I am not really an Angel fan but I think season eight grossly exaggerated his flaws. He is just criminally stupid in S8, no other way to describe it. He has been ruthless and selfish before but that moronic? He really thought Buffy was going to buy his explanation "er, a prophecy told me to put on a mask and become a villain"? Really? The plan apparently hinges on keeping Buffy in the dark yet in the end he reveals his identity to her anyway?!? He really thought Buffy was going to just abandon the whole world to literally go to hell and come live with him in some "paradise"? No, scratch Buffy he abandoned his own friends. Whistler tells him that the other possible futures are worse and Angel just accepts that?!?

So, yes, while I share Xander's "One day you are gonna die and I am gonna be there" attitude towards Angel, I still think the way he behaves in season eight makes no sense. Saying that Angel always had it in him kind of reminds me of the claims that Willow tricking Cordelia into using the delete key was foreshadowing for her attempt to destroy the world...

Its true its exaggerating Angel's flaws but I thinks more to mirror how Buffy had become like Angel in season 5, she never went as far as he did. However, she has been mirror his big picture attitude in season 5, she showed indifference to innocents dying, she allowed Angel to get her to betray her own morals, but he is the only character that could get her to fall like she did. His character's characterization is the only one besides Giles who is very ruthless when it comes to the big picture. Angel character historically has never chosen a side of good or evil, he can't keep his morals and tends to give in when tempted. His character does have good qualities, but its his worst qualities that were needed to have someone mirror Buffy in how she had betrayed her own morals. Its more convincing to me that it had to be him for Twilight because of ATS 5, that mirrors Buffy's arc of betraying herself. Angel's character in the early years is the one who I prefer, I'm not sure what his character stands for anymore in the later years, he's too inconsistent with his morals.
