They are remaking my Dirty Dancing. 🙁

Hit 1980s film Dirty Dancing is to return to the big screen, a Hollywood film studio has said.

Lionsgate is remaking the 1987 film that starred Jennifer Grey opposite Patrick Swayze.

Kenny Ortega, who choreographed the original, directed Michael Jackson movie This Is It and High School Musical, will direct the remake.

"The opportunity to direct Dirty Dancing is like returning home for me," Ortega told film magazine Variety.

"I am looking forward to assembling a great creative team and an exciting cast to bring Dirty Dancing to the screen for a new generation.

"Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him," he added.

The original romantic movie, which was set in the 1960s, tells the story of a teenage girl who falls in love with her dance teacher while on holiday with her family.

The accompanying soundtrack was a big success and included number one hits such as Time of my Life and Hungry Eyes.

It has since been made into a successful stage show, and after a five-year run in the West End which ended in July, the musical begins a tour of the UK in September.

Grey, 51, who played Baby in the original film, was crowned the winner of US show Dancing with the Stars last year.

Swayze, who played Johnny, died of pancreatic cancer in September 2009 at the age of 57.

Why? Why would you do this. Compared to this I actually don't give a crap about the Buffy remake.

But redo Dirty Dancing? They are going to make it all Step-Up, Honesyesque with a hiphop soundtrack. And I love hiphop, I have lived and breathed since I was 11, and I really enjoy those films too, but...DIRTY DANCING!!! And it will probably be Zac Efron or some such shite that will play Johnny, and Taylor Swift or Kristen Stewart will be Baby and it won't even be set in the 60s and then I will cry.

THIS IS WRONG.

before I would have said Taylor would never get it but since they cast Julianne Hough in footloose I worry.

For one of the first times, I avidly agree with you.

It is very wrong. Hollywood has become garbage :(
I'm sorry and I know a lot of people will disagree but I couldn't stand Dirty Dancing so a remake is just an utter waste of money to me personally.

How can you NOT like Dirty Dancing?!?!?!
I hate this too. I have never seen the movie but it's a big deal and it should not be messed with! Some classics you just don't mess with. Not cool.

Meh, a new one won't change the original. I'll probably see it, due to curiosity, but it won't hold a place in my heart like the first one! When I watch DD I don't associate with Havana Nights, so I assume I wouldn't think of the new one whilst watching the old.

You've never seen it? Oh darlin', the soundtrack alone...

You must check it out! 😀

I'm in the same boat as FaithsFollower. I've never seen the original film yet I'm tremendously offended.

*high five* Now go watch it!

Thank you!! I hated the original & could care less what they do with a remake. And don't get me started about the soundtrack. I mean really, Time Of My Life? It's almost better as a Club Med commercial (or whatever it is).

And why are they doing a remake right after Patrick Swayze's death. That is the unfortunate part.

This is one they should never, ever mess with. I couldn't believe when I saw that today on my news feed! Seriously, this just spells disaster.

I actually really enjoyed Dirty Dancing. I love the old, classic feel to it. I can't believe they're actually going to do a remake. I hate Hollywood sometimes. They must just look down a list of old movies thinking "Alright lets remake this one... this one... hmm this one... Oh! And this one!"

It seems lately that, whenever someone in Hollywood wants to make a movie, but doesn't really want to go to the trouble of finding anything new, they simply "remake" something that has already been done, or add a "2" onto the end of it and call it a sequel. And invariably, the remake/sequel doesn't hold a candle to the original.Whatever happened to originality?

Originality is dead.
I'm not worried about this (completely unnecessary) remake at all; it will probably be on the same wave length as the silly Footloose remake.

There is no way they can top the original....no one is going to put our Baby in the corner. 😉 😛

This is the dumbest thing Hollywood could do in my eyes. They are making a Footloose remake and I am not to thrilled because of the main girl but I do think it will be okay in ways as much as I love it wasn't Dirty Dancing.

Dirty Dancing is one of the 80's movies that lives on and to remake it with one of the actors now passed away is just dumb to me. It is all about money and seriously I am just ticked about this whole thing. If they add "Hungry eyes" or any of the other songs I will be even more mad. My main fear is that they are going to "teen" this up and these days teen movies are not that great imo. I kind of feel how I do when I saw that reality version of The breakfast Club trailer not pleased and shocked.

Yeah it was pretty bad...I couldn't even finish it.
The entertainment industry is just running out of creativity ... They need to dot doing this to classics ... Bc now dirty dancing original is no longer a cult classic bc if the remake just awful. I understand if it was 50 yrs later but it's only been since the 80s

Time of my Life is just one song from an album that has Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, The Five Satins, The Drifters, The Contours, The Shirelles and The Ronnettes. The album is pure soul, rhytmn and blues!

😀

On VERY rare occasions, however, the sequel/remake actually IS better than the original. The original "Star Trek" movie, even though it had all of the original cast, was terrible. Both "The Wrath Of Khan," which totally saved the franchise, and the new "Star Trek" reboot were much better than the original. "Terminator 2" and "Aliens" were both better than their predecessors. So "remake" and "sequel" don't NECESSARILY have to be bad ideas. Unfortunately, they usually are.
