Did Buffy Really Love Angel?

(Since there has been so much discussion about what exactly Buffy meant when she told Spike that she loved him at the end of Season 7, and as far as I can recall, this is a subject that has never been specifically addressed, I just thought that I would toss it out for discussion)

My answer would be that, yes, Buffy did love Angel, to the very bottom of her heart. He was most likely her first love, and certainly her first SERIOUS love, and as such she would always love him, even if he were to someday become a super powered villain and try to kill all of her friends and destroy the world. First loves never leave us, and quite often they become more idealized, intense, and perfect the older that we get. Or at least we remember them as such.

Angel is Buffy's first love, the idealized, dark, mysterious stranger with a tragic past, as well as the repentant sinner trying desperately to come to grips with, get past, and somehow atone for all of his past sins. To top all of that, he tells her that, despite all of the women who he has known throughout his life, she is the forst one who he has actually loved, and has loved her from the moment that he first laid eyes on her.

What 16 (not 15) year old girl could resist a story like that?

Is this thread even neccessary? for me it's obvious that Buffy loved Angel and not Spike and I just..I can't with this thread.

What I always found most tragic about Bangel was that if she had just put a paper bag over her head during the deed or something, they could probably have made it work.

Oh yeah, and the part where he went evil and she had to send him to hell. That too.
 
Yeah she did/still does, she just learned to be more independent and not to need him around constantly. I think people read too much into Buffy telling Angel to go back to LA and that she already had a Champion.
 
You know what, I can't with this thread because a.) been there and done that and have the 'splodey head to prove it, b.) who's to say that buffy can't love BOTH spike and angel differently to the way she the other, and c.) anything i say in defense of my ship is just going to be torn down, so really there's no point.

Everyone to their own and I'll happy go back to the "back steps" where I'm safe, warm, and loved. 🙂

Absolutely. I can see how you can argue that she moved on and love someone else later on, but I cannot see how Buffy could possibly have not loved Angel.

Oh, I'm not saying that she didn't love Angel. Of course she loved him, as he was her first big epic love and they share so much history. I'm just saying, it's possible for her to have another big love and to love someone else as well. :)

Oh, I'm not saying she didn't love Angel, at all. Of course she loved him, he was her "first big epic love" and they share so much history between the two of them. But, I'm also saying that it's very possible that she can have another "big love" in her life that can mean just as much, in a very different sort of way. 🙂

If it's considered the norm to open a thread about weather or not Buffy loved Spike when she so obviously did, why can't this thread be viewed as the same?

Buffy loves Angel. Always will. He's her first love, and that lasts forever. It's died out over time but it will always be there. Always.

But, I believe, Buffy's love for Angel stemmed from a fantasy. She loves bits and pieces of him but not all of him. She never really accepted or even acknowledged certain parts of him. In my opinion.

She thought (and possibly still thinks) she did, but nope, she didn't love him. Immature hormonal crushyness on her side, obsession spawned by depression on his. I don't see where that's supposed to be love, it's just the bad ol' romantic delusion at work once more.

OF COURSE! She loved, loves and will love him. There's no doubt about this and I'm not saying this because I'm a fanatic Bangel..LOL

I seriously can't understand why people say this love is immature...they got through anything, made enormous sacrifices...they were everything to each other from a fresh start, a new hope..to the tie in a real world. Only a crush? I'm seriously stunned by this...even the most Spuffy out there would admit it was love. Oh well..can't make everybody see the light 😉
 
I think she did. But it was young love. It was immature. Angel loving Buffy is a more murky subject for me. I guess I think they loved each other, but not really. And I definitely think she loved him more than he loved her.

Kidding aside, yes. Buffy did love Angel and I think a part of her always will.

Touché. But I would like to say that if I thought Buffy was in love with Spike I would say that. The show just didn't convince me that was the case. I don't say it to be spiteful. I just wanted to point that out.

Simply declaring it to be a no-brainer doesn't make it a no-brainer. In fact, it makes it even less likely that she loved him.

Agreed TaylorSwift. That's the very definition of a no brainer. Something so simple and obvious it requires no explanation or thought.
Buffy most definitely, without any doubt, absolutely lover Angel, and that love has served a very important, even vital, service in her life. Without first love, there can never be second love, or third, or fifth, or fiftieth love. First love is the foundation on which we build every relationship for the rest of our lives. But you can't stop with just a foundation.
