All this discussions about different 'ships makes me wonder.
Am I the only one that don't really care?

For me is BtVS about the Slayer - Watcher relationship and the friendship between Buffy, Willow and Xander.
That's what makes me watch the show, the humor is another big part of it though...

It's not that I don't want Buffy to have any love interests.
Knowing how much Buffy loved Angel makes the ending of season 2 extremely powerful and it's my favorite season finale.

But it still amaze me how invested people seems to be in that relationship. And if it's not that one it's always some other that is super important.
For me the Buffy - Angel story is more like a great subplot that was very fun for a seson or two.

Have never cared very much for any couple in any show actually.
At times this makes me feel like a cold hearted bastard that's all dead inside, but surely it isn't just me is it?

Nah, not everyone is interested in the relationship aspect of the show.

Yes, I do believe you are alone on that one. 😀 For me, the ship has always made the show. I think that romance drama is a big part of real life, and having that in a show makes the show that much better. Plus, different 'ships are just so fun to discuss and angrily argue about. 🙂

I do agree that the slayer is a very important part of the show, and I am slightly disappointed when they put more into the relationships then the main point of the show, but it doesn't exactly make me dislike the romance.

Like, I think of a real romance as more of a strong friendship with someone that you want to be close to. And friendship was a large part of the show. And humor is great of course, and what could be funnier than watching Anya and Xander dance around in OMWF? IMO, all these things go hand in hand.

I think that if you took away the romance, you wouldn't have a real, true show. You have to some romance in there somewhere; It's just real life.

Wow, you don't really like any couple in the show? That's amazing, sk73. 😀 I've always thought that there was something for everyone, and I myself like many couples with the same person, like Spuffy, Spangel, and Sprusilla. 🙂 But to each their own. :grouphug:

Lol, I doubt you're a "cold- hearted bastard". I'm guessing that you're either just not a romance person, or the 'ships in Buffy just don't appeal to you very much. There have been many shows where I dislike all the ships, too. Doesn't necessarily mean anything bad.

For me, though I adore the main plot of "it's not about right, it's not about wrong, it's about power", I don't think I could get quite as into it without the romance. So I guess I don't share your view there, but, oh well I guess. 😀

I actually agree, that's why i never really post in ship threads.

The only ship that i have really cared for is Xanya.
I was devastated when they broke up.

and i can't and won't make my mind up about supporting either Spangel or Bangel.

As I've loved both in the past.

For me having a favourite ship is like having a favourite character. Sometimes you have one, sometimes you don't. Like falling in love in real life you "fall" for either a character or a ship. It's not something you find by logic. As for Buffy, the show, it's not the ships that makes me watch it. Just something to add. The humour was a big thing for me and a show without ships I could easily take but a show (= Buffy) without humour I had never continued to watch. I never care much for the shipdiscussions in the way that I get upset for real but sometimes it can be fun to "play". 😛 But just like when it comes to characters if I feel that a certain couple gets beaten on a bit too much I don't mind jumping in and defending it.

I honestly couldn't care less about specific ships.

I think each relationship a character has develops and changes them as a person (just as they do in real life) and I appreciate each one for that character at that time in their life.

Sure, there are some ships I prefer to others (like, I dislike Kennedy&Willow and like Willow/Tara) but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching episodes that feature the ships I dislike & this is the only thread in the ships forum I think I've posted on.

The "biggest" discussion is obviously Bangel/Spuffy, but I enjoy each equally and couldn't really care less who Buffy would chose yadayada. Then again the character of Buffy isn't my favourite, maybe it'd be different if it was.

I'm not really a shipper. I like Buffy's relationships with Angel and Spike for their storytelling purposes but I don't particularly care about either. The only relationships I care about on the show are Willow's with Oz and Tara. But I like them both in their own right and don't think that Willow should be with one of them over the other - if that makes sense.

A large part of fandom seems to consist of shipping though - and I'm not only talking about BtVS or AtS either but... everything. Every moderately popular show, movie, book, comic seems to have their different ships (canon or not) and shippers. Sometimes I wonder why that is? Sure, I like some "ships" better than others and might prefer one character over the other but in a larger scale I care about the story more than arguments who's the better match for [insert character here]. (Okay, I might have thrown a tiny little temper tantrum when Spider-Man and Mary Jane got broken up but that was because the story and reason were just so. ugh. incredibly. lame. pathetic. and didn't sense at all.)
I've heard people telling they stopped watching a show just because their ship broke up. This just seems so... silly and petty to me.

Um. Sorry for going OT.

Kay i forgot to mention Willow and oz.

But that's it! Woz and Xanya <3

I am really contradicting myself now.haha.

Um. Sorry for going OT.

I don't mind. Made me remeber the fights/discussions about who Harry Potter should be with. 😀 Or if Leia should end up with Han or Luke. Since this was way before the time of internet and you didn't have a clue what was gonna happen even if it took you a long while to watch the movies. I was right about Harry but dead wrong (for obvious reasons) when it came to Leia.

And as for stop watching a show just because your favourite ship breaks up is beyond me. If for nothing else but for those who know their tv-show history people seem to have a tendency to break up, get back together and so on in all eternity.

Relationships are a huge part of the Buffyverse... and life. They're kind of hard to ignore. I love Spuffy because I feel it adds to the series, as do other explorations into how the characters are feeling about others. Fresley, Spangel, and Woz are the only other three 'ships I really care for though. And sometimes Bangel, but shhhh. ;P

I'm a huge 'shipper in all the TV programmes I watch. And they're usually the conventional/original ones.

However, if my favourite 'ship BROKE UP I wouldn't stop watching but I will admit I've lost interest in shows if a couple have left or something.

E.g. Lucas and Peyton left One Tree Hill - I still watch/keep up to date with it, but its not the same, I've definitely lost interest. I'm actually in love with them as a couple though. 😛

And when Rose left Doctor Who I lost a bit of interest.

I just find relationships really captivating. When I was younger it was all about thinking what it would be like to be in the relationship or to one of them (the girl, obviously!) but now I just find shows that can present to me a relationship that feels real to me, I don't know it just totally grips me.

Saying that, I don't just watch shows for relationships by any means, but they certainly hook me in.

Anyway regarding BTVS, I think the romance and relationships is a really important part of the show but that's not to say you should have a favourite one, at all. It's all just preference isn't it, we're all attracted to different things.

Angel and Cordy was the one I liked most and was interested in. The rest never really drew my attention. I'm more into the characters themselves, not who they are involved with. If they are well rounded characters without the love stuff, I tend to like them more, and even though I really liked them, I always felt that Anya, Oz and Tara were more about the person they were with than being stand alone characters.

I honestly have no more energy to debate Bangel vs Spuffy any more, so please do not let this turn into that topic.

Anyway, my favorite 'ships are: Buffy and Spike. Spuffy has been my favorite ship since Season Two of BtVS. They had such great chemistry, even though they were fighting for almost all of the season. When, in Season Six, they finally got together, I was ecstatic! I often root for the underdog, so to speak, to get the girl. (Example: I hated Dawson/Joey in Dawson's Creek. It was always Pacey/Joey for me.)

Next is Cordelia and Angel. They work so well off each other, and it took them seven years to even take notice in each other sexually. They never got a chance to really develop, but if they had, I'm sure it would have been really worthwhile.

Runner ups: Willow/Tara (And Willow/Oz!), Angel/Darla, Xander/Anya, Fred/Spike, Illyria/Spike)

I'm sure your not completley alone, but you must be very very lonley 😛 I never cared about Angel and Buffy, and I agree that to me at least, they were a sub-plot. Either than that though, I like the ships. I agree with Spikesangel, relationships are a part of life and they are sort of hard to ignore. They were an important part of the show because the characters were so important.

I can't really imagine not being a shipper. With every show I watched, even back when I was little and watching Star Trek, I always had a favourite ship. I guess some people (like me) are just really into romance stuff and see that as the light in every show. Coming back to the Star Tre example, at some point, my faourite couples were what I cared most about on the show, and that's not really what Star Trek is about. So something like Buffy, a show that really throws all these ships at you, naturally attracts shipping I guess. But it's not a bad thing if you're not a shipper, there's other aspects of the show, and different people just like different stuff.

Ok, I have my favorite ship, but I really care about Buffy/Xander/Willow/Giles relationship. They're the core four and always will be. When my friends asked me who's the guy on the show that being with Buffy, I always answered "There're Xander and Willow and they're best friends and main characters. The boyfriends and girlfriends just a little part of the show. The things that matter are how they grew up together and what they had learned in 7 years". And my friends went awe. 😛

There's a friend that even thinks Buffy is a sl*t because she had 3 boyfriends on the show(Thanks God, I didn't mention Scott and Parker to her). I was so angry. She always think that main characters have to be with only one boyfriend or girlfriend. That's what she believes and that's what makes BtVS different from other shows. So I tried to explain something that she'd understand. I said "She dated each guys more than a year so she's not that bad". But she still thinks that way. I really want to slap her. 🙁

And I have to admit that 'Ships' are fun to discuss. But my fav ship, Fuffy is just what I want it to happen. But I know there's little hope. And it's sexy to think about. 😛 But of course, I didn't start to watch BtVS because the ships. I watch it because I love humour and action. And I love it because The Core Four.

Maybe you should have mentioned Joyce and Dawn, or are they also some passing characters with no influence on Buffy's life

Hi five for the 'core four' :) it's the whole friendship that makes buffy.
To be honest, I started watching the show because of SMG. I first saw her in All My Children, and I loved her there. And when I started watching it I found it very good. I don't know, I do love friendship between Buffy/Willow/Xander, and I enjoyed Watcher-Slayer relathionship in first 3 seasons. I don't love show because of the Bangel, or any other 'ship, but that is a big part of show, because every guy/girl the main character had effected them so much.

ubi4soft agrees: Maybe you should have mentioned Joyce and Dawn, or are they also some passing characters with no influence on Buffy's life

Of course Joyce and Dawn had influence on Buffy's life, also did every Big Bads, bad guys and boyfriends and everything that happened around her. That made she became who she is nowadays. I just mean that these 7 years, the focus is on The Core Four journal and how they had changed throughout 7 years.

Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you, but for me the 'blood line'/family is important. And is no coincidence that Joyce dies in the same season when Buffy gets a sister.

No, it's okay. I really did forget the family bonding even I also think it's important. :)
I'm a huge fan of Faith with Angel! I think it would have been a very interesting bf/gf relationship but their actual relationship on the show was so interesting especially Five by Five and Sanctuary.

Actual relationships on the show, well i'm more of a Bangel and have been since the start of the show 🙂 Loved the Angel Episode.
