Question Did Buffy REALLY love Spike?

She was in love with him. I don't have any doubt when it comes to this topic. And I was convinced of this since season 6 anyway 😛.

I could express my opinion in a long post for explaining why, but English isn't my maternal language, I'm French, so it's a little bit hard 😱

I've read a lot of differents opinions and differents point of views on this question, in French, in English, and on differents forums, and all what I can say is : I think it came from a different definition/ vision of love.

To me, Spuffy and Bangel both happened in Buffy's life at differents periods ; her way of loving and expressing love was different. She grew, she became different after all what happened to her since season 5 more especially ; she became less and less expressive because of her past, because she became a woman, an adult, and she discovered life. Real Life. It's not always easy, she has responsabilities, she lost people she loves, she has a lot of bills, she needs to find a job, she takes care of a lot of potentials... I mean, she faces reality in the hardest way possible. Those elements change her. Because now, after the death of her mother, after her resurrection, she sees life differently, and she knows how much life can be hard. Her needs and her expectations change, including at a romantic level.

So, the biggest mistake done by most of the fans is when they try to compare these two kind of love, because we never love the same way at 16 and at 22. And she'll never be able to love again in the same way than she loved in the first three seasons. It has nothing to do with Angel, it has to do with who she is. It could be Spike, it could be Angel, Riley, Parker or Andrew, she'll never love with the same attitudes and emotional demonstrations than during the first three seasons. Simply because of who she is NOW. And that's why I think that her relationship with Angel can't work at the end of the show, but it's not the right topic for discussing about it.

So, concerning the Buffy & Spike, I'm convinced like... 200000 % that she loves him and that she's in love with him. Because of the way she acts around him. Because of all the proofs of love she gives. She doesn't need to say it ; the viewer has to feel it and to see it. And there, it depends of what you think when it comes to the "real love" topic. To me, it's very simple, love is based on a level of reality. When you see the person you love as she/he is, when you're able to say "I love you" in despite of all the worst and the best you have seen of this person, to me, this is the most beautiful and powerful thing ever. Because, let's face it, we all expect to be accepted and loved for who we are. And not being loved for an image of who we are. We have to be able to be ourself, in the best as in the worst, being comfortable with this idea.

What I see on the Buffy & Spike relationship is a high level of trust and comprehension. They have the greatest dynamic and chemistry I ever seen on TV, they're able to have an argument, but they're also able to fight side by side and loving each other. That's real life ; a relationship doesn't have to be only about romance. Romance is just a huge part of it, but it doesn't work without other elements. We never, never have to forget those importants elements which are trust, communication, ability to have an argument on the dumbest thing ever (as Buffy was saying in End of Days : "You're a dop" 😛 Aren't they cute ? 😛 ), comprehension, support, faith in each other...

And when I see how Buffy is when she's with Spike, I just see... love, love, love ! I won't talk about season 6 because it was more complex, but season 7 was A LOT clearer on this topic. Briefly, my opinion is : the season 6 was the basis of her feelings for him. Season 7 was a development on a better emotional context.

Buffy is all about Spike in season 7. She helps him, she protects him, she believes in him, she trusts him (and almost only him), she defends him against everybody, she takes care of him, and yeah, she's in love with him... Giles sees this connection between them, and even the least concerned see it : the potentials, Wood, Faith...
They're together all the time and side by side. They're jealous and possessive when they see someone too close. To me, there is an emotional engagement. Unspoken, but there. TOTALLY there.

So yeah, to me, Buffy was in love with him. She wasn't ready for saying it (look at her past, she had been hurt a lot of times), she had a lot of insecurities, but she *feels* it and she means it. All what she needed was time. But all the season 7 scream that she loves him. It's in their looks, in their gestures, their ways of acting around each other, their dynamic... Personnaly, one of my favorite Spuffy moment in season 7 is the moment at the beggining of First date, when they try to explain to Giles for the chip.

08-11-14.jpg

Side by side, additional, with the exchange of a lot of looks and their lovely ways of acting with each other... I just find it beautiful, touching and real, you know ? You just have to feel it. Full of love. It's as powerful as the "I love you" scene to me.

When a couple needs to be always all about romance and needs to say "I love you" an hundred times for convincing the viewers of this fact, the interest is totally gone, and I don't feel it... It sounds more superficial, and at the end, these words and their romantic scenes lose their meaning. When love is there, words are not necessary. One time is enough to a powerful meaning. We can see the rest on the attitudes and ways of being with each other, even in the most mundane moments.

And someone on this topic (I don't remember who, sorry) has said something really interesting : when she discusses with Angel, she tells to him that her relationship with Spike is not his business. And she defends Spike, she admits in part how she feels about him when she said that he's in her heart. And when we look at her discussion with Spike, it's different. She tries to minimize the meaning of her kiss with Angel. And the point is : she feels like if she has to justify it. She NEEDS to justify it. It seems natural. This ? It's a thing you do with the person you love...

For the "cookie" issue, I don't think that Buffy really sees her future. She just lives on the moment (and she still has an idealization issue of her first love that she needs to fix). But when she came back to Spike's arms, when she chose him as her Champion, when she chose to spend her last moments with him, and probably wants making deeper her relationship with him after the battle, all her looking ahead are with Spike.

Look at what she said in End of days when they speak about their feelings : "Maybe when...". Maybe when the battle will be passed ? One thing is sure, the emotional engagement was there since a long time ago. And you don't act like this when you don't see yourself with this person.

Concerning the "No, you don't", I don't have a definitive opinion about it. Sometimes, I think he believed her, but wanted make her leave the hellmouth ; wanted see her living her life. In the shooting script, we have this :

SPIKE
No you don't. But thanks for saying it.

A big quake rocks them. Spike pushes her away.

SPIKE (cont'd)
It's your world up there. Now GO!

"It's your world up there". He gives her the life she always wanted and deserved.

And sometimes, I think he doesn't believed her, because of his insecurities. Both of these theories are okay with me, because both of these theories are in character from Spike POV. But one thing I'm sure of, he was wrong. I strongly disagree with those who think that he said it because it was a fact... I don't even understand it for being honest. Buffy loves him, if he doesn't believe it, it has nothing to do with how she feels. She loves him and she's proud of him.

I want also to react to the previous posts : was she ready to die with him ? Personnaly, I see it like this : Buffy is a responsible person. She has a sister, she has friends, and she doesn't want to make them suffer, because she knows they need her, not as a Slayer but as a loved person. And I don't think she'll be able to *choose* to die, because of them. But she loves Spike, and if he hadn't push her to go, to live her life as she deserved it, she probably would have stayed too long (because of hesitation, because she didn't want to leave him...) for staying alive. That's how I see it.

***
So yeah, Buffy was and is in love with Spike. NO. DOUBT.

These two kids love each other and are made for each other, they just have to realize it. But when two persons are on the same level, they're generally as much stupid as each other 😛

It was a little bit longer than I was expected (I love my ship ♥ ), sorry for my bad English 😱

I have no words...
Heck, I was going to assail you all with my rhetorical talents and razor sharp wit about hoe Buffy absolutely DID love Spike, whether she was able to convince him of the fact or not, but anything that I could say after Miss Kitty's post up above would sound like a 5th grade essay by comparison. So I'll just ask a simple question.

Buffy told Angel at the end of Season 2 that she loved him, and there has never been any question as to exactly what she meant. She was IN LOVE WITH HIM. No question, no debate, no argument. No doubt whatsoever. So why is it that the Spuffy shippers have had to defend Buffy's exact same words, under very similar circumstances (i e, she was, as far as she knew at the time, assuring him of her true feelings in the final moments of his life) from practically the minute that the words left her mouth up until now?

Z

Because this was the first time she said it. And if those non Spuffies admitted Buffy loved him, they'd have no choice but to admit Spuffy is clearly superior.

It's also cause Angel said "I love you" back where as Spike said "No, you don't." So, if Spike said it, then it must not be true. Please :p
StarSlayer agrees: It's also cause Angel said "I love you" back where as Spike said "No, you don't." So, if Spike said it, then it must not be true. Please

That's a valid answer to the question if we were asking how Angel or Spike felt. However, we're asking why Buffy's truthfulness is accepted without question by all fans when speaking to Angel, but analyzed, qualified, questioned, and outright denied by so many when she says it to Spike. Whether either or both men believed her is, at that moment, irrelevant to the question. However, I've never heard the argument "Nothin' says lovin' like a sword through the chest" before.

^Oh, I completely agree, don't get me wrong. 🙂 I was just saying that some people say the reason Buffy didn't love Spike is because of how Spike responded, which was different than how Angel responded. And I totally disagree with that because, as you said, it's really irrelevant to question of what Buffy herself felt. 🙂

We can fight about this till kingdom come... but after Buffy kills Angel, she completely falls to pieces, leaves Sunnydale, takes on a secret identity etc. When Spike dies, she looks sad for a second and continues fighting. Granted, the series ends so we aren't there to witness her mourning for anyone, but still she looks kinda happy at the end of "Chosen". I haven't read much of the comics yet, but as far as I know she doesn't even go looking for Spike after he comes back. Doesn't really spell "love" in my book either...

17 year old Buffy had had no experience losing loved ones. 21 year old Buffy, unfortunately, had. She could cope better. And that look wasn't happiness, it was pride. The last word that she spoke in the series was "Spike." She was PROUD of him.

Buffy wasn't all that sad because Spike died a champion. He sacrificed his own life to save the world and to save her. She was proud of him, proud of them man he had become. You can't compare Buffy reaction to Angel's death to her reaction to Spike's because there were so many different factors in play.

Yeah, we totally could, lol! She looks happy at the end of Chosen because she just changed the world. There's no longer one slayer, but hundreds of potential slayers. As I mentioned above, I believe Spike wanted her to keep fighting and go back to the world. He didn't want her to remain sad because although they closed the hellmouth, there still was work that needed to be done, and she knew it. She was also a totally different person when Spike died as opposed to when Angel died. If we're going into the comics, I don't think Buffy knew that Spike was alive, which is why she didn't go looking for him. Yet, I think that's still being developed in the comics.

But Buffy was 17 when she killed Angel. Then five years later, she would let Dawn die if it meant saving the world. She simply grew up in those years. If Angel had been the one to die in Chosen, I think her small smile at the end still would have been in place.

True! Also- great banner! Sad Buffy. :( *tear*
Buffy wasn't supposed to end her own show in tears and pain ; it was supposed to be a message of hope for her and for her friends. Xander doesn't cry after the death of Anya, do you consider that he doesn't love her ? (and for the comics thing, we know that he has done his mourning during months after that, away from his friends). At this point, their reaction a few minutes after their the battle doesn't have to be counted in this way.

I think Joss had tried to concile the impact of Spike's death on Buffy, and the end of his show. The message of hope was very important at this point. But really, you can't compare her reaction to the one she had in season 2 with Angel. Spike was the closest person to Buffy. Remember : he is in her heart, she's totally all about him during season 7, her last words of the show are "I love you... Spike", and when she had to choose between Spike and Angel, she chose Spike. The thing at the end of Chosen is : she was proud of him, and she just won the hardest fight of her life. Spike wanted to see her having the life she always wanted. He chose his death, dying like an hero. It was his wish. On the moment, he was accomplished. It wasn't the case of Angel, because she had to kill him by the time of season 2. The context was different. Even emotionaly.

The impact of his death comes probably later. For sure. I really don't think that she was all "It's okay, he's dead" after Chosen. We have to keep in mind that she had choose to spend her last moments on earth with Spike. Not her best friends, not her sister. SPIKE. This moment speaks of himself.
Buffy was panicked when she realized that Spike wasn't gonna come with her. We can see tears in her eyes, and she left him a long moment after everybody, and because he has a lot insisted.

Issues between the end of season 2 and the end of season 7 were completely different. Not even comparable.

I accept that. And because this message is too short, I accept what everyone else said as well. Buffy really loved Spike more than anyone else, except Angel. 🙂

Why is it always a competition over who Buffy loved more?

Quoting from a meta by the_royal_anna:

If I started drawing a comparison of the Buffy/Angel and the Buffy/Spike relationships, I’d go on forever, but in all honesty, I don’t know that there’s anything to be gained by it. I’ve seen so many discussions of which of the two Buffy loved more, but I don’t know that we love in amounts. We love in ways.

😕 If you want to go on this direction, I can easily say that I disagree.

But I think the same way than Xaphania and the meta of the_royal_anna. We don't love in quantity, we love in ways. Buffy wasn't the same girl at 16 and at 22. Like I was saying on my first post, Buffy will never love again the same way she loved in seasons 1-3. Because she's different. It could be Spike, Angel, Riley or Andrew, she'll never be that much demonstrative again.

Yet, if we want to talk in amounts, it can just go back to the same argument in Chosen. Buffy chose to spend her last few nights with Spike, although Angel was in town and was willing to stay. Hmmm, lol 🙂

As much as I do believe that without doubt, there was another quite valid reason for Buffy to get Angel out of town as quickly as possible. As good a fighter as Angel is, and as much she needed more fighters at that time, I'm quite certain that Buffy was totally aware of the fact that two fighters like Spike and Angel under the same roof, given the past history that they shared, would have been a total disaster, resulting in a demolished house and two badly injured, if not dusted, vampires, neither one of ant use whatsoever in the coming battle. For the same reason that you don't put two pit bulldogs in a pen together and expect peace and tranquility, you don't put Angel and Spike together, especially with Buffy in the near vicinity. The only reason that it worked in Season 5 of "Angel" the next season is that Spike had several weeks incorporeal, allowing the two to somehow adjust to each other, after a fashion. As it was, a big fight was practically the first thing (well, second for Spike) on the agenda as soon as Spike became solid once more.

So, Buffy did what any real leader would do. She kept the real Champion and best fighter and sent Number 2 back to LA. Getting to snuggle with Spike those last couple of nights was just icing on the Spuffy cake.

Lol, yes. All those reasons too :D
Yet, if we want to talk in amounts, it can just go back to the same argument in Chosen. Buffy chose to spend her last few nights with Spike, although Angel was in town and was willing to stay. Hmmm, lol 🙂

I think you're reading too much into it. She sent Angel away for the very same reasons that she's told him:

1. "because I (she) can't risk you (him)"
2. "I (she) need(ed) a second front and I need(ed) you (him) to run it."

One can assume (like I do) that she didn't want Angel and Spike to fight over her in the very few days prior the big fight. Even in the eyes of a Bangeler it's clear that it would be more than odd, if she sent Spike away, because Angel was back, willing to stay & she loved him more, yada yada. Whether or not, it wasn't about whom she loved and to what extent - she had the mission to win this fight. Period. She couldn't risk any distractions. Besides, she knew that unlike Angel, Spike had nowhere to go, plus Angel indeed had the sources for the second front if one was needed. Also Spike was more useful by her side than anywhere else. So it was natural to send Angel away.

On the "love in amounts" thing:
Many do argue whether or not we love in ways or in amounts. In my opinion it's a combination of both. Nevertheless, the reason (I believe) the Bangelers always refer to how much more Buffy loved Angel over Spike comes from Buffy herself: "I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life." Whatever your personal view on this is, in Buffyverse they obviously do love in amounts, at least Buffy did. So as long as you don't want to doubt or twist Buffys choice of words, or accuse her of lying, to me it seems she just said that she loved Angel more than anything else in her life. The past form means nothing in the case, because even though this love might be in her past, she says clearly that neither of her future love's will ever come close enough to what she's had with Angel (including her love for Spike). One might insist that though Buffy's line in 'Selfless' was true, it was still before she realized she loved Spike. Well, when I look at Season 8 (though I don't care much about it, but it seems to be quite canon, lol) there's indeed not much left of Spuffy. It was clearly implied she knew he was 'undead' again and didn't care enough to go see him.

Yes, she loved Spike in 'Chosen', but for different reasons, in a different way and not as much as she loved Angel.

You're overlooking the fact that later in the season she admits that she still has a lot to learn about love.

Or did you think she was talking about ACTUAL cookie dough?

Also, there's no objective way with which the quantity of love can be measured. The closest thing to an 'indicator of love' is perhaps a certain hand clasping that led to some really scorching flames...

Lol, good point with your last sentence!

Not so sure about the closest 'indicator of love' there. Sure that's not something closer to a thermometer? 😉 I agree there is no objective way with which to measure the quantity of love - there are, however, as you've demonstrated, a gazillion subjective ones.

Just as an observation, I always find the same things amusing with these discussions/debates. For instance, when a Bangel fan says they don't think Buffy was in love with Spike, we are challenged about calling Buffy a liar because she wouldn't use those words if she didn't mean them. However, some people have actually spent some time suggesting that Buffy was telling porkies when she explained her reasons for asking Angel to return to L.A...right.

I should stop browsing these discussions, they make my head spin!

I don't think she liked to Angel. She said she needed him to run a second front if the First got past her and I believe her. I mean, if it didn't work (and it was a risky plan) they WOULD need a second front.

But lying about that and lying saying "I love you" are two very different things especially since Buffy has trouble saying "I love you." It doesn't come easy to her, it's not like she throws the word around and will say "Oh my god, I love you!" if someone she's around says or does something funny or interesting... she's not that person. Saying Buffy lied to Spike in Chosen is a slap in the character's face. IMO of course.

Buffy wasn't baking in season 1-3. She was eggs, flour, chocolate chips, whatever. But she was so pure and so true and so knew, she hadn't even been made yet. By Innocence, she was just about ready to be mixed, but when Angel turned bad, she didn't let herself love until Spike and she tried to force herself to love Spike in season 7 and she was trying to force herself into the oven, force herself to love which isn't possible. She said "I love you." to try to make herself believe yet she didn't even believe it, she was happy that Spike was dust because she was finally able to stop trying to force herself to love him.

^ I know people are gunna hate that paragraph, but it's my opinion and you guys can't really change that fact that it is my opinion.

I've said this before, she loved the idea of loving again (ie. being able to be with someone) and in Touched I believe she had the idea of love in her mind, she thought she loved Spike and was able to spend the night with him, but I don't feel it was anything more, and neither was what they had in Chosen.

I just can't, I just can not believe that Buffy loves Spike, sorry. :/

What examples of her trying to force herself to love him do you have? I've never heard that and I was just wondering if you could give examples of how it was forced on her part?
I think you're reading too much into it. She sent Angel away for the very same reasons that she's told him:

It's not a question of whether Angel or Spike had a place to go. (Go to another abandoned house if Buffy wanted to be with Angel, but avoid Spike, lol). And yes. Buffy clearly wanted Spike in her fight. She said it numerous times. She also wanted Angel to run the second front. He was a great leader, had the resources, so she knew he would be able to get it done. Now, that's one reason Buffy didn't want Angel by her side, but what's the other? 😉 Angel sensed something was going on between Buffy and Spike, and it threw him off. Some Bangels say that whenever Buffy and Angel are together, they forget the world around them and just want to be with each other. Well, that certainly didn't happen this time. Buffy chose to be with Spike, and that's the bottom-line. 🙂

Yeah, I disagree because I really consider the timing of when Buffy said it and who she said it to, which was Xander. It doesn't prove to me at all that she loved Angel more than Spike. Also, if we're considering the events of s8
you can argue all you want that Buffy loves Angel more (which I don't agree with), but the fact remains is that despite all this "bestest, weirdest, bestest" day malarkey with Angel, Buffy was still day-dreaming about Spike.

They forgot the world around them for a few seconds while they greeted each other with sweet kisses ;)
