Discussion of 8.34 "Twilight Part 3" - Released 4/07/10 (Dark Horse)

Buffy and Angel pretty much have Superman-like powers now. Nothing normal can hurt them. But Superman would not be an interesting character if he was absolutely invulnerable... he'd just automatically defeat every obstacle he encountered, and it would be boring.

Superman is restrained by Kryptonite, and by his conscience.

We don't know yet whether Angel and Buffy have any conscience left. Buffy apparently doesn't realize yet the effects her actions are having. Angel might or might not. When they do realize, will they try to stop it, or will they just rationalize that this is "nature taking its course" and that crying over the death of humanity is as pointless as crying over the death of the dinosaurs?

If their conscience won't stop them, then somebody's going to have to find some kryptonite.

Well if we get down to it...Angel is KEY to the Senior Partner's plan. What do they want really? End of the world or such? Or maybe this is going right along with their plans.

Buffy and Angel ripped a a giant hole in the Earth dimension and allowed thousands of old world demons in. And they're not here to protect everyone else from them. So two major players are out.

And that leaves an army of slayers without powers (unless the panel where Faith gets her powers back go to the rest of the slayers), some witches and billions of helpess humans at their mercy.

Man, I wonder how that season finale is going to play out? I'm liking this so far. As for the Angel Comic...I figure that is on its own until DH and IDW merge along somewhere...hopefully soon. But I like it on its own too.

The 2 companies have no need to "merge" storylines, ever.

Really didn't like this issue. Didn't feel like it answered any questions; or that anything happened to move the story forward.

After the last issue I thought that now we'd get the explanations and the story could move ahed to some conclusion. This issue was just some dialog; but it stopped right before the point when things were to be explained.

Not sure if it could be avoided but with so few pages each issue they really need to use them better.

But there's only so much time (no more than around a year or two) to fill in the Angel comics until the timelines will overlap. And if they intend to have the stories line up logically with the Twangel thing (I doubt they will), they'd have to start telling the arc leading to Angel's decision to take up the costume, soonish.

I´m afraid we aren´t getting much answers from the next issue either.

Issue 34 was all about their sexathon and entering the twilightzone. I hope they don´t talk the whole 35th issue. Angel is very boring when he talks and i´ve got always the urge to punch him in the face.

Well if Buffy wasn't evolved then none of this would have happened. She has basically defied the laws of physics, The Law for the Conservation for Energy states that:

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but converted from one form to another.

What we (fandom) had interpretated as a sharing of the Slayer power was actually the creation of "new" power. Buffy essentially created the next wrung on the evolutionary ladder.

The reason we didn't see it until these last few issues is because it has been a slow build up, but it is evolution, at least according to canon.

I don't she evolved that much between a few issues, the powers themseleves were forced into her except growing within her. In terms of evolution there has to be growth from the inside, and outside influences. However, it still doesn't really makes sense, and she may have come up with the spell for the potentionals but no way it would have worked without Willow, she did all the work, Buffy just came up with the idea, and Buffy was no closer to a god for most of the season, again that was Willow and still probably is. Also in the Wish, there is proof that Buffy would have been dead without her friends, as well as Angel, and thats canon. The whole prophetcy is suspect, why is it that Twilights goal is suddenly to make a new race with Buffy, as opposed to ending magic, I'm looking at this objectively and there are plenty of reasons to question in, I'm sure it says it, but that doesn't mean I won't question it, espcially if there are reasons not to believe it. No doubt Buffy is a unique slayer, and is probably more evolved than others, but I don't think she has evolved enough, in a few issues to become a god. Also in the Buffyverse, what you see isn't always what you get. So I'll agree to disagree.

Maybe instead of "evolution," we should see Buffy's change as a metamorphosis, the way that a caterpillar develops into a butterfly, or maybe even "mutation," In this case, what changes isn't the girl herself, but the powers that she possesses. Just like a Potential has nothing beyond normal strength, speed, and all of the rest before she is Called, then, suddenly, she has the powers of a Slayer. Think of what has happened to Buffy as a "Second Calling," and the increase in her powers as nothing more than her metamorphosis/mutation into...whatever the he** she has become now (other than Angel's snuggle puppy)

As for what has happened to Angel, it might, and I emphasize MIGHT, be something similar as applied to a vampire. Normal human until he is turned, then suddenly superhuman strength and immortality. Angel might have been turned once more, morphing from vampire into whatever he has become.

(Considering Joss' association lately with the mutants known as "X-Men," that might make more sense than any other explanation.)

Good description of it, it makes more sense than the evolution theory the prophetcy states. Although, I'm not so sure about the second calling, I think it is really more of the peice of the puzzle, to what leads up to Frayverse.

One positive note for Spuffies everywhere. Finally, in canon context, Buffy's TWO TRUE LOVES are identified as Spike and that other vampire. Not strongest supporter. Not best friend. TRUE...LOVE...It's official. Put that in your little pipes and smoke it, Bangels!

This particular comic has already put forth theories by characters about other characters that have been shown to be false.

Willow was putting forth a theory, we have yet to have it confirmed. Considering that said theory was an extension of Giles' original shakey legend (that Angel has already indicated is lacking accuracy) I'll stand by my opinion and wait for Buffy to tell us how she feels.

Key part: "That have been shown to be false." As I said, if something false is written, it then has to be revealed as false later or the audience won't know. 🙂 Kind of like "Innocent until proven guilty." True until proven false. As it has NOT been proven to be false, I see no reason to not believe that it's true.

Of course, you totally have the right to believe what you choose to believe. 😀 (And really, even if it is true- Does it actually change anything?)
