This whole discussion about people being obese and in your face is really judgemental. Not every person that's overweight is overweight because of over indulging in a poor diet, although it is a big factor in most obese people, some could be genetically big, have thyroid problems, anything. They could have just given birth. That person you're calling obese could live to be 100 theres nothing set in stone that says just because you eat crap foods that you're going to die young or have heart disease, you're more susceptible to it yes but it's not guaranteed. The same way people that smoke aren't necessarily going to get lung cancer and die. It's a personal choice how you live your life because it's your life. There's more to people than what meets the eye. People always live in the belief that it will never happen to them and that goes for obese people, smokers, drinkers, drug abusers anyone. The best we can do is educate people about the risks you can't physically force people to listen and change because that's up to them to do.

Let's not argue about it though, we're all supposed to be friends here.

Completely agree. As I said - I was being intentionally over the top to compare the reaction.
If I have to 'keep the smoke to myself' then why don't people have to keep their fat asses out of my view?!

My butt is normal sized for my height and I dont eat nasty, artery clogging food on a regular basis... And honestly I don't care if you smoke. It's legal. However, I don't think it's okay for you to stand in the entrance of a building and smoke so that I don't have a choice about walking through your smoke cloud. I shouldn't have to inhale the consequences of your personal choice. I've never been forced to clog my veins with donuts by an overweight person. The sight of you smoking doesn't bother me. I don't care. Walking through poisonous smoke, inhaling it, and passing it to my growing fetus *is* something I care about though. Just move out of the doorway and continue as you wish!

I don't smoke. I've tried a cigarette before to see what the attraction was but wasn't interested enough to continue. I will not let smokers around my child.

Not a smoker and never will be one. If people want to smoke that's their choice but I what I don't understand is those who do it when they have a higher risk of getting cancer. I have a friend at work who has had a lot of family members with cancer and she herself has a heart condition and has had cancerous cells removed. Yet she continues to puff away on cigarettes knowing it's not helping her health what so ever. That really grates on my nerves.

That's the nature of addiction. It's not good, but that is life and it's not your place to be concerned about a choice that she makes.

I don't smoke around my kids. I don't even let them see me do it. So are you saying, that you will not let someone that is smoking around your kids, or do you mean just a smoker in general regardless if they are doing it or not, cause that is pretty callous.

If someone IS smoking or has just smoked (without washing their hands), they're not coming around her. If someone smokes at home or whatever, I wouldnt say no only on principal. Lol, I'm not THAT much of a bitca!

I don't smoke, although I have tried. Although I can see the experience as enjoyable, it just seemed like a lot of work and I'm lazy LOL! Although I dislike cigarette smoking (as in, being around it) my husband smoked. I made him smoke outside, and he eventually quit although it took him a few times. I'm very sympathetic to the addictive nature of smoking and how hard it is to quit. What I'm not sympathetic about is people smoking around my kids, especially my middle son who has asthma. This is a big problem when we go to my husband's family gatherings, as quite a few people smoke, they do it inside, and have no qualms about doing it right next to other people including my children. They don't even crack a freaking window! Suffice it to say that my kids & I spend a lot of time outdoors when we're at Grannie's and Big Grandpa's. Thankfully they have a large lot with animals (chickens, goats, etc) so the kids actually prefer that.

I don't have a lot of sympathy about people who smoke around kids, pregnant women, and sick adults. I do have some sympathy for smoking pregnant women, I know how hard it is to quit, although I think it is very harmful to the baby.

I used to smoke a bit (as a teenager eeew), but stopped when i turned 18.
Personally I dont like smoking but each to their own! Whatever floats ya boat! 🙂

Gotta be said about us smokers(i smoke like 20 a day) but, we waste ALOOOOOT of money, ruin health and stink of smoke, and for what? The money i spend a month on cigs could be spent buying a new car. To all smokers, do you really wanna be smoking in 5 years from now?

To all the people that have the audacity to say that my habit 'disgusts' them I would like to ask you how you would feel if I turned around and said that your weight disgusted me, or if your facial flaws repulsed me.

I think it is a complete contradiction to call some disgusting for being a smoker when I can guarantee that majority of you wolf down high fat and sugar foods resulting in health problems that make me feel repulsed.

Seriously, think about what you're saying rather than just repeating back to me the same terrible PSA's that I see on the television. Bloody. Hell.

Stop getting so defensive over people seeing smoking as disgusting. People judge others by their actions. If you do something stupid and people look down on you for it then don't do something stupid to start with. Smoking is a very stupid thing to do. It's not an opinion, it's a fact. It being legal doesn't make it OK to do and it doesn't make those that are doing it any less foolish.

Getting angry at those looking down on people who are willingly killing themselves from the inside out makes ZERO sense to anyone that thinks with logic.

You have no right to look down on me for what I choose to do with my own body. You don't even know me or what I have been through, so shut up.
Nope, I've always found smoking to be disgusting. Just the smell makes me sick, I don't know how people could actually smoke that stuff and not mind smelling like that. :X

/me moves out of the doorway.

This is clearly coming from something that has happened to you in the past. Obviously, like all human beings, some smokers can be complete and utter douche-bags. I happily smoke away outside bars and restaurants and do my best to not let smoke get in anyone's face.

I apologise on behalf of my species if people have been rude regarding this.

Having said that...

Here in Perth non-smokers have the majority of dining and drinking areas. The majority of bars now (including those that have alfresco and beer gardens) are completely non-smoking. When I finally, finally, FINALLY, find a bar that will let me have a cigarette outside, while caressing a pint I will NOT apologise for this. If people really feel that strongly about non-smoking then I would firmly and politely suggest that they piss off to one of the hundreds of places where I am not allowed and leave me at the one bar out of 100 where I am welcome.

I'm no fan of smoke but I'd never say that smokers are disgusting. I'll have to admit, kissing a smoker wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm glad that smoking are forbidden in some places but mostly it's about respect. Some have it, some don't. It's not decided by you being a smoker or not. I got friends that smoke. They know I don't like the smoke so they try and get/keep it away from me. I don't treat my body the best, neither do they.

Don't have anything to say, but this is excellent so thought I would quote it 🙂

One is an action, one is a consequence. Would it be fair for them not to eat in public and smokers aren't allowed to smoke in public? Underground smoking clubs and "bad food" restuarants. 😀 How are we going to do with everything ugly (be it humans, buildings etc) and smelly in the world. It'll always bug someone. And worst of all, we all got different taste. We'll never have a good solution.

You're basically a comic genius. Please perform a skit for me.

Here it's actually been talk of extra tax on "bad" food. Not sure how serious, but since we have it on tobacco and alcohol who knows where it ends up. If we get it, a lot of people will probably don't like it. Give it a decade or three. It usually take time to adjust to changes. I'm not against it.

I would stand behind a decision like this 100%. One of the main reasons that people eat such shit food is that it's cheap and easy. I think it is the governments responsibility to make it difficult. The government have no qualms about making smoking anti-social and highlighting the dangers. Why do they refuse to do the same with junk food?

About the $100 a week I'm feeling slow. Can you expand on that?

Taking into consideration the amount of taxes I pay per week on purchasing cigarettes basically.

I apologize if I'm just talking nonsense. My head has been even more messed up the last week.

It made perfect sense. One of my favourite posts on the subject here 🙂

I actually do agree and understand that I am being overly judgemental in my wording towards fat-fat-fatties. I was doing it intentionally to try and garner a reaction from people to highlight the way smokers are talked about.

I actually do believe that all people (obese, smokers, drinkers, drug abusers) deserve respect and understanding and I will always be the first in line to honour this. What frustrates me is the amount of people that are willing to deliver respect and understanding towards overweight people but then turn around in the same sentence and express disgust and a complete lack of willingness to even listen to my reasons for smoking.

I agree, that most people settle for crap food because it's cheap and easy. A lot of people aren't aware of tasty and healthy alternatives. However...it makes perfect sense to me that the government would focus on not allowing people to smoke in some public places/making the dangers clear more than they focus on making the public aware of healthy food/making it easier to obtain. Smoking is more dangerous than eating food that is bad for you because it can affect people around you. If my grandma eats a burger in front of me, I could care less. If she smokes near me, I don't like it. As you know, smoking can cause lung cancer. Second hand smoke can too. Also, not all people are overweight solely because of unhealthy food. It's a free country, if you want to smoke, so be it. If someone wants to clog their arteries, so be it. Go for it. I don't agree with doing either...but it is not my business. However, if you smoke right next to me or shove a burger down my throat, we're gonna have a problem.

Smoking is a bad habit (as is eating crap food all the time...imo), but you enjoy it so who cares? You are aware of the dangers and you have the right to make the decision to do it or not to. I don't find smokers disgusting, and I don't find overweight people disgusting either. As long as you're respectful when you smoke...who cares?

Well you seemed offended when I said that the smoke disgusts me...and I don't understand why. I don't find you gross for smoking, but the actual cloud of smoke isn't pleasant haha. I also find the smell of bacon frying horrible...so maybe I'm just a freak 😉. It's strange because I used to find the smell of smoke pleasant, maybe because my grandma used to, but then one day I just couldn't stand it. Weird.

I love that you intentionally cut out the "as you know" to make me seem like a condescending bitca. clever :D
I don't smoke, never tried. I am certainly not disgusted by it, but I'd just like it to be done away from my general area. I hate second hand smoke. If you want to smoke then that's your choice, but just have the decency to keep it to yourself.

No. My whole family does and hearing them cough up their lungs for years kind of put me off the idea to be honest. I've tried it a couple of times but it's not for me. I do like shisha though, (which is flavoured tobacco stuff smoked through a pipe) but I only do that at festivals (as well as the 'other' stuff once in a blue moon). Supposedly it's a bit healthier than regular stuff but either way I'd rather not do anything to damage my throat if I can help it. I'm a singer so I have to keep my voice in tiptop shape. Plus it's just too expensive to bother with, I'd rather spend my money on something that helps me like green tea.

It's an individual choice but I think anyone who smokes should be aware of the health consequences when they start. If you end up getting lung cancer from it, it can't be that much of a surprise really and although obviously it's terrible if it happens and non-smokers get it too, if you smoke you'll know you've played a part in getting yourself into that state. Personally I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I let that happen (also why I don't drink too much or eat too much junk food), it already breaks my heart a bit that my little brother smokes even after seeing what it's done to other members of my family.

I used to but when I moved out my apartment block forbade smoking indoors and I wouldn't want to walk down a flight of stairs to smoke so a gave up and never started up again 🙂

I don't look down on people for doing what makes them happy. I think it's horribly obtuse and callous to think you are better than someone because you don't smoke.

You don't know who that person really is, what's going on in their head, or why they choose to smoke., and you have no right whatsoever to dictate to them what they can and cannot do with their own body. You most certainly do NOT have the right to make someone feel like a bad person for it either, that is just RUDE.

I do not smoke, I do find the smell enjoyable though. I have no problem with people smoking, what people do with their body is their choice. Alcohol is also not the greatest for you. But many people are not on the band wagon to get rid of that when many people are killed from drunk drivers and other alcohol related things. So why should smokers be condemned? This double standard for these two potentially dangerous drugs is not fair or fun.
