Does anyone else *hate* Cordelia/ Angel as a couple/ potential couple

I'm a huge fan of Cangel. I thought it was by far one of the most realistic romances on the show. I also loved the way it highlighted just how much Cordelia had changed. Just look at her initial reaction to Angel, and then again at You're Welcome.

I should make my own fanclub with all the people here, lol
I don't get all this 'after Connor' nonsense.

The relationship started, pretty much, after Doyle died, when these two characters started to rely and depend on each other, realising their strengths and weaknesses.
It grew into a love but it took a while, and outsiders to say something, for them to realise they did love each other.

Granted when she returns in season 4, there is the 'Connor' stuff, but thats not Cordelia.

Cordelia comes back with a vengeance in season 5 and we have the episode we always wanted regarding their relationship (except for the dying).

Its not Connor and Cordelia in season 4, so why does that factor in to a dislike of Angel and Cordy, which was explored more prominently for 2 and a half years before Connor even turned up?

Agreed with one exception. It wasn't their love that grew post Doyle, it was their friendship. They seemed to be so close as friends that the relationship (at least for me) felt forced and sudden, I never saw it 'grow' as you say. I saw great friends and then the writers wanting to spice things up.

Okay. Deep breath. Everything is alright. Yes, you are alone on the "they were just friends", or at least I'm not on board.

In my current X-Files obsession I would like to answer with a quote:

SCULLY: Well, it seems to me that the best relationships-- the ones that last-- are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship. You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been flicked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend is... suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with.

That said, I think that's exactly what Cangel was about. This is why I see the epic love and perfectness for each other in them, not in Bangel or some other ship.

Cangel is disgusting. Really truly "hey you're my brother I'm your sister let's do it" kinda disgusting. They don't feel right, it wasn't believable, and I never saw them as more than friends. To me, Cangel was forced and, well, for lack of a better word icky.

Aw, I just love your banner! L/A love! Yay!
I don't hate the relationship, but i always felt Cordy could've done much better. She has to live in Buffy's shadow (he mutters Buffy's name in his fantasy of sleeping with Cordelia, ugh), she stood by him through all of the Darla stuff, and he seems to kind of take her for granted unless her life is in mortal danger. I loved the Cordelia/Doyle relationship, shortlived as it was, and kept waiting for the writers to bring Cordelia a relationship that equaled that chemistry but it never happened. Don't even get me started on how they destroyed Cordelia's character in Season 4 (Joss's worst mistake ever, IMO). I thought for a while in Season 2 that Cordy would get with Gunn as I think they could have gone together better.

I wasn't a fan, but it doesn't have anything to do with wanting to see Angel with Buffy. I agree with Silum. I could have liked them as a couple, but it never felt like there was anything between them and then one day the writers sat down and said, "Well, she's the leading lady on the show. They should be involved somehow!" If they'd built it up naturally, I think I could have gone for it. But instead it's like there's nothing there and all of a sudden she's Angel's world a few episodes into season three. Also, I'd already watched most of Buffy by the time I saw season three of Angel (I think season seven was all I hadn't seen) and I'd pretty much gotten to the point where I understood how Joss ends relationships. I know people get excited over the ships in his shows, but I think his reluctance to EVER let his characters be happy in a relationship is also a kind of weakness in his writing. If I know everything is just going to turn to crap, how can I invest in a romance? Why am I going to care when it inevitably does fall apart? This is the same reason I've never really gotten into the Victor/Sierra romance he's began trying to sell on Dollhouse. But it felt particularly true with Angel and Cordelia because Angel as a character pretty much can't have love. It isn't because he fundamentally doesn't deserve it, but it is his curse. He can't experience perfect happiness. And all of the reasons he walked away from his relationship with Buffy would have applied to Cordelia as well. They couldn't get too close physically. He could never give her the kind of life she might want in the future, etc. So, to me, Joss trying to sell this relationship was kind of like a Broker trying to sell you a stock they've already assured you is going to lose money. And once the writers decided to try and sell this relationship, Cordelia's character started to suffer. In the first two seasons, she was the vision girl, she was funny, she was tactless. By the middle to end of season three, I just saw her as the love interest.

Cordy wasn't good enough for Angel. He could do better. 😉

She sacrificed a lot for him. She became part demon to help HIM fight the good fight and that eventually led to her death. Not to mention she used her last favor from the Powers to get Angel back on track and help him see the light again. I really don't see how Cordelia wasn't good enough for him. Angel is actually the one who wasn't good enough for her.

Lol, i just said that cos im not really a cordy fan. ;)
I loved Angel and Cordelia together. Not as much as I loved Angel and Buffy together, but I did really root for them as a couple. They went through a LOT together on both Buffy and Angel, and they brought out the best in each other. Angel helped Cordelia evolve from the spoiled, selfish little bitca she was in Buffy and the early seasons of Angel into this wonderful woman who was ever-giving and self-sacrificing to help save the world. And Cordelia helped Angel realize that he can't stay locked away from the world all the time and that he should never lose sight of the good fight.
Awww.... this thread makes me want to go watch "You're Welcome" and have a good cry. LOL

I loved Cordy and Angel as very good close friends who obviously had a lot of respect for one another but once the romance came in I didn't like it too much. I thought it was the obvious path both of them would go down especially when you could see it slowly happening in season 3. But once Cordy slept with Connor it put me off Angel and Cordy getting together as I found it too creepy, but in season 5 when she kissed him goodbye I thought that was a really sweet way to part them both.

You know I find it ironic how some people say Connor's the reason they got turned off Cangel when its the exact opposite for me. You see that's why I loved the Cangel relationship so much it was a grown up relationship well partially because of Connor.

Cordy stepped up to take on the mother role which made me develop a new found respect for her. I'll admit perhap they should added some romantic chemistry between Cordy and Angel to place the ground work for season 3. But part from that I really liked their relationship I mean throughout that entire season both proved how much they cared for one another.

My only problem with their relationship was season 4 because well Cordy didn't have her memory and she was then posessed. I just kept thinking Cordy would NEVER act like that towards Angel she would be right at home there in the hotel and never choose to live with Connor over Angel.

I LOVE Angel and Cordelia as a couple. They work so well together on Angel, and it just seems right. Plus, who would Angel be with since Buffy and Spike are meant to be? 😛

Exactly!
I adore Cordy. Angel is my favourite Buffyverse character. Together? World of no!

Angel and Cordy's friendship, I thought, was the cutest thing ever. It was so enjoyable to watch and it just worked but when they started to try and make it romantic...my head exploded.

There was no chemistry, at least not coupley chemistry. It was forced. I always felt like it was trying to push a square shaped block through a round hole. Not happening.

I always felt that once the shows were put on different networks and the oppertunity for crossovers fell away both shows kinda spazzed out trying to find suitable romantic replacements for Buffy and Angel, and it never really worked for either.

Personally, I'm glad that there never was any real romance between the two. It made it so much better that he saved himself for Nina.

i'm okay with tv couple who got together a while after being friends if there was flirting between them or if one of them had a crush on the other. Neither happened with Cordy and Angel in the first two seasons of Angel. They had absolutely no sexual chemistry together.

I tend to think - Angel & Cordy basically prove why some friends should never get romantically involved. As friends they are completely believeable. Since they been thru lots of stuff together. But as possible lovers - they aren't remotely believeable.

Buffy Summers
Buffy Summers
Good point :)
Though I am a self-proclaimed Bangel, the truth of the matter is that Angel's subsequent relationships with Cordelia and Nina are counterintuitive to his entire rationale for abandoning Buffy in the first place. He left her because he did not feel worthy of her, he desperately wanted her to transcend his limitations.

So what is his justification for the Cordelia and Nina relationships? Don't get me wrong; I find Angel's affection for Cordelia to be touching and logical, given how close the two became. And Nina seemed nice enough. But what why did he attempt to start something with either of them?

Was he so desperate for companionship that he abandoned his nobility? Did he feel that they didn't deserve some normalcy?

It's fun to speculate.

You make a very valid point.
I can't see them as a couple. I just can't. I can see them as friends but absolutely nothing more. I never understood it when people said they'd make a great couple. Still, this does not mean I hate them.
