So the new new Doctor Who started tonight - new Doctor, new companion, new showrunner.

I loved it! I wasn't in the 'no David Tennant, no watch' camp but I was a little apprehensive about Matt Smith.

But he was excellent, I really enjoyed the opening episode and the preview of the episodes to come looks fantastic.

Did anyone else watch? Or plan to watch?

I watched it!!! And oh my, I loved it! I basically agree with everything you said - I loved David Tennant to bits but Matt Smith made a fantastic first impression on me. He has a real spark and I think he did an excellent job at it. I even thought Amy was good - which is a miracle because ever since Rose i've been very reluctant to let myself like any of the female assistants, but she looks set for great things 🙂

I have so much more to say about it but i can't work out how to do spoiler tags so i'll keep schmut for now.

I really really reeeeally cannot wait until the next episode. You can probably tell i'm still a tad over-excited right now :silly:

I am also over-excited about it. 😀 I came online to capslock!squee at my friend about it, lol.

I agree about Amy (btw, love that the new assistant has my name, ha) - she seems like she'll be a good companion.

I really liked her introduction as a little girl, and that the 'raggedy Doctor' was her imaginary friend growing up.

Oh! Her boyfriend (fiancé?) Rory made a good first impression, too. I hope he'll be back.

Not really sure what else to say about the ep right now. I'm still in incoherent squee-mode, I think I'll have to re-watch the episode.

I know what you mean about 'incoherent squee-mode' - I know I have lots to say but its proving to be kinda hard to put it into words, but i'll try!

I agree it was so cute when the camera glanced over the little model toys of Amelia and the Doctor that she'd made over the years. And how when anyone she knew met him, they all went 'it's really him - the raggedy doctor?!'.

I liked Rory too 🙂 I saw a glimpse of him in the preview montage, so he'll be back. I wonder if he's the one Amy was going to marry or if they're going to introduce a twist and it's Jeff (the laptop guy) or someone else entirely? Regardless, it's nice that they're already introducing the doctor's little 'earth team', like Mickey, Jackie and Wilf before them!

I also love that they're giving the show a little cheeky/dirty streak. Not so much that the kids would notice anything, but putting those little raunchier jokes in gave it a bit of a kick.
i.e Jeff's 'internet history' 😉 and the whole kissogram idea
They're obviously trying to push boundaries with this new version and I like it 🙂

I can't wait to see what they throw at us next 🙂
 
I really liked this episode and I'm not a big doctor who fan. I like the idea of the show but since the re-launch it never really drew me in. I never really liked Rose or Eccleston's Doctor. I liked Tennant but never watched because I just didn't get the appeal of Rose. I really enjoyed it when he was with Martha but then she was gone. Then I didn't watch again until tonight.
It came across as a fresh start for the show with two new leads that I instantly liked, so I think I will watch it every week now. And hope I will become a Who fan because I do like the idea a lot. I thought
the imaginary friend angle was nicely done.
. Smith's doctor seems a little less quirky and more bad-ass which I liked. "Basically, run". Amy has a nice mix of characters around her and a hint of sadness to her character,
especially the young version
but it's mixed nicely with a fun, flirty side
Watching the Doctor change seemed so un-doctor who, which again I liked. 😀
plus she's all kinds of pretty.😀 So here's hoping I'll enjoy this season, a great first step anyway.
And it's always nice to see Annette Crosbie too. 🙂
 
I loved it! I was apprehensive about Smith at first, but he completely blew away all my worries. He won me over at "Fish Custard". 😀 Amy was a lot of fun too, and not too hard on the eyes either. There were some great one-liners too - "You're Scottish, fry me something!"

One thing I didn't like was the new theme tune/titles. They felt completely wrong and lacked the same punch as they used to. It'll take me a while to get used to it.

Was it just me or did it look like he was eating sponge cakes instead of fish fingers? If so, im very dissapointed :P It was funny as hell though!
Oh yeah, I wasn't that keen on the new opening credits and the new theme tune. It felt rather... lacklustre? Plus, I didn't like the font they used for the actor's names. Haha, I feel so geeky, not liking the font. 😛

But, I did really like the new logo. Nice, clean lines but with a retro feel to it.

Oh and speaking of new designs - what did you all think of the new TARDIS interior and exterior?

I really liked it. Again - nice and fresh but with a retro twist. And I'm excited to hear the Doctor talk about the other rooms and actually see platforms and levels and staircases leading to other rooms.
Even though you knew that the TARDIS was bigger than just the console room in the Nine/Ten era, it really did seem as though that was it and they just spent all their time there.

Now with the Doctor having mentioned the library and swimming pool, I kinda hope we get to see some of the other areas of the TARDIS.

I'm so looking forward to the rest of the series. You're right frankie - it's a fresh start and I for one really like that, in a couple of the tenth Doctor specials (such as the xmas 2008 ep) I felt it was going slightly stale, so this new start is good.

(It's difficult to work out what I should spoiler tag and what I shouldn't, lol.)
 
I didn't think I was going to like Matt Smith. I've seen him in a lot of things we've watched in school, and he seemed an alright actor, but I didn't think that I could enjoy him as the Doctor, especially after David Tennant. However, I was pleasantly surprised; he did a really good job. I like the new assistant, Amy; I like her better than Martha and Donna, but she's not a patch on Rose. My Mum was in the same boat, she wasn't looking forward to seeing the new series, at all, and wasn't sure whether to even watch the first episode. However, we both really enjoyed it and can't wait for the rest of the series. From the clips shown it looks really good. I had to cover my eyes when the Weeping Angels were shown as being in a later episode, though, they're one of the few things in TV that scare the crap out of me.

When I saw the tardis all i could think was 70's disco! It was like something off the set of an Austin Powers movie, but I kinda liked it - it looks a lot more interesting than the last one. I may have been wrong but I think I saw some pebble-dash interior? That's a bit weird but who knows.. Like xaphania said, i'd like to see more of the tardis too. It'd be interesting to see other dimensions to it 🙂

I loved that part - When these two get together (which they're evidently going to, in my opinion) I reckon it's going to be a lot spicier than the romances we're used to on this show.. Which is no bad thing 😀

I was the same. The Weeping Angels are the most terrifying things i've ever seen. And they're coming back :eek2:
Guess who's going to be hiding behind the sofa...
 
I finally watched it on the wonderful BBC Iplayer, and have surprised myself by really enjoying it. I thought it was a well written episode with some nice light hearted moments and the foundation for a relationship between the doctor and his new companion. I think Matt Smith is a good actor, my one complaint would be that his style is a little too similar to that of David Tennant. I think maybe sombody completely different might have been more interesting.

This is the first time I watch the show as it airs. I didn't start watching the show until a few months ago. First I wasn't sure if I was gonna continue watching because I thought I'd just be disappointed but decided I needed to give Matt a chance. Took me some time to get used to him but by the end I didn't care much. Even if I'd prefered DT instead. But I'm sure he'll get even better as the season continues so for now I don't have a problem having him as The Doctor.

The most promising since the show returned I'd easily say. Even more excited now that I've seen that.

Actually Martha is my favourite with Rose a close second and Donna quite far back even if I'm liking her better the second time I watched her season (I'm in a middle of a rewatch). Amy feels good but it's too early to judge after one episode.

I couldn't stop smiling when I saw them. Love Blink so it's great to see them return. It'll be interesting to see how they fit into a story this time. Oh and
River Song
will return in the same episode it seems.
 
I didn't continue to watch Dr. Who after the first season, but I did catch the Weeping Angels episode when it aired. So I'm gonna check out the episode that they return in.
 
Thanks for not spoiling it, as we'll get to see it stateside on the 17th(if you've got BBC America)..

However, I have taken a look at the opening sequence...and does it EVER kick butt! The theme music takes a little getting used to, but it does keep the "time tunnel" look of the last 2 DW opening themes(and improves on it, too....lightning being apparent, etc.)...

So what did everyone think of episode two - 'The Beast Below'?

I liked the concept, the idea of having to temporarily set up the country on a spaceship, but a little of the execution didn't really work for me.

I wasn't keen on Liz Ten - and I know Sophie Okonado was nominated for an Oscar, but her performance didn't impress me all that much.

I thought it was an okay second episode - though I admit I was expecting more from Stephen Moffat as a writer - but in my mind it's on a par with those other future episodes (New Earth, Gridlock) in that it was only 'okay'.

Having said that, the performances from Gillan and Smith were excellent. I really like him as the Doctor and Amy continues to impress.

Loved the bit at the end, with Churchill ringing up the TARDIS and asking for help. Dalek's next week - looks good!
 
If Amy keeps this up she'll end up being my favourite companion. Matt works well as the doctor but I liked him more in the first episode. But he still got time to impress me. The episode itself confused me a bit. I probably need subtitles to (hopefully) get a real grip on it. I liked the ending especially. And I know it's kind of silly but the feeling the whale gave me made me really liked it. Maybe I just have a soft spot for friendly and helpful creatures that got a good connection with kids.

The next episode sure seem to put a twist on things. Can't wait.
 
Speaking of subtitles, am I the only one having some trouble understanding what Amy is saying at times?

The exchange on the tongue, for example. Both she and the Doctor repeated the word 'tongue' several times, then said something about being inside its mouth. I couldn't understand what they were saying until I asked my sister.

Although it could be a problem with the background music, as opposed to Amy's accent... I've noticed this before in Doctor Who, and it doesn't seem to have got any better with this series - the music is always far too loud over the dialogue. It was the same in Torchwood. Sort it out, BBC!

Sadly I have trouble a lot of the time in this show, not only Amy. I love David but he talks, at least as the doctor, very fast and not like I would understand everything they say in the show anyway. So subtitles sure helps me a lot. I noticed the same thing watching the UK version of The office. Took me a good while to get used to it.
