Did You Cry When Ol' Yeller Died?

This is silly. That's like reading children fairytales and then leaving out the more gory parts. Children can handle more than those people expect, you don't have to protect them from everything.

And seriously - Bambi's mother dying should be the least concern considering Bambi first is a deer and then turns into a stag.


Edit: Wow, I've just seen that the Bambi thing is only a big translation mistake in the German adaption. My bad.

I don't believe in sheltering. I think if my kids can handle Buffy they can handle Old Yeller. Hell, they play worse than that on Disney these days. The last girl I knew that had parents that sheltered her to that degree was still playing with Barbies and sucking her thumb in high school...I vowed then never to do that to my kids. If they have questions I'm honest. I figure if they're old enough to ask they're old enough for the truth...as tactfully as it can be explained of course. That being said, yeah, I cried like a baby...
 
Is it wrong that I read this and my first thought was "I'm not dead yet!!!"? It's all scobby's fault....

Anyway, I think the list is a joke. Many of those aren't children's movies. 😛 That said, yes, I did cry, and no, I won't stop my children from watching it. 😉

I was disapointed when i realised this thread wasn't about you.... ....too harsh? :P
My boys being sad over an animal's death in a movie is among the least worrying things I can think of. I have shed a heap of tears over Artax (his death is no less moving in the original novel), and have no idea how this should be a bad thing.
 
Nope didn't shed a single tear.
I only ever cried a Disney films as a kid.

Never seen Old Yeller, but I probably would cry. I've been crying at movies since I was little.

The mentality of wrapping kids up in cotton wool these days is so annoying. All the PC stuff, not letting them watch sad movies. What is that actually going to achieve other than adults who don't know how to cope with other adults who have seen worse things in their life than a sad movie. I say let them go eat dirt!
 
I haven't seen Old yeller either. Would I cry if I watched it? Probably not but I wouldn't rule it out completely. Too many factors plays a part and with the right build up it can be difficult not to. Not an animal but thanks to my big sister I always get teary when I watch E.T. die. Other than that there's not many deaths that make me teary/cry. Even if it does happen. Sad on the other hand happens a lot. Not like I'm totally without feelings.

As long as kids are surrounded buy (responsible) adults that can help them deal with their emotions I don't think we should shield our kids from too much. Even though some things can wait and don't have to be watched at a very young age.

Old Yeller? Never heard of it actually. I see that horse of The Neverending Story is one? I didn't care about it at all actually. They should have added Brother Bear and My Dog Skip!
 
I remember crying in the 2nd Grade when our teacher read "Charlotte's Web" to us, and to this day I refuse to watch the ending of "Goodbye, My Lady." (That's another one, along with "Ol Yeller" that most of you young 'uns probably have never heard of. Just another reminder that I'm 2 generations separated from most of you.

If it wasn't for Friends I wouldn't have heard of Ol' Yeller either.

You can always do as Phoebe's mom and turn off the TV before the tragic ending. 🙂

Even though I think that most kids can handle these things pretty well if they watch it their parents.
Not that I actually know anything about children...
