Discussion of 8.16 "Time of Your Life" - Released 02/07/08 (Dark Horse)

I found this issue somewhat enjoyable. I think further issues have a lot more promise going for them than this one. The art was ok, but not as good as previous issues-Buffy and Willow just seemed a little off. There was a lot of nice coloring though. I also really liked Buffy's dialogue in this issue, though she came off a little too ditzy for some reason. Her last line on the last page was hillarious.

Very introduction-y issue. Although stuff happened, it feels like nothing much happened and it was kind of a letdown. I also have to jump on the artwork-hating bandwagon. That first frame of Buffy with her head out of the top of the limo, she looked like a chimpanzee. Seriously. I hated it.

Finally has this issue arrived even to my mailbox.

I found it quite funny, Buffy in the limo was great.
- She's never been to New York, or apparently a limo. lol

I feel very out of the loop on this whole Fray thing though, I must get that comic and see what it's about.

/SK

I found this issue very enjoyable. Buffy was hilarious in New York and it was nice to see more of Kennedy. This looks like a promising start for the new arc, it’s only going to get crazier after this, according to Joss. Can’t wait!

Liked the issue, didn't like the artwork. I could barely recognize any of them. Well, the artwork in and of itself was fantastic. But again with the "Who the hell are these people, and why are we here?"

I have the Fray comics, and the Tales of the Slayers comics, and the After the Fall comics, but for some reason I've just never read them. Guess I need to fix that pretty pronto-like, hunh?

I kinda am on the fence about how Buffy was acting all goofy in New York, but I think I can let it slide because the girl just hasn't had a vacation in 8 years on the job. Heck, I haven't had a vacation in 8 years either. I think I would pretty much get a little megahappy about having any kind of vacation - especially in New York!

But the limo ride thing was kinda too goofy. Sorta. Was it the artwork that threw me? I think maybe it was, more than the actual Buffy being silly thing. Because even though Buffy's 23, sometimes she's still going on 16. I mean, I can totally picture it live-action: Buffy's talking with Willow in the limo, just not really paying attention because there's all these shiny buttons that need to be pushed, and awmigad, there's a sunroof!

Gotta love Willow. Compared to Buffy's kite-y-ness sometimes, the girl's a solid anchor. Which is weird considering how Willow expressed her fear to Kennedy late in S7 that she, herself, wasn't anchory enough.

Btw, Willow, she's been in a limo before. It was that limo ride you stuck her on so she and Cordelia could get over themselves. :lmao:

I want Georges Jeanty back with the pencils, though. Mr. Moline's work was fantastic and bold, but it was just hard for me to stay in the story when I couldn't recognize anyone.

Ah I forgot about that limo
Disappointing Amy

I have to say that I'm disappointed that Joss hasn't utilized Amy very much or very well in Season Eight. I view Amy as the anti-Willow, sort of like how Faith is the anti-Buffy, and would have liked to see a similar dynamic between those two characters. Especially since Willow is at least partly responsible for who Amy is now, having kept her (intentionally or unintentionally is up to debate) cooped up as a rat in a cage for three years. Then, Willow rejected their friendship when Amy became addicted to black magic (only to later, ironically, become addicted to black magic and become who I like to refer to as Dark Willow). Instead, it seems like much of Amy's anger is directed toward Buffy, and, worse, she seems to be working for Warren and following his commands to a certain degree. Then again, in this issue, they didn't have much face time, just enough to show that they are still around and still plotting to kill Buffy, Willow and the Slayers. And the magic bomb was pretty nifty, if ultimately only minimally effective.

I just got this issue (FINALLY! What took TFAW so long?!) and all I can say is, WOW! I was laughing the whole time. It's definitely my favorite issue so far. I hope the rest of the arc is this good (or even better, since this issue was sort of just an intro.)

Things I loved:

- Buffy, Xander, and Willow's conversation in the very beginning. I loved their talking about Chinese takeout ("Anybody want some more sweet and sour haggis?" "In two days' time, we'll be in the home of the best Chinese takeout in the world. Well, after San Francisco. And, I suppose, probably China..."), and then Xander telling Buffy to tell him how she knew about Saga Visuki "slowly, with many visuals."

- Centaur Dawn. When I first heard about it, I thought it'd be completely out of nowhere, but the whole "thricewise equals three curses" thing makes sense. Sure, the slapstick humor with Giant Dawn was pretty funny, but I'd like to see what they come up with now. I liked Xander calling Dawn "Flicka" and all that. I wonder what the third part of Dawn's curse will be.

- The return of Warren, Amy, and Twilight. I'd been wondering where those three ran off to.

- Willow and Kennedy. I'm horrified to admit this, but I actually kind of...*gulps* liked her reuniting with Willow. Their little conversation was kind of cute. But her bratty attitude toward Buffy did kind of annoy me.

- Buffy in New York. Just hilarious and adorable. "I'm King Kong of the worrrrld!"

- Xander telling Dawn how he's jealous that she gets to be a centaur. I just love Xander in season 8, but Dawn needs to go back to her less-complainy, Buffy season 7 persona.

- FRAY! Must I explain?

Yeah, to put it bluntly, I loved everything in this issue. Now...is it August yet?

God, Kennedy is still annoying. And she and Willow baby-talking each other? Please.

I'm interested in what's going to happen with Fray though. And I loved that Xander called Dawn whiny lol

I agree with the baby talk, I think that is a horrible trait in any couple!

But I find Kennedy to be far less annoying in the comics then I did on the show, although I didn't mind her on the show before hand!
