Did Buffy Really Love Angel?

Hmm. Why do you think that?

Because I don't see it.

Well, I do think Angel loved Buffy because he did get a moment of true happiness with her, but I felt like he moved on from her later in his own show when he started to grow feelings for Cordelia. And I felt like Buffy couldn't move on from him at all, even when she was with Spike.

Well, I do think Angel loved Buffy because he did get a moment of true happiness with her,

This is not an argument about whether or not Angel actually loved Buffy, because I'm sure that he did, even if not to the degree that she loved him, but we have to consider something else here. I got the definite impression that, ever since he permanently left Darla, Angel had been living celibate. If that's true, it brings a whole new meaning to what Xander referred to as Buffy "giving him a happy." Angel's "moment of perfect happiness" was, no doubt enhanced by the release of all of that frustration. Without that, Angel and Buffy might have fit into that "99.99999 infinitum" that the rest of the couples on earth had to settle for. Wouldn't it be ironic if it was a one shot deal, never to be repeated, and they just never knew. (Remember, when he lost his soul in Season 4, it was the result of a magic spell, regardless of who he fantasied about, not the actual act)

I really don't agree.

Angel didn't loved Buffy because he got moment of true happines with her, he got moment of true happines with her because he loved her. Yes, Angel moved on, but so did Buffy, they've both managed to fall in love with different people, but they never got rid of those moments together. And they shouldn't. I really don't agree Buffy didn't moved on. She did. At the time she was happy with Riley, and Spike made her... kind of happy. Free, when she needed it (was it good for her is a different subject). It's like you're saying Angel forgot about Buffy and moved on, but Buffy didn't.. I really can't agree on that.

Well, I meant that part of his love for her was proven when he got the moment of true happiness. But it's healthy to disagree and I still love you :).

I want to start by saying that I have never once gotten into a Bangel vs. Spuffy debate, and I never intend to. It's not that I don't have my preferences, or that I don't have opinions...of course I do. Simply put, I just don't feel the need to juxtapose Buffy and Angel's relationship with Buffy and Spike's. I don't think it's necessary. Bangel can speak for itself, and I feel that merely comparing it to a different relationship Buffy had isn't doing it justice. This thread treads a little close for comfort to the Bangel/Spuffy arguments I try to avoid...but it also gives me a chance to talk about Bangel so I'll do it.

I CANNOT understand when people call their relationship immature. Physically, I don't understand it. The only way I could is if the person saying it knew absolutely nothing about the show, the characters, the plot, and had only seen clips of Buffy and Angel kissing and saying dramatic things. That really is ALL you'd have to see or pay attention to in order to come up with the belief that their relationship was immature. Now, of course we all do what I call "selective viewing," especially where 'ships are concerned. We as viewers see what we want to see, and ignore what we don't. But Buffy and Angel both made decisions within the course of their relationship and beyond that cannot easily be ignored, and clearly demonstrate their maturity.

I know people in immature relationships. Log onto Facebook any given day and you'll see it, too. Immature relationships are selfish: self-serving, self-centered, self-motivated and self-oriented. The only thing that matters is their love!! They're gonna be 2gether 4ever!! There is nothing bigger or more important than THEIR RELATIONSHIP and they often make sure everyone knows it. (There are many other aspects to an immature relationship, of course...for the sake of making this post shorter than a novel, this is the one I'll focus on.)

Buffy and Angel are not like that. Sure, they wish for a future together, very much. But scenes like the one in the graveyard (forget which episode) where Angel tells Buffy that vampires can't have children, those don't speak to me as either one of them fooling themselves. They hope to be together, but they both know there are things more important than being together...and that is NOT immature.

The immature couples I know would NOT make the sacrifices that Buffy and Angel have made. They would not choose the world over the off-chance their relationship could work. The most obvious example is Buffy killing Angel. (By the way, I don't think the Whistler would hand Buffy an enormous ceremonial sword if the portal would just need a couple drops of his blood. It was understood that ALL of Angel's blood would need to be taken and Buffy wasn't acting irrationally...she simply understood that.) Next, when Angel comes back from hell, they attempt to have a sexless relationship...which, while clearly not going to work, is a mature decision. Next, Angel leaves town...MATURE decision, and not one someone in an immature relationship would make. He (and Buffy too, given time) understood that their were bigger things than themselves, that they would hold each other back in the long run, and that ultimately doing what was right for themselves meant doing what was right for the world. And finally, Angel choosing to be a tormented vampire rather than a happy human with Buffy, and choosing to be the sole bearer of the memories they shared...someone in an immature relationship would not do this. Buffy and Angel acted selflessly time and time again. They put their love aside to do what was right, which is an excessively mature thing to do. Their relationship was IN high school, but it was never OF high school.

I do understand that the writers tended to push this immatureness onto the viewers. But I think it's safe to say that Spike and Buffy's relationship deserves (and requires) a closer look, right? Beyond what happened S6, beyond their past and beyond what was on the surface...well, so does Buffy and Angel's. When Angel finds Buffy's notebook with "Buffy + Angel 4ever!" written on it, I cringe. Because that was a superficial plot device, and not what their relationship was about.

Furthermore, I don't understand how we can call Buffy "innocent" in ANY way at this time in her life. She's seen more death than anyone her age. She has died herself. She holds the fate of the world in her hands. She's HOPEFUL when she's with Angel, but not innocent or jaded or naive. She knows very well that a relationship between a Slayer and a vampire is not an easy one.

I'm also a little confused as to why "first love" is always brought up, and put down, in these discussions. I'm not stupid, I understand that most people fall in love with more than one person. However, I have been in love with exactly one person. I don't know for a fact that over the course of my entire life, I will remain with this person...I hope to, certainly, and I think I will, but I know that life is unpredictable. Still, to suggest that I love him less because he's my first love, and therefore, my "foundation"...that's sort of ridiculous. As it is ridiculous to suggest that I love him MORE because he's my first love. I know it doesn't happen more than it does, but I know many people who fall in love with one person and stay with that person for the majority of their lives. That's not a "foundation," that's a whole house.

.........anyways, to answer the OP's question, yes. Buffy loves Angel.

I'm a Spuffy, but I agree that Bangel isn't immature. I also think the "first love" debate comes into play b/c many believe both can love someone else besides their first love. It doesn't diminish what Buffy/Angel had though (at least for me).

I always found it oddly disturbing when Xander walked in on Buffy and Angel arguing in 'The Zeppo'.

The disturbing part being that that scene is no different from a 'regular' Bangel scene.

Speaking for myself, Buffy and Angel are some of my favorite characters (Buffy being my absolute favorite), and I've seen both shows and I read the comics, lol. 😀 I've seen the beginning and end of their relationship, as well as their entire respective character arcs. I don't feel like I just ignored certain parts of their story when I personally came to the conclusion that they were "immature". We've all got a bit of blindness when it comes to our ships/OTP's, lol, and one could make the argument that pro-Buffy/Angel shippers are also selectively ignoring certain parts. Not that I would make that case, cause I still think it comes down to interpretation and preference.

I *did* actually ship Bangel when I first watched, for the record. On first watch, in the later seasons, I just liked Spike/Buffy more, I guess you would say, but I never *technically* stopped liking/shipping Bangel. They just weren't OTP status for me anymore. I personally didn't stop shipping them until I watched AtS, cause by then, it was way clear to me that Angel had his own narrative outside of Buffy and Sunnydale. By then, to me, it felt like Bangel as it existed in Seasons 1-3 of BtVS (and the occasional OOC crossover 🙄 😛) *was* "immature" and it *was* a bit self-absorbed. He had so much more to him as a character, and so much more to grow as a Champion. The Bangel storyline just didn't cut it for me anymore as a mature stage in Angel's (un)life.

I agree that they ultimately made mature decisions. Deciding to end it so that Buffy could have a *chance* at a normal life (though we all know how that turned out 😛), Buffy putting aside her love and killing Angelus in Becoming Pt 2, etc. was plenty mature. But I also can't see past the fact that (and most of my conclusions came from Season 3) Buffy hid Angel from the Scoobies when he first came back when they of all people(with the death of Jenny Calendar, Giles being tortured, etc.) deserved to know. I can't see past the fact that Buffy put aside all her principles as the Slayer and set out to murder Faith in cold blood for Angel. I also can't see past the fact that Angel initially chose to leave Buffy after discussing it with her mother, and not Buffy herself until *after* he made the decision. Those aren't mature choices, not to me. There are underlying circumstances for each, obviously, and they worked out in the end I guess, but those decisions in and of themselves say a lot about the characters and their relationship. It says (to me) that they were not mature.

I completly agree with you. I hate seeing people calling them immature, because like you pointed out, there are some really immature relathionship out there today with girls saying 'i love you' after one day, or after braking up leaving posts like 'I feel like dying' and then they find new boyfriend in couple of hours. There's nothing immature Buffy and Angel, and I think that's a big insult to every couple out there Buffy's age.. I know quite few people who are together for a long, long time.

Would you say most people are calling them immature just because of her age though? There's a lot of "they were so high school" comments, yeah, so I understand frustration at that...but I think a lot of people also judge based on what actually happened. And sometimes they were a bit over the top...like with the scene in the Zeppo. It's the writers intentionally poking fun at themselves and at their characters for being melodramatic. 😀 I thought that writers' self-awareness of that was the humorous element in it, lol. And the "cover your heart with my own" or whatever scene. Self-conscious over the top-ness. 😀 You can see why some people could draw the conclusion that they were not only immature, but melodramatic in a "high school" way.

You see, I call that good writing and fitting into her/his character.

Maybe Buffy is different from all the other High School kids, she has to hold the world on the palm of her hand. But she's still a High Schooler. She's a girl in High School. She's susposed to be dramatic, and wild, and get angry at stupid things, and yell at people for no reason. She's susposed to belive that forever means forever, and that people treat you well if you treat them well, and that happiness is around every corner. She's susposed to belive that she'll stay with the man she loves at the point forever, and she's susposed to say cheesy lines about love and have stupid fights. With all things considered, she's just a 17 year old girl.. but that doesn't mean she doesn't know how to love well, or to love better and not as selfish as some people we call mature only because they're older.

However, Buffy did not remain as a 17 year old girl. She became a young adult. And from what I have seen and read, the nature of her relationship with Angel never really . . . changed. Despite the fact that they continued to love one another, I never saw any viable reason to continue their relationship. Were they supposed to regard each other in the same manner as they did during the series' early seasons, despite Buffy's continuing maturity? Are we really supposed to regard that kind of romance as the ultimate kind? I hope not.

Buffy kept her relationship with Spike a secret from the Scoobies. She knew it wasn't something they would be happy about and she was ashamed of it.

Spike continuing a sexual relationship with Buffy knowing that its destroying her emotionally and putting strain on her friendships.

Buffy saying that she wouldn't stop Spike from killing Wood.

They way Buffy talked down to Spike and used him as a punching bag for so long.

I find those things immature. The bottom line is it comes down to interpretation and preference.

Oh, I agree that it fits her character. I just don't agree that it makes a case against immaturity in the Buffy/Angel relationship. I believe all love to some degree is selfish, but in Buffy and Angel's case, there were quite a few instances where the selfishness was more than I personally could accept. A lot of the decisions they both made convinced me they were immature, not just Buffy's personality. Maybe 'mature/immature' aren't the best words to use to illustrate my point...I guess 'responsible' and 'irresponsible' are more accurate?

You see, I don't see it. I don't see those 'irresponsible moments' that pass some serious line.
I think it could be said that one of the misconceptions of the "immature" argument toward Bangel is that some believe others think the relationship was immature from beginning to end. For me, I don't think Bangel was immature in the beginning. However, like prophecygrrl said, there were a lot of things (especially in s3) that made me feel like the relationship became immature. Over time, based on how both characters grew in their maturity, their relationship did begin to feel immature in comparison to other relationships. That's just the feeling I get anyways, and it has nothing to do with first love or anything. 🙂

I don't think Spuffy could be counted as mature all the time either. But I and many other Spuffies still ship them because they grew from that- as friends, ambiguous lovers, whatever you consider them. They grew together. I don't think that's the same case for Bangel, which is why I take issue with their immaturity/irresponsibility more than I do Spuffy.

Yes, all of these are immature. Notice how all of these are pre-S7, though? And how I keep saying that S6 Spuffy was very, very similar to that other ship, just with added realism and a role reversal? 😉

Buffy saying that she wouldn't stop Spike from killing Wood.
And here's where you lost me. I find that this actually it shows how much Buffy has grown and matured within seven years, it clearly was one of her most empowering moments for me. Why on earth should she be bothered to interfere if Spike were to kill Wood? Why should he deserve special protection if he ambushes him again? She has more important things on her hand than wasting time playing nanny for one murderously vengeful guy.

Spike had every fricking right to kill Wood then and there in the garage (and actually was noble enough to give him a pass that one time, "on account of I killed his mum"), I really don't get why anyone would think it were a problem if he just offed the guy on a repeat attempt? ???

I read a Buffy non-fiction book that had a whole chapter spelling out the similarities between Spuffy season 6 and Bangel. I wish I remembered which one it was...
There's no question that Buffy loved Angel, and that a part of her will always love him.

But as far as I'm concerned their relationship ended in S3. They're not suited to each other anymore (in so much as they were ever suited to one another.) The post-S3 moments when they're together (Forever, End of Days, Chosen), well, I see that as them being in love with the idea of each other.

I'm not sure I can explain too well but for Buffy he was her first love. Idealistic, romantic, epic, sweeping... all those *cough*cheesy*cough* Mills and Boon-esque words. That's bound to stick with her. For Angel she was the first person he'd loved/been with in a century - so that's got to mean something.

But after they've both moved on, whenever they come together I think they're swept up in a remembrance of those feelings, and not the actual feelings themselves. They're in love with the idea of what they used to have, and not what they actually have. The people they are now are most definitely not suited to one another. They don't have anything in common anymore. Some part of her will always love him, and vice versa, but neither is what the other needs anymore.

I try to picture the off-screen scene of Buffy going to meet up with Angel in S6 and my mind brings forth a hug and a slew of awkward silences.

Besides, Buffy needs someone a little shorter, a little skinnier, a little blonder... [/off topic] 😛

Anyway. Not sure if this makes sense but thought I might as well weigh in.

Besides, Buffy needs someone a little shorter, a little skinnier, a little blonder... [/off topic] 😛

Anyway. Not sure if this makes sense but thought I might as well weigh in.

Plus, you know, the whole jailbait thing.
