Do We Really Need Entertainment?

So late to this so my thoughts have already been voiced.

if you just limit entertainment to music (recorded), tv and movies yes we could definitely live without it. To me it's so much more than that. No matter how our lives look like we'll always find ways to be entertained/distracted from the worries of our life. No music? Well what stops me from humming or singing, alone or with friends.

We're so used to what we have so it would take some adjustment to live without it. Drumming with my fingers etc. Simple things can do a big difference.

Go camping for a week or two and don't use your cell phone. You'll survive. I promise. The first day or 4 will be hard but it'll get easier. Being without a computer for a few months and not having a phone with internet connection sucked big time the first week or so but then I got used to it.

Without entertainment we'd just be slaves going to work and doing nothing but working. Or even worse just give up on life. Everyone needs something to look forward to.

Hmmmm...

I think the craving for entertainment has been instilled into society these days. When I was younger it was so much easier to entertain yourself. A box of sand. Bubble wrap. Mud. Whatever was handy worked. I could entertain myself for hours. Now there's iPods, iPads, cell phones, computers that take you anywhere you want to go, DS, Xbox, Wii, iTunes, Kindles, Nook, Blue-Ray, 3-D Movies, Facebook, Twitter, NetFlix. I tell my daughter to read a book or get out her crayons and she looks at me like I've grown another head!
Do we NEED entertainment? No. But we sure as hell want it, don't we? I mean, here we are. Case in point. 😛

We all hallucinate at night when we fall asleep, we've a nice word for it called dreaming, but really no one knows why we do it and if you think about it, it's pretty absurd.

Would it be a stretch to equate dreaming to 'Entertainment'?

Without dreaming/proper sleep, we wouldn't be sane for very long, so no, without 'entertainment' we wouldn't be people.

We might die without it, or go space crazy.

Entertainment lets us escape from the realities of life- work, mortgages, relationship drama, death, etc. by focusing on the lives of others and going into another world. In that way I think it's vital to survival as everyone needs to unwind at times and put things on the backburner. Plus you can learn things from indulging in entertainment that can help you in the real world.

Personally speaking, I wouldn't have gotten through uni or even the past year if it wasn't for TV, literature and Twitter. It encouraged me to get up in the morning, to see a doctor, to ignore idiots who tried to bully me, to get focused.

Of course it's not needed to live. However, its something that keeps people going. Dating back hundreds of years, there has been theater, music, art and so on. I defiantly enjoy entertainment. While its not needed, it keeps me from going insane and focused on regular everyday struggles. Even reading helps so incredibly much.
