Even though I knew it was Riley before I saw his face, I still got a shock from seeing him. Before that moment, I suspected Riley might be Twilight, seeing as he could have had suspicions about Buffy's true motives due to her association with Angel and Spike. But AndrewCrossett, that's a good point about whom Riley's siding with. My guess is Twilight, but I'm open to the possibility that he's supporting Buffy. There's a darker side to Riley that we got to see when he was hanging out at the "vamp brothel" in Season Five, but that Joss hasn't really delved into. It'll be very interesting to see how Riley's part in all this plays out.
Other thoughts on this issue: I was a bit disappointed that the trip to the future didn't answer any questions, but instead posed more of them. For example, why did Future Dark Willow exist, and what were her intentions? If Buffy doesn't tell Present Willow about Future Willow, will Future Willow become a reality? Although I have to say, I'm not surprised Willow tapped into her dark side again, since she's seemed pretty shady this season--especially in "Anywhere But Here". Nice banter between Xander and Dawn in the forest, though, and it was still nice to see Fray again.

The Late Goodbye
Got the TPB yesterday and finished it last night. I'm pretty disappointed by it. I didnt like long way home but really loved no future for you and wolves at the gate.
This story felt worthless. Besides the xander/dawn interaction and the riley suprise its definately a weak arc imo. The whole arc just felt pointless.
Also am i the only one who got really annoyed with the way fray and the others in the future would shorten every second word?? I dont remember them talking that retarted in the Fray tpb....
All in all i'll keep reading because i still want to see where the story will go, but this arc with the long way home are both average ones.

I was underwhelmed by ToYL at first too, but I've found that I like it more and more each time I re-read it. Discussing it online with other people helps a lot too. There's a LOT of significant stuff in it, which requires close attention and a lot of speculation. It's not just Joss wanting to play with his Fray characters again... his main goal with season 8 is to draw the link between the end of the TV series and the situation in "Fray." ToYL might be the most significant arc in the season so far.

It recently dawned on my that in the Fray flashback, the hand sticking out of the portal could belong to Willow. If that's true, then I'm guessing that at the moment when Buffy brings about the "death of magic", Willow decides that she can't live without magic and jumps in the portal with the demons. Instead of dying, however, she somehow transports herself to the future. Angry at Buffy because she killed off magic, Willow transports her to the future and tries to kill her either as revenge or in the hope that she will rewrite the past so that Fray's future never exists. I don't know how this will affect the current season, since Buffy has killed the future Willow, but the death of magic has not occurred. The only thing I can think of is that by killing Willow, Buffy has "closed the book" on that possible future (in which Willow teams with Harth to try to kill Buffy), but that doesn't mean that Buffy still won't try to banish magic from the world. Time travel sure is confusing and complicated!
Well at least something happened in this issue. But I'm not liking Willow's over-inflated importance. I also really don't understand why Fray wants to fight Buffy so badly.

I'm sorry @Black Eyed Guy, but Willow is pretty evil in this issue. I'm not entirely certain why, but she wants to murder Buffy for a reason I can only really assume is to get her magic powers back.
Overall this arc was pretty confusing. The Warren magic assault seemed a little strange and really just there to give Xander and Dawn some page time. The Buffy vs. Fray fight was cool, and probably the best part of the arc, but I'm not sure why Fray is so nuts. Willow, who is clearly nuts and has already admitted to lying about quite a bit, tells Fray to fight Buffy and she does. Why? Seemed a little strange to me. And sure enough, Willow was lying, so Fray was fighting Buffy for nothing. She was just wrong.
The Riley reveal was pretty cool.
Not my favorite arc, and probably the weakest one so far. It felt drawn out, like four issues was way longer than it needed to be. All of the Warren stuff didn't need to be there at all.
