And think most of the major ships (or just possible fan-ships) involving Buffy were definitely ended this season; some of them by implication and some of them with what seems almost like malice. Looking at what was to come its possible that it was planned that way.

I can see that they might have planned it, though I have heard there are later developments again. I agree with comments made by White Avenger that Spike has become more like a medieval knight devoted to selfless service to his lady, rather than a lover. And Angel... well, we'll see. I'm glad, really, because while the ships are fun and romantic, at this point they are just treading water with nothing new to say.
