Disney buys Star Wars for 4.05 Billion

If the recent Marvel movies weren't good I'd be more worried. I really think it will be OK. Hopefully they will learn from the mistakes of episodes I-III & build on some of the other good stuff they've done (The Clone Wars animated series for example). My kids are ecstatic about another movie. They're too young to even have seen the most recent one in the theaters. So I hope it lives up to all of our expectations.

I haven read all the details- so is Lucas NOT going to be directly involved? And what of the plans for the new live-action television series that were in the works?

There is also concern about the comics. I have not read them yet but I've heard that their good. There are quite a few series and I think it would be a big blow to Dark Horse. Dark Horse has said that they will remain with them for the moment, but they have no idea what the future holds.

It was announced that George Lucas is going to be involved at length as a creative consultant. He'll probably give input into the movie, without being a deciding voice, if I could guess. I hadn't heard about a T.V. show for Star Wars. If they're producing new movies, I would guess that would be scrapped, but who knows? Marvel is trying something similar right now with the Avengers franchise on the big screen and the new S.H.E.I.L.D on the small one. They could very well continue that trend with Star Wars.

As for Dark Horse, this would be a tremendously big blow to them. I mean, Star Wars has been THE linchpin book for Dark Horse. That's there feature title, like Batman or Spiderman in DC or Marvel. I've never read the Star Wars comics, but they've been going for years and years now, and I think they're mostly well received.

You should really read some of the comics. The recent Darth Vader: Ghost Prison mini series was amazing. Also the Legacy series is great too, I highly recommend them as comic book and star wars fan. As for Dark Horse, honestly I think they are going to lose the Star Wars comics. Seeing as how Disney owns Marvel why wouldn't they let Marvel create and publish them?

Well, Disney, who owns Marvel, isn't going to want a rival comic company publish their property without Disney getting a big cut. I could see Dark Horse working out a deal with Disney/Marvel to sell the publishing rights back to Marvel, where I would imagine they would go to one or two titles (separate from the rest of the Marvel universe. I can't see Star Wars interacting successfully with the other Marvel characters).

I'll check that out, the Darth Vader series. I've never been a huge Star Wars fan but even so, it's a series I've wanted to check out.

So, out of curiosity, if Disney purchased Lucas Films and presumably everything that goes along with them, does that mean they also own the rights to the Indiana Jones franchise as well? I mean, George Lucas produced and heavily influenced every one of those movies, so I'm not entirely sure.

OMG, I just saw this on Facebook and I'm revising my opinion. This is what I wrote in response: "Sigh. You know I said earlier that I wasn't too worried based on how things have turned out with the Marvel movies, & then I remembered John Carter. Excellent ground-breaking book, beyond-terrible movie. It wasn't just that they changed the plot, it was the Disneyfication of it that made it mock-worthy. And that made me mad, that they did that to one of the founding texts of the science fiction genre. Then again, my kids liked it, just as I'm sure they will love this commercial. So, my feelings are mixed."

As to the comics, Marvel made some earlier Star Wars comics (like, after the original trilogy) so yes I anticipate that they will get them back. Too bad. Although maybe the heightened interest will at least bring Dark Horse some more money from their existing series.

This is the best news. I'm looking forward to an Avenger type billion dollar blockbuster trilogy in the future =) More Jedi stories in the Star Wars verse I will welcome. Everyone else can go watch the old movies and ignore all of us having fun watching all the movies.

Oh I'm definitely excited about a new movie. And it's not that I hate episodes I-III, I don't actually (although I prefer the original trilogy). I've already stated that I like the animated series, so expanding the universe is not a problem for me. I do worry a bit about the Disney influence.

Because the more it think about John Carter, the more pissed off I get. So there are 2 ways this can go: the way of John Carter or the way of Avengers et al. I think it's too soon to tell.

There is no chance, not even 1% of a chance that it WON'T go the way the Avengers went. That is why they bought it. To market it in a way to craft out 3 500+ million dollar movies, then all the merchandise and rest of the world box office.

In my mind at least.

There is also less than 1% of a chance that it will go the way of John Carter. It's Star Wars. If a Star Wars movie comes out it will automatically crack 100 million dollars, money wise. With the way technology is going, I'm extremely excited to see a new Star Wars and how that will look now.

All I can picture is an amazingly beautiful female protagonist/main character killing Sith with a light saber. It looks very cool in my head. 😛

Or maybe we should have a female Sith Lord be the main villain. We've never had female villain in any of the movies. It could be really cool if done right.

That is impressive! I'll be interested to see which foundation. IMO not all "education foundations" are created equally.

Personally, I don't care much about the new Star Wars movies. First, I was kind of mad, but now I don't really have anything against it, but I'm not really thrilled. However, if they really get the original cast, I'm more likely to watch it.
 
I can see this as being a worthwhile move for Disney, but honestly, do we need Star Wars 7, 8 and 9? I am completely out of respect for Hollywood, which would rather recycle old retreads for stories than generate worthwhile new material. "Star Wars" and "Return of the Jedi" were great movies. I doubt there are any great movies left in the series, but I am sure the public will eat it up and reward Disney with good box office. But they won't get my money and I know I'm not alone in this.

To be honest I've never really understood this line of thinking. I mean, I get it if a franchise rushes development on sequels (like they did with both Transformers sequels) or is just plain out of ideas and is milking a franchise (again, like Transformers), but truthfully, by the time the new Star Wars is released into theaters (without any production delays or things like that) it will have been a full ten years between the last one and the new one. And, we have no idea what Disney will bring to the table. To just assume that they're going to be bad or generic simply because it's a sequel (or a prequel) seems kind of cynical to me. If they do suck, then yeah, I understand where you're coming from, but Star Wars has a wealth of mythology that hasn't been explored in film yet.

And, it makes money. That's been proven, so of course studios are going to keep making the movies that the public has shown they want to see. That's just business. If we had the rights to Star Wars (which Disney paid a huge amount of money for), would we stop making new projects related to it, with that kind of money on the table? I highly doubt it.

Wow. Why is George being such a chode? Shouldn't he go buy an island? Or a presidency? Or a drug that makes you immortal? He's giving it all away?!?!! If I was his great great great great grandson and had to grow up poor because of him I'd be super bitter.

First I felt the same way about it. I thought it was just because of the money. But 30 years ago there were already plans that the Star Wars series was going to consist of three trilogies. And since they sold the rights to Disney, there's not going be the problem that made the prequels so terrible, in my opinion: George Lucas was in total control and nobody dared to criticize him. Many things could have been avoided if someone had said to George that certain things in the movies just didn't work.
Oh, and "Star Wars" and "Return of the Jedi" were great movies?? What about The Empire Strikes Back?
