My friend got me part IV but I've told him now that I know what happens...I don't really want to read it. 🙁

and lorne wasn't sucked back to pylea, they killed lorne off in a special comic dedicated to Andy Hallet

I thought Lorne was still alive but is at " one with the universe
if he's really dead then I'm sad all over again. Why are all my favourite characters getting killed off?

As regards the Shanshu, since several people have asked about it and whether the expulsion of magic from Buffy's universe makes it invalid, let me simply point out that the prophecy involves a vampire with a soul providing key assistance to the Senior Partners in an apocalypse. In no place does it state or require that that assistance have to be in Buffy's universe. Angel could help the Senior Partners in another universe and still receive his reward, then return home (only to find, of course, that while he was away, 100 years have passed. No problem, though, because he meets and falls in love with Buffy and Spike's granddaughter.)

Does the Shanshu specify which apocolypse? Does it specificaly say the Senior Partners are involved?

That wasn't a canon comic, however. Joss wasn't involved with it.

But it's possible that only those demons who were here because of Twilight were sucked back out again. If so, then all the demons currently here would be stranded here permanently, since there will be no more portals. (Which would be fine with Lorne.)

And about the whole Lorne thing- it just reminds me that I wonder what they're going to do with all the IDW comics stuff. It's going to be hard to "not consider it canon" when everything combines next year.

I doubt it will be much of an issue, because I don't think Angel's story from now on will involve AI. I expect the current Angel IDW series will wrap up the AI story and end with those characters (Connor, Gunn, Illyria) all going their own ways, and you can imagine whatever future for them you like.

But I think Angel himself is now part of the Buffy story again, like he was in the first three seasons.

I think SA confirmed at a recent con that AI characters will appear in Angel's title in S9.

Wow.

Also, since Lorne isn't technically a demon, but is, in fact, a native from another reality, none of this might apply to him in any way. The spell doesn't effect E T's.

(Just a loophole that they could use if they really felt that it might be an issue)

I don't remember that distinction ever being made... seems like he was always referred to as a demon, including by himself. But, the definition of "demon" was always kind of fuzzy.

It doesn't seem to be affecting Spike's bug crew either.

I don't really know why the end of magic would cause those portals to go into reverse anyway. Seems like they should just close, and leave all those demons here.

Maybe the deal is that any currently open portals will suck back whatever came through them, and then close.

I guess it's up to Joss, then. Since he doesn't even read the IDW comics, I wouldn't expect him to reference them at all. Back when Dark Horse was publishing the licensed Buffy comic during the show's run, the show never made any attempt to line up with the comics' continuity. I don't expect this will be any different.

But Lorne would have called himself a demon just so that he would fit in with their society. As I said, it's just a loophole that they could use to keep him around if all of the other demons got sucked away.

I wouldn't expect anything but the original 16 issues of ATF, issue 23 and possibly Lynch's current Spike mini-series to be referenced.

You said you thought the story got away from him before, bringing on the cast of ATF would be fuel on the fire. Too big already and getting bigger wont help matters, just get more fantastical.

I do think the story got away from him, or maybe even he has come away from it. I think perhaps that Buffy's real story, at least for Joss, ended with The Gift. The show (and comic) never had the same heart after that.

I definitely agree that a smaller cast and scope is needed next season, and we have been told to expect that. However, if you are telling an Angel story then the people that have shaped his life for the last 5 years will have to feature somehow. Maybe not profoundly but they will have to be addressed somehow.

I hate to sound like whinging White Avenger on the non-reaction of Spike.. but I think I kinda would like to see Buffys reaction upon seeing Connor for the first time. If indeed they have free reign, I think thats kinda a must. Connor needs to flirt with Buffy as well.

"Whinging White Avenger"? Just what in all perdition is "whinging," and when have I ever done it?

I agree. There must be Buffy/Connor interaction. I've always felt that they would fill in the missing parts of Angel's life for each other.

And yes, I'm fairly certain he will flirt with her.

Or at least try.

I also think she will smack him upside the head.

Angel will probably beat her to it. He's already lost one girl friend to "Young and Hormone-Filled." I doubt that he's going to let the boy try that again.

I disagree... well, depending if its our Buffy or Season 8 Buffy. I think she would just stand there in stunned silence for a minute before busting out laughing.

More likely, the boy's gonna set his sights on Dawn. The two seem made for each other anyhow. Xander needs to find himself a nice, mature demon lady and settle down somewhere. I bet his buddy Drac could fix him up with a hot little number, or maybe D'Hoffryn has another "Justice Demon" in need of a few orgasms.

Kean agrees: FYI, whinging is whining.

I will have you know that I might fume, I might pout, I may sulk, and on occasion I might even cry out loud, but I NEVER either "whing," OR "whine."
