Discussion of "Angel: After the Fall #5" - Released 3/19/08 (IDW)

The White Room is an existential pocketverse generated and maintained by the will/power of the Senior Partners, we have seen them revoke its existence once before in Season 5.

Its exists as a point between our world and their plane of existence. The Conduit is a semi-corporeal life form that has a psychic link to both worlds and is as close to direct communication with the Senior Partners as one can get.

For one thing I'd like to see the concept explored a little more in the comics, maybe the same method for its creation where used in albeit a different way to take Los Angeles into Hell. Manifesting a pocket of that reality around LA?

Kinda liek bringing Hell to LA, and not the other way around?
Wesley is the new liaison, since the Conduit only exists within the White Room, and with the W&H building in the state it is, and any physical being in such danger in a Hell like setting, makes sense for W&H to use a non-corporeal or non-killable liaison not bound to the building.

I have a thought. W&H didnt send LA to hell. Why kill off most of there Human clinets not smart move for a lawfirm. Eve said if W&H wasnt around evil would go someplace else that was more evil. Veil and Arch Duke Sabisis had hundreds of followers who hated humans and knew how to punish angel for killing there "LORDS" With no one to say no they use all there powers bring about Hell-a. No one in the COTBT was a human.

Liked this issue, although was kind of wanting them to see Gunn.. really curious about what's up with that.

But yay Spike has regular clothes! And so does his army of playboy playmates.
Loved the Angel and Spike love. Something about Spike kicking butt and being all righteous that's just good to watch. 😛
Wasn't expecting the Fred reveal at all! Even though it was hinted at rather largely. Wonder why Spike thinks it's bad if Wesley is around her...

Am I the only one that WASN'T tickled to see Fred?
I don't know, maybe it's the comic book form and not TV (and thus not REALLY "Fred" in my head) or maybe it's because Wesley's still dead and apparently able to be pulled like silly putty in the SP's non-existent hand AND Gunn's "dead". It could be that she looks so small and helpless in the middle of that battle too. Certainly bad timing.
But, I LIKE Illyria! And I'm worried about what will happen if 1.) Fred comes back 2.) She's constantly popping back and forth and WORSE 3.) If they can somehow separate them. Then, sure, we'll have Fred, but so much of Illyria's humanity has been based on what was left of Fred. At least that's how they've played it. Not to mention, it's FRED that made the other's "deal" with Illyria and help make her as adorable as she was.
I wonder if it has more to do with what is happening to Nina. Kind of Wolf/Woman at the same time so Illyria would be two things at once too. Spike obviously knew, so it must have been going on for some time now.

Honestly, there are only two outcomes I think I could live with.
1.) Fred comes back as a ghost too and we end up with TWO of them running around and in love, where she can bop over and help Gunn from time to time. Although, I don't see how TWO ghosts are going to help much. Wesley seems to be practically useless. But, maybe Fred can find a way, in hell, to bring them BOTH back.
2.) It turns into an Incredible Hulk type thing. We have Fred when she's happy and then she turns mean and blue when she's mad. That would be kind of fun. Heck, then she'd make a GREAT girl for Spike. Just the kind of woman he needs. And, I'd PAY to hear her say, "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry":lmao::lmao:

Angel shaving was hilarious and the ending well...I can wait till the next part, not as exciting as it would have been if th ecomic had been released near to S5.
I guess I have lost some of the suspence excitment that went with watching the show, also the SP's really need their butts kicked for sure, I hate that they go unpunished and need to feel the pain!

I feel kinda cheated. I was really looking forward to an epic fight between the dragon and the T Rex. And as far as the last panel is concerned, there was always a plan for Season 6, if the show had stayed on the air, to split Illyria/Fred into two separate beings. It looks like they're moving on with that. Probably Ferd's body is rejecting the hell god power, kind of like an overloaded transformer, and the only way to prevent her/them from dying will be to split the combined entity into two separate beings. How long do you think it'll take Fred, once she's separated from Illyria, to find a way to make Wes all solid again?

AFTER THE FALL REREAD -- #5

Official Angel: After the Fall reread #5

Another really good issue. They'd been building towards the battle royal between Angel and the Hell Lords' champions and it was pretty awesome. I liked the revelation that Angel really didn't have a plan. He was going to go into the middle of hell and fight, and if anyone showed up to help him, well, that would be okay too. Classic Angel, and I love it.

I suppose all of Angel's former (and I'm guessing future) teammates showing up to help him when it mattered most could have been predicted, but I'm a sucker for moments like that. The talk that Angel and Spike have about Illyria was awesome. It's cool to see how much Spike clearly cares for her. And Gunn's watching on the sidelines was interesting. I have a feeling he has something big in the works.

Wesley kind of had his own thing going on for most of the issue, but liked it a lot. I don't think for one second that he's a bad guy, and it's always cool seeing the badass side of Wes come out.

The ending was pretty crazy too. I wasn't anticipating Illyria to just transform back into Fred like that! I thought, from what was said in S5 after Fred died, that everything about her had been shattered, soul and all. It looks pretty clear now though that there are remnants of Fred still embedded in Illyria, and that she's losing it. Spike won't be able to contain her forever. Wes' arrival at the fight being the thing that triggered Illyria changing back to Fred was awesome.

As a small note, I liked all the inner dialogue Angel has. It really sounds exactly like how Angel should be. I can just hear him in my head with that specific sense of humor he has when I'm reading.

Also, did anyone catch the Jay and Silent Bob cameo at the start?

What did you guys think?

I've only previously read issues 1-4 so from here on it is my first time reading it. 😉

Angel shaving and eating some sort of fruity sugary cereal while preparing for the battle was kinda funny. Especially when we find out he has no plan.

I loved seeing the gang all show up and help Angel in the battle. Loved Lorne's line "Let's go to work".

I'm really liking the dynamic between Spike and Illyria!

IMO the T-Rex was silly. Why is a dinosaur in hell LA? Demons, monsters, and other supernatural beings make sense but a T-Rex?

Gunn watching the old gang come together from the shadows was again heartbreaking, he has always been a favorite character of mine; I can't wait to see what they have planned for him.

I enjoyed Wesley's part....it will be interesting to see what direction his characters go. I don't think he's bad but it seems like it may be difficult for him to firmly remain on Team Angel.

Aww Fred! I wonder if part of Fred has always been in Illyria or if them being in a hell is causing Fred to slip back.

I suppose all of Angel's former (and I'm guessing future) teammates showing up to help him when it mattered most could have been predicted, but I'm a sucker for moments like that.

Same here 🙂

I'm interested to see what happens with Wesley as well - and Fred! I did like the gang being all together again.

Is this your first time reading After the Fall?

I was unsure of it at the beginning but really grew to love the new setting and the characters still felt true to themselves, which I struggled with in Buffy Season Eight.

I started reading it before but didn't get far
I actually really enjoyed this issue. I think the story is starting to shape up and the creative team have definitely the show's feel right. I love the dramatic reveal of Fred. It was very well done, but I am not a big fan of her so I guess we will see what happens!
