did spike serve a purpose in season 5 ???

Angel and company just by agreeing to work for Wolfram & Hart strayed from their path. They weren't doing good they were actively helping people/demons do evil. Spike may have been there at first because he had no where else to go due to him being linked to the blingbling that killed him, but once he was free of that he knew where he had to be. He had to be there as the one person who wasn't there to help evil. Angel and company was just dense to realize it until a ghost came back and spelled it out for Angel.

I personally don't think he served any purpose in the season, except for maybe the very last ep when he saved that baby, but besides that... I think the creators got bored so they thought they should bring spike back...

In the context of the story Spike was there to make Angel doubt himself, his purpose in life, his status as a hero. That reduces his purpose to 5 episodes (from Destiny to You're Welcome). The rest of the time he was pure comic relief and punching ball for Illyria.

I did like Spike on BtVS but he didn't fit into AI and I found his character development was partly cheapend by making him revert to BtVS S4 Spike most of the time. Him and Angel bickering all the time might be amusing from time to time but I think it belittled both characters since it made Spike look stupid and whiny and Angel arrogant. Something both characters didn't derserve.

To give the writers credit: Their dialogue at the end of Damage was touching and the first real moment of mutual understanding between them. Had their interaction been more like that I would have enjoyed that season more, I guess. Well it's my least fav season anyways, but that would have made it a bit less annoying.
