I just got back from the vet with my two dogs. The lhasa apso was like ooooh treats! Treats on a table! More treats! This place is FUN! TREATS!

The poodle thought "why is this woman trying to kill me!" Wound up tight like a spring bouncing around like bloody Tigger. Every time I put my arm out she curled herself around it begging to be picked up and cuddled and taken away from jabby vet lady.

I never understood kittens and their fascination with clinging to the back of your legs. They'd leap on for a second and then run away. They grow out of it, but it always left me scratching my head over that particular behaviour. ๐Ÿคฃ

I compromised and got a dog that is known for being like a cat (borzoi).

So now Iโ€™ve got a giant, independent, non-listening, aloof, moody, lots of attitude, predator in my home that also demands a lot of walks and outdoor activities.

Best of both worlds really.

This is sad and hilarious all at the same time!
As a petsitter, I live and work with cats and dogs of many different personalities. I like dogs, but I love cats. Big dogs used to make me nervous, and I'm getting over that. But what it really comes down to for me is how independent cats are vs. how needy dogs can be. Your cat will probably adapt better to you being gone while your dog will pace, whine, and wonder, "Where'd my human go?" until the day you come back. You could say that makes cats more detached, but I'd just consider them more easily adapted.

One major lesson I have learned when it comes to caring for any animal: The unexpected will happen.

Also snakes and other reptiles are *usually* so much easier than pets of the fluffy variety, there's genuniely less chaos ๐Ÿ˜†

Until they get out of their cage, then it's just like a scavenger hunt to find them. I had a Black Rat snake for a while. Well one day while I was at work it escaped it's cage. I looked for two days to no avail. I finally did find it in the TOP drawer of my dresser curled up inside the rolled up belt I was looking for.
 
I have been owned by two cats since moving to my current adopted city. One of them was a superintelligent megalomaniac female Tuxedo with aspirations for world domination and a preference for female company. My second and current is a large, friendly but somewhat dim Birman who has adopted several feline squishmallows as surrogate kittens and prefers chasing mice to birds (except in the form of Chicken Temptations!)
 
I love watching kittens learn how to hunt things. Whether it's a bug, another kitten, or your foot...they put so much effort into it. That final pounce, and boom! Success! I love cats so much. ๐Ÿ’•

Not really into dogs because....they have no refinement. ๐Ÿ˜„ And they're too needy.
 
My two cats were and are great mousers. Bebert (my current) teaches neighbour's kittens to hunt meeses. He's so good at it that when my latest round of neighbours move out, my landlord borrows Bebert to suss out whether or not there are any residual rodents in the newly vacated flats. Mousie detection, apprehension and disposal is rewarded by free catfood of his favourite kind (Chicken Temptations).

Right. And with that kind of attitude you never will. You want an animal that you can manipulate, control, own, and in your own words: "have"
One simply cannot have a cat.
Once you get past your wanton desire to have and control everything in your life you might find yourself in a position to appreciate the joys of cat ownership. And by cat ownership I of course mean being owned by one. Until that day, keep on enjoying your dimwitted canine that looks to you to do everything for it because it doesn't know the meaning of the word independence.

Some dogs go indoors in litter boxes. Some cats go outside to do their bidness.

I'm a cat person because cats are low maintenance, except when They Want to Be Fed. Also, in that contingency, it's worth remembering that the cat definition of an hour is only fifteen minutes long.
