Discussion of 8.20 "After These Messages..." - Released 17/12/08 (Dark Horse)

I think they're still holding out hope this series might get made. It would certainly be a lot easier to pull off than a movie. They could probably even get most of the original actors to do the voices... it's easy money for the performers and much easier to schedule than live-action work.

The show was going to be more adult in nature than a typical kiddie cartoon... though probably with less tragedy and angst than the main series. Since 2001, when the series was first proposed and the trailer made (which you can now see on YouTube), cable animation has grown quite a bit. Someplace like Cartoon Network might be a very good option nowadays.
 
Cute

I thought this issue was pretty cute, and interesting how Buffy reflects upon her past. Could have gone deeper, but it's nice that Buffy got a break from her current troubles--if only in a dream. Nice cartoony art style, too, and a nice trip down memory lane.
 
I liked this issue, it was great to go back to the scooby gang and awesome to see angel again.

I actually liked the artwork and jeanty really is becoming a favourite artist of mine, especially that last page, wow.

Batman: the Animated Series
 
This was a nostalgic issue.. so bittersweet. I felt like tearing up by just imagining how buffy would feel that she get to see her mum again.
 
I completeley disagree that 'After these messages' had nothing to do with the wider storyline. With the exception of series 1 and a few episodes of seris 2 there have not been any stand alone episodes that did not contribute to the wider storylines either by giving us a reason for the emotional state of a character or by giving something away. At the end of this issue Buffy says that mybe its true what Angel said you cannot change a persons past, but the fact that Dawn was in her dream and also in her life proves that the past can be changed as hers was. Also although ToYL was set in the future, Willow was trying to change her past by getting Fray to kill Buffy so that something didn't happen.
I think thisa issue was hinting that Buffy need to change/undo something that she did - possibly turn the slayers back to potentials.

Joyce even asks Buffy what is it that she needs to change at the beggining of the issue.

When scoobies had thier dreams at the end of season 4 - Primal a lot of what happened had in the dreams actually happened iin season 5&6

i think that we should treat this issue the same- some of the content and what the characters were saying may have some bearing on future episodes
 
This might be my favorite issue of S8 so far, and it was nice to see it being a tribute issue to Sam Loeb.

Felt like classic Buffy. The Angel scene was great, all of Buffy's narration was hilarious. The story was fun and it fit Buffy's mood of where she's at right now, how tired she feels.

Great, great issue. Pretty much everything a one-shot should be.
