Personally I have always felt that Angel made the decision that Buffy couldn't. It wasn't so much about nobility but doing what he had to. Throught the a large chuck of season 3 Buffy had tried, several times, to seperate herself from Angel. She tried to leave him, and found she couldn't. Joyce's words to him always stand out to me "I hope you can make the hard decision", he did and Buffy backed him, or at least understood why he was doing it. Buffy had learned the hard way that want and need are too very different thing.

Honestly, I don't doubt Angel's love for Buffy or his ultimate sacrifice in leaving her for a normal life.
The question is: why did he then try to establish a relationship with someone else?
Becuase it presented no threat to his soul? Which, when all is said and done, is the real reason why Buffy and Angel had to seperate. White picket fences, picnics and sunsets can be done without but the parameters of the curse were vague at best, Angel had no idea if making love to Buffy was the only trigger. As their relationship was being redefined how was he to know if in turn he would find a new way of achieving perfect happiness with her? If they found a way to express their love for each other without sex God knows what could have happened.
I don't think Angel ever really entertained the idea that he would feel anything remotely close to his love for Buffy with anyone else and so it would be safe for him to embark on other relationships.

Cordy has never been in favorite with me and only started to make her mark with me once she'd hit ats, although she'd still looped on annoying, I could tolerate her with Doyle and Angel. There was such a balance of different character personalites that it seemed okay to me but as soon as the romantic front hit. I just felt the need to rip Joss's head from his shoulders.
Agreed. There scenes just looked so stiff or maybe it was the fact that my eyes were screwed shut so tightly, trying to block the atrocity from view while cursing the writer gods. *shrug*
Thats the truth, David. G even confirmed it but saying that SMG couldn't make a few specific crossovers, forcing them to improvise.

i agree with those who just don't like Cordelia that much.
seemed absolutely ridiculous that Angel would become attracted to her. and her becoming a 'higher being'?! gimme a break!
Nina (the werewolf) was a WAY better fit and it's a shame they didn't do more with her character.

Maybe if I had seen it play out it the couple would have grown on me enough to like it. But I've always thought them to be better off as just friends, there never seemed to be any chemistry between the characters for me. Their falling in love seemed a little forced.

I didn't hate it, but it was one of those things that you figured would happen since its TV and male & females characters seem to always end up together no matter what... but I wasn't happy when it happened. Well, it barely happened if at all, but still... the feelings were there, and they never felt right. It didn't make sense to me that those two characters would have those kinds of feelings for each other. The friendship made sense, but the romance was forced.

I don't really mind Cangel, but at the time it felt like the writers just put them together cos she was the only female around, and Angel needed to have a love interest. That was kinda annoying. I loved You're Welcome and in general I didn't have a problem with it, but I'm sort of glad they didn't get together properly.
I liked Cangel and disliked them. I thought Angel and Cordy would have had a good relationship and it would have been nice to see where it went but Cordy would never be Buffy for me either. I'm glad they never got together because the whole thing did seem forced.
Ugh, I understand the dislike you have that Cordy became a higher being. All of those scenes with her in the clouds? Yikes. One of her more annoying moments.

Oh come on, that's like Bangels/Spuffies hating the other camp because they can't st and Angel/Spike respectively. And what does that have to do with anything?
Just because YOU don't like her, why wouldn't Angel get attracted to her? Same goes for the whole higher being thing, does your dislike for a character seriously degrade that character in so far that the only thing they 'earn' is being a single, unemployed loser?
you're post assumes that i was judging Cangel based purely on my own distaste for Cordelia. the truth is, the reason it bothered me so much is how AGAINST TYPE it seemed for Angel to suddenly want to get horizontal with her.
to answer the above question from Angel's perspective:
... because she's vapid, annoying, unfunny, untalented, pushy, fickle, morally ambiguous, cold, dull, style-impaired and physically vulnerable (in a way that a super-strong slayer is not, which i'm thinking would greatly affect the sex-life).

Again, this is not Angel saying those things, it still reflects your opinion on Cordy! Like, Cordy works for him, why would Angel be calling her untalented? Would he ever even speak to her if he thought of her exactly like you described?
Not to mention the sex-life, by the way, since, lest not forget, there's a certain curse greatly impairing Angel with a certain blonde slayer anyway.
I'm not saying your opinion on Cordy and Cangel is unvalid, but please don't turn your subjetive likes and dislikes into facts, because that's just not the way it works. You don't like Cordy and therefore also have a certain aversion for Cangel, fair enough, we all experience that for the occasional couple, but that doesn't mean that dislike has anything to do with the actual couple! Like mentioned above, the whole 'Angel perspective' is just an 'I hate Cordy' statement from you!
I've got a feeling that my first response this thread was before I'd began my rewatch of Angel. I've only got up to three cos I'm a lowly student and don't have the boxsets yet, but I still, like AS and BS, find the whole thing rather forced.
I absolutely love them for the friendship that they have. They both supported each other immensely and I found that really endearing but I to be fair, I was a bit miffed that it wasn't left like that. It's so rare to see a really good friendship between members of the opposite sex stay as a friendship. (The only example I can think of right now where this does happen is Lucas and Haley in One Tree Hill 😛 Although I suppose to some extent it's similar to Buffy and Xander but there was still 'feelings' there initially). I would have much preferred to see this relationship stay that way, and that is all I can take from that 'ship and because of that I find any more 'romantic/sexual' scenes between them rather uncomfortable to watch.
Similarly, I find the 'friendship' between Spike and Buffy rather touching but I just don't enjoy watching them as a 'couple.' I would have found myself much more invested in Buffy finding a solid friendship with a vampire as to another more 'romantic' partnership which as I've said before did nothing but produce 'really Joss, you're going there again?' from me.
