Did Buffy love Spike?

^ my favorite color is not purple 😀 OH my god color debate... give it a rest people 😉 We are here to once and for all settle the fact that Spike loved Buffy, and Buffy loved Spike.

She did love him. OMG end of story! PARTY 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😛😀😀😀

^ I know. It was so obvious. If people didn't believe she denied herself loving him in season 6, then they should just jump to season 7. In season 7 Buffy had accepted that she actually felt something for another person. Vampire. And this time it was a real love. Not the puppy first love Bangel.

Re:

IMO I don't think Buffy really knew what her feelings were for Spike there at the end. I believe Buffy loved Spike, but perhaps was not IN love with Spike. Maybe given more time it would have progressed, but there he goes with the saving the world again...*sigh*

Hmm, I have to disagree with you on this one, hun. 😛

While I do agree with you that Buffy struggled with figuring out what her feelings for Spike really were, I think she didn't fully realize how much she loved him until he was gone and when he was about to die.

Think about it this way: Spike has been the one constant in Buffy's life. No matter what, since season four, whenever she's turned around, he's been there. He's always just Spike, whether it's being the replacement Cordelia to the vampire who takes care of Dawn and Joyce to her lover. He always survived the battles against the big bad, and she knew that he'd stay with the Scoobies and take care of them and her family because he was in love with her. Spike never left. He was the one man in her life who hadn't left. Angel had left her and Riley had left her and Buffy never thought that Spike would ever leave, the thought never really crossed her mind. You never know what you really have until it's gone, and this was what it took for Buffy to realize what Spike meant to her.

I think Buffy expected Spike to stay even after the scene in "Seeing Red" and she was really in for a surprise when she found out that he left. We never saw what happened over the summer in between season six and seven, but I think Buffy probably went through many internal debates about what her feelings were for Spike. On one hand, the bathroom scene. On the other hand, she'd been so horrible to him, using him and beating the sh*t out of him and saying really nasty things to him (which is why some people think Spike had his reasons for that scene). Personally, I think that it's both of their faults.

Moving on from that, however, and continuing with the one constant in her life explanation. Once he returned to Sunnydale and Buffy realized that he had gained a soul for her, I think she was more surprised then she'd really ever been in her entire life.

But once Spike adjusted with his soul, he went back to being the one constant in her life. He'd never died in battles, and he'd never left (except for that one time). I think Buffy forgot to remember what she'd first felt when she found out that Spike had a soul. She didn't treat him that great in "Get It Done," in fact, I thought she was an incredible b*tch who had once more began to take him for granted and took out her anger on him.

I don't think she fully grasped what it meant for Spike to have a soul until that final scene in "Chosen," when he was about to die and their hands touched. Buffy's very much in disbelief that Spike, the one constant, the one thing's that (mostly) stayed the same, is about to die. Maybe it's just me, but that realization for her and the beauty of that scene always makes me cry whenever I watch it. (I know, wimpy.)

OMG i absolutely love your posts! :D
I may have said this before but on this subject I can't be all that objective. At the very least Buffy can't be lying when she says I love you to Spike. I honestly felt that Spuffy ended up in a place of emotional honesty, it just wouldn't make narrative sense if Buffy lied, even if it were a beautiful lie.

She didn't treat him that great in "Get It Done," in fact, I thought she was an incredible b*tch who had once more began to take him for granted and took out her anger on him.

I see where you're coming from and many would agree but I also understand the pressure Buffy was under. She had two individuals who were immensely powerful and they were holding back. This said, I would agree that Buffy was a little harsh.

re: Get it Done - some things just need to be said!
Yeah, but let me just say that I don't understand how can someone not believe Buffy loved Spike in season 7. Just look at these two. It's obvious! How could she not love him? Did you watch season 7??
Fortunately, these things are subjective as different people have different ideas regarding what constitutes "love"...

I think it all depends on how you choose to see and interpret what the actors, writers, and more importantly, Joss, give us and show us.

Hey sweetie. I'm not trying to say that any of these points are invalid, but I'm still not convinced that Buffy in fact was in love with Spike. Like I said before IMO Buffy loved Spike, but was not IN love with Spike. I think she was comfortable with him, trusted him, loved him for everything he'd done for her...But she wasn't gut-wrenchingly-cry-your-eyes-out-oh-god-make-the-pain-stop, in love with him. Remember her reaction to Angel when he was going to dust himself in Amends? She was histerical. Her reaction to Spike dying was (being a Spuffy fan) less than satisfying. And she didn't seem to look back once. I think she may have been telling him what he wanted to hear when he needed it most. Everybody interpets Spuffy differently. No one persons views are going to be the same as the next...The person who posts following me is probably going to tell me I'm a raving lunatic and that I haven't the slightest CLUE what I'm talking about. That's what makes the boards so much fun! 😉

That's what I'm here to do, hun. 😉

I don't think she was, per se, "gut-wrenchingly" in love with him, but I most definitely think that she was in love with him.

Remember her reaction to Angel when he was going to dust himself in Amends? She was histerical. Her reaction to Spike dying was (being a Spuffy fan) less than satisfying. And she didn't seem to look back once. I think she may have been telling him what he wanted to hear when he needed it most.

Well, that was then. Buffy and Angel were in their own little fairytale land, and Buffy was still a teenager then. At that point in time they put their relationship above all else and were incredibly selfish. Of course, when you're a teenager, you're going to be hysterical if you boyfriend or the person who you think is the love of your life is about to kill himself.

Buffy's grown very far and has matured so vastly that she no longer reacts hysterically. I'm sure that perhaps later she broke down in the little yellow school bus, but I think the shock of that moment, the shock of just losing Spike was too much for her to comprehend. With Angel, she had time to process it, but with Spike, she didn't. Like I said, he'd always survived the battles before, and I think he was the last person she expected to lose.

Re:

But it's no fun unless you actually TELL me I'm a raving lunatic! 😉
Okay, yes I agree that Spike was constant from S2 until the final battle, he fought for her when nobody else would, he suffered the slings and arrows of the scoobies, and he played quite well at being her puppet for a good while...
And yes, Buffy was a bubble-gummer when she fell in love with Angel. It was her first love...very traumatic, lala. BUT. I do not believe a person ever changes when it comes to having their heart broken. Anyone who was forced to watch the one they loved die would be devastated, teenager or not. And it very well could have been shock, and maybe (if we weren't talking about a fictional character here) later on down the road she did break down and cry. But thanks to the close of he series we'll never know. 😉
I think throughout the series Buffy was very hot and cold toward Spike. She wanted him, she needed him...She may have loved him...BUT there's a fine line between love and in love....And I just don't believe that that line was ever crossed.

So now ya hate me doncha? 😉

Preach sister! I think Spike and Buffy's relationship in season 7was, at times, beautiful. She loved him, alot, but I do not think she was in love with him. If she was I don't for a second believe she would have kissed and basked in Angelness or made him promises of a possible tomorrow where they are together. If Buffy was truly in love she would never had done that.

You only have to check out Buffy's reactions to each death.

Angel died = she cried her eyes out and ran away

Spike died = She smiled

Obviously I'm not saying that she was happy he died, because of course she wasn't, but do you seriously think that if Angel had just died in there she would be smiling?

I know that if the one I loved had just died I would be in tears, whether I had just saved the world or not.

Those are different maturity levels and different season/times.

Oh, don't be daft, that was writers convenience. Chosen needed a happy ending. If that was ANY other episode, Xander would be suicidal, Andrew would be a wreck, and Buffy would go catatonic.

Andrew would be a wreck. Bahaha.
Killing someone you love and someone dying for a greater good is completely different.

The reason she smiled is because she knew right then and there that everything Spike did was sincere and wasn't the chip.

I'm not being 'daft'.

I wouldn't care what I had just done, if the one I loved just died I would not be smiling. Like I said, Buffy would not be smiling if it was Angel.

It's a 'convenience' for you to just say it was handy for the writers.

I see this argument paraded around all the time, and I really don't get it. According to you, Buffy would have reacted more strongly if she felt romantic love for Spike, instead of platonic love? Why, because romantic love is so superior to the other kinds of love? In a series celebrating, above all, the platonic love between Buffy's "adopted" family? Mmmmmmmmmmkay.

I think she was happy and proud and willing to move on, rather than depressed and mourning, because... that's basically what Spike encouraged her to be, in that same scene. (Flatly refusing her frantic suggestion that "he'd done enough, he could still...", letting her off the hook with the "No you don't", and, in the shooting script, further emphasizing the "off the hook" aspect with "It's your world up there! Now go!") And also, yeah, plot convenience (since Xander wasn't sobbing over Anya, either), and a considerably more mature Buffy than the teenage version.

I can buy into both interpretations, depending on whom I'm debating with or which fanfic I'm reading at the time, but the "in love" interpretation paints Buffy's character in a better light, gives the viewer more room to play with the symbolism behind the flaming handclasp ("a nice comment on their relationship", Joss called it), and gives more credence to the "Spike/Buffy Love Theme" by Robert Duncan playing at the time. 😉

He 'let her off the hook'? Wow that sounds like true love.

Buffy was ready to move on? He had only just died and she was ok with it?

Lmao yeah Spike always encouraged her to be happy, haha yeah.

Spike was about to die. What was she suppose to say? 'Ah well gotta go'?

I would have told him I loved him to give him peace.
