I don't look down on people for doing what makes them happy. I think it's horribly obtuse and callous to think you are better than someone because you don't smoke.

You don't know who that person really is, what's going on in their head, or why they choose to smoke., and you have no right whatsoever to dictate to them what they can and cannot do with their own body. You most certainly do NOT have the right to make someone feel like a bad person for it either, that is just RUDE.

Nobody is making anyone feel like a bad person (at least on purpose) but it doesn't matter why you or anyone smoke. No matter the reason it doesn't make smoking (harming your body) any less of a stupid thing to do. Because self harm, all forms of self harm is bad no matter the reason why they do it.

People can do whatever they want to their own bodies. Smoke, eat poorly, not eat at all, all kinds of drugs, it's their body, nobody elses, but unless their goal is to be EXTREMELY unhealthy smoking IS stupid. Cigarettes have no positives. It's all negative. If someone is smoking to relax it's not worth it when they could end up with the lungs of an 80 year old at 35. I know friends (my sister being one of them) in their early 20's that cough! They sound cats spitting up furballs in the mornings. It's not healthy, it's not natural, it's not smart. Young people shouldn't be coughing unless they're ill. Period.

If you feel like a bad person for others stating the opinions on cigarettes than that's you're own problem. Nobody is attacking you. Don't take peoples posts personally because everyone that dislikes smoking dislikes it for their own reasons: The Smell or taste or that it's bad for you or because they lost a loved one because of it.

I agree with the last part, it's not supposed to be a personal dig but we are allowed to explain why we don't like it.

No matter the reason for you being judgemental and condescending... Doesn't mean you're any less of a stupid thing to do.

I do not smoke, I do find the smell enjoyable though. I have no problem with people smoking, what people do with their body is their choice. Alcohol is also not the greatest for you. But many people are not on the band wagon to get rid of that when many people are killed from drunk drivers and other alcohol related things. So why should smokers be condemned? This double standard for these two potentially dangerous drugs is not fair or fun.

Alcohol is a big thing here as well though. The UK has a massive binge drinking problem and there's constantly talk of putting minimum pricing on alcoholic products and clamping down on underage drinking, etc. Plus there's been adverts showing how drinking too much can affect your health, much like smoking. So I wouldn't say it's necessarily a double standard.

I noticed that you didn't include alcohol in your argument. Alcohol causes more deaths and problems than smoking, so why isn't alcohol banned from public places or at all for that matter?

A lot of people tend to ignore the fact that Alcohol cause just as many health problems, including mental health problems. It also impairs your judgement to think correctly.

Cigarettes do not cause men to beat their wives, parents to beat their children, or people to die in drunken car crashes. Alcohol causes more deaths of non users than second hand smoke ever did.

You can think it's okay for calling someone stupid for their choices, but it's not.

You can say you weren't intentionally trying to make someone feel bad for smoking, but you were. Telling someone that they are stupid for doing something in an attempt to make them stop, is doing just that. Call it what you want, but that is the truth.

I didn't say anything about alcohol because the topic of this thread wasn't about alcohol , but I agree with you fully. Alcohol is worse and i'm totally against it. Why isn't alcohol banned? I don't know. Maybe because there would be riots or something, i'm not sure. If I were in control of a country i'd ban it day one, and anyone who didn't like it would have to live without it or move somewhere else 😛

I wasn't trying to make anyone feel bad by saying I think smoking is stupid nor was I saying they were stupid in any attempt to make them stop. I have no interest in helping people stop smoking. If they want to smoke then more power to them, but in my opinion it's just another form of self harm which I do think is very stupid. I'm fine with smokers as long as they don't smoke around to me.

Alcohol and cigarettes aren't banned because away too much money is made from them. Even if they were banned, they'd just be made illegally and become even more expensive than they already are :P
I don't want to be in the middle of this but... Drunk driving is illegal. I don't think alcohol or cigarettes should be illegal. I just wish people would use them in a manner that is socially responsible. I appreciate people who drink and take a cab home as much as I do people who have the courtesy not to smoke in doorways. The cigarettes or the alcohol are not the problem... Reckless and discourteous people are. It's your body and your choices as long as they don't impact my safety or my family's safety.

I consider myself to be a respectful smoker. If it bothers someone, I will move away from them. I don't smoke in front of public doorways, I move off to the side of the building. I don't smoke around my children either.

I just wish everyone was courteous when it came to their bad habits.

Oh, and just to put it out there: I personally don't care if people smoke in some bars. I can choose whether I want to go to a bar that allows smoking and therefore control my exposure or lack thereof to the smoke... If I go out with my family or anytime now since I'm pregnant, I choose places that are non-smoking inside. No big deal and no lack of options!

I think that's an excellent attitude for a non smoker to have. Karma.
Maybe it's just me but doing something stupid or bad doesn't automatically make someone a stupid or bad person. To constantly repeat the same stupid/bad thing doesn't seem very smart but you don't always know why it happens. Nobody's perfect. Eating unhealthy, smoke, gamble away your money, shop things you can't afford or drink too much isn't smart. Drink and drive is even worse, in my mind. Do anyone do this on purpose to pay the consequences? Doubt it.

Also, just read this and I think you calling people who self harm 'stupid' is incredibly insensitive. I know for a fact that there are members on this board that struggle every single day battling against mental diseases that have come close to taking people lives. I'm more than willing to go to some extremes, and I'm more than willing for you to call me stupid. Call my friends stupid because they suffer a mental disorder and that is not okay. I think an apology is most definitely in order.

woah woah woah. I miss that part.
I am only bothered when my family smokes around me. Though it sucked when sometimes my clothes smelled like smoke when I went to school. =\ But out in public I don't mind because I just stay away from it. 😛

Okay, I understand that it is just your 'opinion', but you have have no right to say that it is another form of self harm. If you knew someone or ever had self harmed, you would not even dare to say this. This is insensitive, hurtful and just plain cruel. Calling people who self harm stupid? I am sorry, but what is wrong with you? Do you honestly think that people who self harm chose to do it because they WANT to?

I will not let fat people around my child.

What was your intention with this comment? If your intention was to get me upset or other such reaction then it didn't work. Grow up.

If your intention was to simply have me reply to your post then congratulations, cait FTW.

If your intention was to legitimately draw a parallel between second hand consequences of a persons obesity and second hand consequences of smoking, I would have say - fail. As I am entirely sure you are aware, based on the intelligence I've seen you display in various other conversations, a person's obesity, whether it something they have has a hand in or not, doesn't directly affect the health of my child. Smoking around her and/or touching her after recently smoking does. It's not just about her lungs (although infants her age with asthma or RSV can be put in the hospital within minutes. ) There are other health risks (for example, her immune system will be significantly affected and it will be harder for her to fight common illnesses such as ear or sinus infections.)

If your intention was something I have missed entirely, please enlighten me.

I don't smoke, tried it when I was a teen and thought it was disgusting!!! 😱
It makes your clothes smell and your teeth yellow and obviously it's really bad for your health urrghhhh 😱

No, I don't.
I don't have anything against people who do smoke, I mean personally, but I hate it when someone's smoking while standing right next to me.

As this is clearly a sensitive issue I would like to urge all of you to be respectful of other peoples choices and opinions or we will have to close. Feel free to voice your own, but be polite and respectful about it, being intentionally provocative or veering off-topic is not pertinent to a question as to whether or not you smoke.

Thank you
🙂

I'm not saying sorry for anything because I said nothing that needs an apology. I stated my opinion that I think smoking is stupid and you clearly can't handle that. You're the one that RANDOMLY out of the blue attacked over weight people more than once on this thread saying you wouldn't even let your kids near a fat person when Kryptonite said she wouldn't let a smoker around her child. Which is a bit harsh, but understandable. No mother wants her little kid in a room full of second hand smoke.

On the first page NOBODY said ANYTHING about ANYONE. Only saying they dislike smoking or find it disgusting, but you came along and took it as some kind of personal attack on you "Oh my god, they hate smoking, that clearly must mean they hate me as a person too!" So you went off attacking overweight people and then gave Fredikins bad rep while replying with "Well I don't find smoke itself gross but I do find ugly and fat people revolting. It makes me PHYSICALLY ill to stare at people imaging what is going on in their bowels and arteries. Eww." When all she did was say she disliked smoking and gave very good personal reasons for her view on it.

Okay, I think that's about enough of that.

If someone wants to start a new thread where people can actually discuss the topic at hand without turning it into a fight with personal attacks and overreactions, please feel free to do so.

Not every thread on this board needs to turn into a fight - and people need to stop looking for them where they don't need to exist.

And by the way, after sitting in the hospital last week watching my uncle die of lung cancer after he smoked for 40 years, I can say with pretty good certainty that smoking IS stupid. Whether you choose to do it or not knowing that is your own business.
