did spike serve a purpose in season 5 ???

he had such a massive impact in buffy in the last season but even in the early seasons as well..

what was his purpose in season 5
i know they got him in season 5 as wb said they wanted him in there but he really did not do much did he really.......I was kinda hoping spike has a massive sending of as i loved spike and thought he brought great humor to both tv series.......
 
If I understand correctly, his purpose was to majorly pee me off, and be a useless character, more useless than Lorne...
And also, to use, *way* too many English curse words when he first came back!
He said like...'bloody' twice in every sentance....

Seriously though...I think...had Season 6 gone through, he would've maybe become more useful to the story, and I think that it was kinda hard to get what the writers wanted to get with Spike through one Season, when they were prepared for a Season 6...

yeah maybe u are right....... when i found out that spike was gonna be in angel i really wanted it too be good... out of all the characters i rate spike one if the best
 
See...now...the way they played it out, and premoted Spike on Angel was just...so overwhelming...I expected this *HUGE* impact on the Angelverse...

But instead...it made as big an impact as Larry dying in Graduation Day (Buffy)
 
Maybe he was there to teach you the old life lessons, your enemies will always be around.

I mean he was a fighter, and a breeze of fresh air. Maybe being purposeless was his purpose.

Im with the guy / girl above ...... When i saw that spike would be on angel i really thought he would make a massive impact spiecally with the impact he made in the last ep of buffy.........

i think james marsters /spike really done a awesome job in buffy throught all the seasons and then topping it off in the final season...... he was unreal and i loved him in it......
not in a gay way..... i just thought he really stood out from the rest

james character came to buffy as a hard fighter..... and a ruthless killer....the character then really really moved on over the years and james as a acter must have loved it ...
I remember watching a video with just b4 the last season was going to be aired and james said he could not wait to play spike again beacuse spike had moved on and on.... it was a huge challenge for him as a actor...

my point is on all this......... do u think he felt a bit dissapointed with his time on angel.... like his character when backwards on angel unlike on buffy when his character kept moving forward in my opinion ??????
 
I originally thought he was going to be a waste of time; maybe add confusion for having him there, but as the season progressed, I was glad Spike was on it.

He made not have had a sole "purpose" but he brought about humerous that had died throughout the show -- Season Four was very serious, and depressing, and I think Season Five brought back some of that humer that the show lost when characters like Cordy were removed.

I was, personally, glad he was on it.

I agree that he was better and had a greater impact on Buffy, BUT, great character on Angel.
 
I think Spike played a huge role on Angel, but in relation to the other characters and in defining himself. First off, it was great to see him be a true hero, to see that he could be a champion without Buffy there to impress. I never cared for Spike very much until his move to Angel. Additionally, he provided some characterization for Angel, giving Angel someone to compete with during a time when the big guy was very much mopey. Additionally, he proved to be a very valuable ally when Angel was, as Lindsey put it, "two soldiers down".

I loved Spike in Buffy but borderline HATED him on Angel. He served no purpose but to annoy Angel and in turn annoy me as a viewer. The character just didn't work within the Angel forumla. His accent was just OFF- i didn't realise how horrendous it sounded in the cold settings of Wolfram and Hart. His interactions with Angel were ok, but that's all. A couple of funny lines here and there but his delivery was just terrible b/c of that crummy accent. He NEVER sounded that bad in Buffy. Spike was much more suited to Buffy than to Angel. I just found it tiresome and some of his humour felt misplaced and fell flat. Plus JM couldn't carry off a macho facade after I saw how miniscule he was compared to DB!

So in answer to the question- Spike served no purpose whatsover!
 
I think Spike's character had served as a counterpoint to Angel's character. An example of the kind of souled vampire Angel could have been. For a while, it seemed as if the whole Shanshu prophecy matter was going to play a major role in the series again. Then the latter half of S5 arrived, and Spike was shoved to the background . . . except for that lousy "The Girl in Question" episode.

His presence showed promise early in the season, but in the end, Whedon failed to utilize him. Just as he had failed to properly utilize Fred, and during the last 3 or 4 episodes - Gunn.

I feel the same
SPike did have a presence in the early part of the season but it seemed when the last part of the season came around joss did not have the time orspace for the angel characters never mind spike.......

He did seem much in the background...
I loved spike in buffy
I think he played a mojor role from the beginning, and he was wanted by the fans
Do you think that maybe the actors at Angel did not want him there as well ??? maybe thats pushing it too far.....

I wasjust hoping that as spike played a huge factor in the buffy verse he and angel would come together and play a huge role together in angel. Finish the season off together... 2 vampires....who have been together for centurys...hated each other , fought together, created havoc and helped people as well.....
i thought it was a bit of a let down......
the characters of angel and spike in my view deserved a better sending off for the fans

A lot of people claimed that Angel and Wesley had asked Spike for details on how he got his soul . . . off screen.

Is this true, or just an excuse that the fans may have thought of?
 
I feel that Spike was completely under-utilized on Angel. For one thing once he was corporial, he didn't really belong. At least for me, it was hard to credit that Spike would stay at an evil law firm instead of running off to find Buffy reguardless of the results. After all, by season 7 of Buffy he stayed by her side despite the fact that he was convienced that she didn't love him. Spike was loyal to her; he loved her. Buffy and Dawn were "his family." It seemed odd to me that he didn't leave to find them.

In addition, Spike/William never got to come to grips publically with what it meant to be a man with a soul who was also a vampire. In S7 of Buffy he was to busy supporting the woman he loved for introspection. When I found out Spike would be on Angel, I was waiting to see how he would react to what he was without the pressures of fighting the first/being possessed. I loved the dynamic nature of Spike's character on Buffy. On Angel,Spike didn't get to change anymore.

Spike didn't mesh with the Angel show, I was very excited in the beginning, but over time he felt more and more wrong in its context. I didn't like the way Spike was presented on Angel S5, but then I loath that particular season although I love the characters and the show, so perhaps I'm not the best person to ask.
 
He didn't really stay at Wolfram and Hart. He had his own apartment, he partipated in his own activities, he really was just there to talk to the only people he knew in LA or to help out with some demon bashing.
I thought Spike not going back to Buffy made perfect sense. Think about it, he was a poet as a human and old habits die hard. He'd gotten a very poetic ending in the Battle of the Hellmouth, going out in a very literal blaze of glory. To go back to Buffy as a corporeal demon again would be like a step backward.
I think we did get to see what Spike is like without the motivation/influence/control of the First and/or Buffy. We saw a person willing to fight for what's right but still struggling with being selfish and childish. I think Spike's never been better done than he was on Angel season 5 and the cast and crew should be commeneded for taking a character who was forced on them and making him so enjoyable and integral to the story

To me Spike made the show more humorus. I think that if there had been a Season 6 then we would have seen the relationship between Angel and Spike change. Cause as James Marsters said theres alot of history there. And Spikes character on Angel would have become deeper.
 
I don't think Spike was there long enough to make much of an impact or to serve a purpose. The only thing he did for me was bring back to comedy value which was lacking once Cordy went. I think, as most people have been saying, that if there was a season six we might have seen more from Spike and maybe him serving a better purpose.

He was only there to get Buffy fans who weren't already watching Angel since Buff was ending. I hated that he was going to be on the show until I watched it and saw the writers we're great because they remembered it was Angel's show. I think they learned from their mistake by making BtVS more about Spike than Buffy in the last 2 seasons, because when they did that the ratings kept declining.
If Spike played a bigger part, Angel the show would have fallen apart too. It was nice to have him there though to remind us of the huge legacy of BtVS.
 
I think that the reason was to give Angel competition. To give Angel a reason to fight for the Shanshu, believing that it was his.

But basically, Spike was brought to Angel to draw in the Buffy fans after the series ended. It worked for me. So, they had to think up a reason to justify Spike being in Angel's world, so I think that is why they did it. To help Angel realize things.
