important to Angel Season 5 Spike as it had been to Buffy Season 7 Spike.

So, why do you think that the scene was edited out?
 
Honestly? Time. I don't think it was needed in the beginning of "Just Rewards", because the flashback's only purpose was to clue people who didn't watch Buffy in on what happened to Spike, and that exchange between Buffy/Spike takes up time and really isn't essential for the viewer to understand what's going on.

Yeah, I'm gonna go for the boring, sensible answer of Time too.
But...
If you want a more 'controvercial' answer (that i don't necessarily subscribe to) then it could be argued that it was not included so that the idea of "Angel luvs Buffy 4eva" was preserved in the Angelverse and also so that they didn't infect it with the messy, contradictory relationship of Spuffy more than they needed to 😉

I agree. The episode was about Spike returning incorporeal and all. The only reason the flashback was shown was to show the non-Buffy viewers (and forgetful people) what had happened to Spike.

They were just trying to clue people in what had happened to him on Buffy.
and yeah it would take up more time explaining.

I love the 'Final battle' song so much.

What a great question, WA. I hadnt thought of this.
Honestly? When Spike joined the cast of Angel I think it was really important to the writers to protray him as his own character, as not associated with Buffy. Why? Who knows, really.

Here is my stab at it: The hand-clasp scene was very important to Spikes personal journey with Buffy, yes - but was that exchange, those words spoken, important to the role he was going to play on Angel? Perhaps not. After all, Spike mentions he saved the world early on. The scee in Chosen is a scene that the importance of and full weight of is only understood in context, and only if you've seen all of Buffy. Perhaps the writers don't want to confuse viewers whom hadn't been keeping up with Buffy. Anyhow that's my guess.

It is a beautiful scene, though. The hand-clasp is a testament to the "fire" that exists between them. Great stuff.

It's been speculated that the burning hand clasp scene was Spike finally giving Buffy back the fire tyhat she had lost in "Once More With Feeling."

As for deleting the "I love you" scene, I would think that including it would have made Spike's immediate question upon returning, "Where's Buffy?" and his statement to Angel, "You can't keep us apart" make much more sense.
 
Yes, I'd agree with the speculation. Gotta love that continuity.

Great point. And then of course, it never seemed in character for him to not go back to her. This is one of my issues with Spike coming to AtS. Sure, Spike has his pride...but let's not forget he's a self-proclamed "love's bitch", right? Love has always controlled and inspired his actions. Seems unlikely he'd rather stay with Angel than go help Buffy. Just sayin'.

I know, I know they needed him on Angel...but still.
 
I would have loved for Spike to have actually left at the end of "Destiny," after becoming corporeal and kicking Angel's ass, of course, been completely absent in "Harm's Way," (he wasn't needed there anyway), then return to LA with a smirk on his face in "Soul Purpose," but refuse to say anything about where he had been or what he had done. If nothing else, it would have driven Angel completely insane. Plus, it would have added even more speculation to the Spuffy/Bangel controversy.

IIRC they don't show SMG at all? They'd have had to pay her to use the clip 😉 But I really think it was a time/importance thing.
