Discussion of 8.17 "Time of Your Life Part 2" - Released 04/08/08 (Dark Horse)

In his conversation with the "dark haired mad woman," Harth says, "You're connected to someone I love, and that's the one, the Slayer of Slayers...THAT'S WHO'S COMING." It would seem that this "Slayer of Slayers" has yet to make an appearance, and that brings only one person to mind. We've been told all along that Dark Horse will be able to use characters from the Angel series. Maybe we're about to see that crossover.

Dude! You so misquoted that. It goes...

"I remember fighting you.

In the dream you hurt me. Not just fighting...you're connected to someone I love.

And that's the one, the slayer of slayer's. That's who I am in the dream. That's who's coming".

Followed by Dark Willow affirming...

"Tonight the princess leaves her kingdom for the forest of the now."

and in case there's still any doubt Harth is talking about Buffy he then replies to DW's comment by saying...

"I don't understand why you want her here, or why you want my sister to find her."

I think maybe the mind did a hopeful little edit there as it was reading. 😉

Killjoy.
And what meaning pray tell, does this have for the Buffyverse?

Joss himself is now "canon".

What of Fray? Is she still canon or is it all a dream?

Just some fun showing that single images or oblique references mean squat.

Wouldn't that be true for both sides of the "Harth is referring to Spike" argument, therefore neutralizing it? Therefore the argument against would be true in either case.
Ok, sidenote, but pertaining to this arc: I am about halfway done with reading the Fray series and I *love* it. Fray is so quirky. She makes a lot of amusing observations about people and things, and it's almost Buffy-like.

Plus, it's also giving me a lot of "Aha!" moments for the BtVS comic, and has already turned over some notions I thought I had about 'how things are' in Fray's world.

I think Fray would make a pretty cool movie, too, bug I digress.

Buffy being "the slayer of slayers" kind of puts a chill in my bones, coupled with the "in the dream, you hurt me" comment.

I want to specifically understand what this means, though:

"I remember fighting you. [...] Not just fighting...you're connected to someone I love." (emphasis mine)

I have no idea what you just said or meant.

I have no idea what you just said or meant.

Allow me to explain then. The progression of the thread went like this.

White Avenger suggests the quote from the issue concerning "slayer of slayers" could refer to Spike.

I showed how the phrase in proper context clearly refers to Buffy.

You state, "single images or oblique references mean squat". The progression of the thread suggests you are referring to the discussion which proceeded it on the phrase "slayer of slayers".

I attempted to point out to you that even if what you suggest were true it would apply to the interpretation of the phrase as a reference to Spike even before the correct interpretation of the quote was offered. It therefore wouldn't matter if my point was accepted, as valid, or yours was. Either way the interpretation of "slayer of slayers" as a reference to Spike would be false.

Ah!
No, my post was unrelated to the previous conversation about Spike.
Which explains my confusion on your question.
My intent was not a connection to that however.
I started my post with "And what meaning..."
Perhaps I should have given a different preamble.

I was doing a re-read of the series and noticed these; Fray especially in connection with the current storyline.
Although, I suppose you could take this literally with Joss as Slayer of Slayers (Coppertop Twilight!) if you were so technically inclined.
Wouldn't THAT be a kick in the pants.

I believe that is now the most out-of-the-box theory on Twilight ever expressed - with textual evidence to back it up.
I do like to theorize.

I do sometimes jump to the wrong conclusions when I really shouldn't, and the term "Slayer of Slayers" while it might (and I still hope that it does in some way, regardless of how small that hope might be) refer to Spike, who I grow more and more impatient day by day to see in a reunion with Buffy simply because she deserves to know that his sacrifice wasn't as permanent as she had feared, and he deserves to have her tell him just how proud she really is of him for the hero and champion that he became and the choices he made, COULD possibly refer to Buffy by inferring that she was THE Slayer, or the GREATEST Slayer. (How's that for a run on sentence?)

But I still want it to be Spike.

Future Spike from Illyria's timeslip could feed your hope.
Perhaps I am one of the few and far between who was disappointed when I saw Willow at the end. My first thought was "seriously? How many times do we have to go there?" I understand the why... with the playing with the evil inside of Willow, and having it (apparently) win over the good inside of her. I get that, I just wish the twist could have been different. I know that if it was Faith or Giles (dress notwithstanding) I would have been happier. This is not only because of my hope that in the end the Scoobies can pull through things together, but also because I have such trouble finding the character's voices in this medium.

While reading the Buffy comics I find myself struggling to imagine the characters doing some of these things. I try to place Sarah's voice with Buffy's... and find it often doesn't jive. I read "After the Fall" (finally!), and was extremely happy that I could place the characters all rather well. I think this might be because of the fact that Angel the Series was always more of a comic book forced into a live-action television show, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer seems to be the other way around. Or, perhaps I am just crazy... and irratated for the abruptness of the comics, and the lack of continuity.

Also... why the *bleep* is Dawn a Centaur? Stups... that's all I'll say about that.

Either way, while I have enjoyed many things about the comics (and will read them religiously... I mean... it's Buffy) I feel myself becoming more and more distant with the comics, and not being drawn in more.

After that slightly off topic rant let me say that I do hope that Spike is coming back, I am madly in love with his character, he's so pimp. 😉 I do not believe that he is what the slayer of slayers bit is about, but it's a good (and hopeful) thought to have. It's too bad it wasn't the champion of champions... as I want to see Angel in the mix.

However, I am loving Fray and Buffy, the two of them bounce off one another like Joss now, and Joss on crazy pills. That's what I'm enjoying most about the current crossover.

Well have to say I didn't see the final shot comming! Whatever did Buffy do ? I'm curious as to how this fits in with twilight.

having read a lot of the old Greek tragedies, and knowing how Joss loves to spin a gut-wrenching yarn, I think the only thing worse than Buffy having to die at the hand of her best friend would be Buffy dying a senseless death in a random fight. Buffy's death has to mean something.

I know that Joss is very close to Buffy, and that she's been with him for 2 decades now. As a writer, I get that, and I get that he knows her journey and is the one that's tasked with the job of tying the two ends of time together. I don't envy that job, though.
Havent read the comics of anything, just bored at work, but I don't think Willow killing her would be a 'Joss" ending. If anything, Buffy sees she has to kill herself. Slayer of slayers slaying herself, would "mean" much more than someone else killing her.

EDIT: her taking her own life and giving up would be the "betrayal" that is spoke of.. betraying her friends by leaving them etc etc

Yah. As I said, it was a completely left-field guess, and mostly to illustrate the idea that the only thing worse than Buffy being stabbed in the back, was Buffy dying a senseless death in a random fight. Which, obviously, is an IMO thing.

Obviously Willow is involved, somehow, and it doesn't bode well. I'm waiting with bated breath to get the next issue and understand more about what's happening.

Buffy's Fate

Well, if Fray was any indication, we know the what (Buffy getting sucked into vortex), but we don't know the how. And for all we know, Buffy could end up changing her fate. Would that mean that she also changes Fray's fate, as Future Dark Willow suggested? Maybe, maybe not. I, too, like the Buffy/Fray interaction, even though it's short-lived. It's an interesting relationship.

I found this one confusing. I mistook the sister for Buffy and then was REALLY confused. I find the idea of the twin intriguing, but I could leave this storyline.

Agreed. It made more sense this time around but on the whole it was a little hard to follow. I thought the sister was Buffy too and I thought Willow was Drusilla (why is she wearing the exact same clothes as Drusilla?).
