not sure if this should be in the season 3 or 7 thread, but this thread can pretty much be about any d'hoffryn and anya related discussions. i have a couple of questions about them.

1. when i was watching the 'selfless' commentary, they mentioned that in the scene near the end when anya says she wants the vengeance she did to be undone, that this hurt d'hoffryn, because she was his favourite and like a daughter to him. i guess it would be kind of like buffy saving twelve people, and then telling giles, 'you know what? i wish i hadnt saved them; i want them to be dead now'. that whole thing is a discussion topic in itself, but anyway, like i said, they said that she and d'hoffryn had kind of a father-daughter relationship. however, earlier in 'doppelgangland', he refuses to help her become a demon again. you think that if he liked her that much, and she was such a great vengeance demon, he would want to try and help her. he must've had the power since he was the one who gave her her power back later on. i havent seen 'doppelgangland' in a while; am i forgetting something, or is it just one of those things?

2. also, if he liked her that much, i get why he didnt want her to be killed, but why did he want to hurt her by killing hallie? he said something like he wanted to go for the pain. is it just because he is evil and all?

3. my final question is, what was the deal with all that 'her true name' stuff? like, how and why did d'hoffyn know what it was?

(sorry if these are all lame questions; they're just things ive been wondering :silly🙂

Well, first off with question 1, I would say maybe by letting her go in season 3 he hoped she would fail and want to come back to him? Maybe that was what he was hoping for? which would make no sense either since he can pretty much forsee the future, as he forsaw she would not make it in the final battle in season 7.

for the last one, her true name is Aud. Which was shown in that episode at the beginning.

Edit:

Sorry have to post again...too late to edit. I shouldn't say that it doesnt make sense because she did come back to him. Maybe he didn't realize it would take so long? Or maybe his evil self could see it would be because Xander hurt her and he wanted her to be hurt and come crawling back? Ways to look at it I guess.

There's a term that might have a place hear. Or two, rather. You need to: "Face the Consequences of your actions" and "learn from your mistakes". As a father figure, D'Hoffryn would probably want Anya to see that she's not invincible, and losing cost her her powers. And the "he would want her to come back to him" thing fits here as well.

2. also, if he liked her that much, i get why he didnt want her to be killed, but why did he want to hurt her by killing hallie? he said something like he wanted to go for the pain. is it just because he is evil and all?
As he is a demon, a higher level demon at that, yes, I believe he wanted to go for the pain. Hallie was another one of his favorites, but he had to show Anya, once again, that her actions had consequences.

3. my final question is, what was the deal with all that 'her true name' stuff? like, how and why did d'hoffyn know what it was?
Did you forget the part where he came to her when Anya was called "Aud" way back in that village after she made Olaf a troll? I don't mean to sound mean, but the answer to that question was pretty much there in the episode.

never thought of that; good insight :)
im not sure you guys are getting my third question; sorry, thats probably my fault. i do remember that scene, and i know what he said about her having a true name and not knowing it and all, and what it was. i meant, how did he know what it was? did he make it up for her, and then she used that name? or did he see the future and mean 'well, this is the demon name you're going to have, so thats your real name'?

although, based on what you've said, it seems really simple, and that he just saw the future and that that was the name she would have, and this was just an altogether stupid question. if its any consolation, i had had very little sleep yesterday, and some of the stuff i said or did (mostly off the boards) was really out of it. sorry guys .

however, i do apprieciate the insight on the other two questions. i didnt think of that and thats actually a good thought. kudos, sk8rj04! 😀

EDIT:
also, evil family relationships are clearly much more dangerous than good family ones :silly:

oh, yeah, you did too. more sorry-ness . except, i thought that aud was the name she thought was her name, and d'hoffryn said her true name was anyanka...

either way, the other stuff you said was still helpful 🙂.

With the name thing...let's see if I can clear it up.

Xander tells D'Hoffryn to quit calling her "Anyanka" because that is not her name. He wants her to be called "Anya" Yet D'Hoffryn was pointing out that "Anya' is not her true name either, it is actually "Aud". He knows it's Aud because she told him when she first met him after cursing her boyfriend.

With D'Hoffryn refusing to give her power back in season three, I think he was just truly upset with her that she was defeated. She had done so good for over a thousand years, and finally she slipped up and made a mistake, and he as ticked off about it. I think he only gave her the power back because of the sympathy he felt for her when she was left at the alter.

all right, im now kind of answering part of my own question, but since it seems to have become such a confusion, i just dug into the script to get some quotes 🙂.

when he meets anya, the following conversation takes place:
ANYA: I am Aud.
D'HOFFRYN: Are you? Hm...I'm afraid you don't see your true self. You are Anyanka.

and what SB is talking about is here:
XANDER: Her name is Anya.
D'HOFFRYN: Actually, funny historical side-bar, her original name was-

from this, i was under the impression that her "true" name, according to d'hoffryn, was anyanka, but her "original" name, like the name she was born with, was aud. feel free to correct me if im wrong.

this is actually making me think of another question. do you guys think her "true" name really is anyanka? even though she was anyanka for hundreds of years, she ended up as anya, and when given the choice, she seemed to prefer being anya, after not being anyanka anymore. any thoughts?

EDIT:
and if d'hoffryn knew what was going to happen all along, i can understand why he would make her a vengeance demon in the first place: all the years of vengeance before she lost her powers. but then why would he do it again if he knew that a few months later he would take away her powers again? im confused about exactly what he knows, and how that motivates his actions.

I think she actually preferred Anya. She never really went by Anyanka (as in, she called herself that) The only people that I ever remember calling her that was... Giles (in the Wish when he's researching her), Hallie and D'Hoffryn.

Aud was her name when she dated a troll, maybe she wants to forget that time. Anyanka was her name as a demon. She must have gotten used to being called Anya.

Why did D'Hoffryn make Aud a Vengeance Demon in the first place ?.
Simple answer, he wouldn't have been in the series.

( Completely of this topic but if Anya was a Troll, suddenly Willow's comment to Xander, 'I don't know what you see in her', would have more meaning. )

The relationship of D'Hoffryn and Anya was like a pimp and one of his stable of girls. Every one of them (to hear him tell it) is his "favorite" and he is always supportive, even loving, as long as they do their job. But once their usefulness is over, he has no more need for them. Quite possibly the demon who broke up Xander and Anya's wedding was assisted by one of D'Hoffryn's other vengeance demons, and he knew about the whole thing in advance, and was in effect using that to bring his most effective vengeance demon back into the fold. That would also explain why he later wanted to have her killed. It would be bad for business for him to lose one of his girls by letting her quit of her own free will.(Remember, when she was first made human it was a punishment for losing her amulet) A pimp might "fire" a girl if she wasn't doing her job properly. That was punishment, and a lesson for his other girls. If a member of his stable were to quit on her own, he would have to have her beaten of killed to keep his other girls from following suit.
