Re-watch discussion
episode 3 & 4
"Stage Fright" (1) and "Gray Hour" (2)

Discussion 1:

If I had come across the opening of this episode on TV I would have changed the channel. It's the kind of "super star" show you'd expect to see on the Bold and the Beautiful, meaning it just looks ridiculous to me. But it's Dollhouse so I'll plod on 😉

I'm loving Topher already, as well as Adelle, she's gorgeous and brilliant and more reasonable than Mr. Dominic.

I like seeing Boyd and Dr. Saunders interact even if it's a small thing and Topher joking about them disapproving of everything and having "scowly babies" together. I probably wouldn't have been as enthralled if I hadn't already seen the show though. A lot in Dollhouse seem to be built on these tiny, utterly neglectable moments, that you may not even catch onto unless you watch carefully or faithfully.

Enver, heart him! I really like him as Lubov. He makes him very likeable though I don't understand how the Dollhouse can have a doll who is, even as a fringe member, part of the Russian mafia. Cause let's face it, those aren't the kind of guys that just let you in their club... that takes time, bad deeds and trust being slowly built.

Speaking of Lubov. I know that the party scene where he meets Paul was originally in the pilot and I can see why. I think their talk about the Dollhouse is great and very natural. In this episode it seems kind of strangely squeezed in. But I'll take it. It has one of my favorite Dollhouse lines that I think about whenever something bad happens, which is Lubov's "Yeah, people are mostly crap."

Fantastic reveal of Victor as a Doll!
Also, I know this is doubly true for later fight scenes, but Paul is a superhero. Seriously, when that guy fights...

I like Eliza's voice! I love the little song she sings too, I have it on my iPod but I really do like her voice. I know I've seen that some don't, and I'm not saying that she's a singer on par with Rayna, but she has a perfectly fine singing voice (certainly better than mine 😉)

Oh my, Eliza. What happened to my shapely Slayer? I cringed during the costume change scene because she's just too skinny for my taste, it really doesn't look healthy at this point. :/

I really don't like Rayna's 'poor me' schtick but I love the way Echo handles it. (even if it's a bit cheesy at the end with the 'I wanna live, I wanna live') I love when she smacks her down with a chair, because at that point, who could've deserved it more? And that she goes off book and 'gets the job done'. Go Echo!

My favorite part of the episode is the ending and what is hinted at in the beginning (when Echo helps a dizzy Sierra and over her shoulder sees a Dollhouse employee watching attentively as well as Hern commenting on not wanting Echo to rub off on Sierra, though while both are printed) which is Sierra, with a smile, making her way towards Echo and Echo, noticing Hern's gaze, discreetly shakes her head - clearly aware that they are not allowed to be friends.

Every episode has a little hint like that. That Echo is more aware than the others and is evolving. I love that.

Discussion 2:
Seriously, a Doll negotiator made no sense to me but a Doll midwife! I would imagine it's heck of a lot cheaper to hire an actual midwife and fly her into the mountains than to hire a Doll to do so.

Unless the Dollhouse sends out their dolls sometimes, pro bono, or with people unaware, as a way to 'test the product'...

Another favorite moment of mine, is A. Topher and Boyd together. B. Topher calling Boyd is 'man-friend', and C. Bison.

Topher: "This is the herd."
Boyd: "They're not bison, Topher."
Topher: "They're a little bit bison."

All in all the plot of the episode is pretty good though I still think their non-romantic engagements are a bit of a stretch. Again, there are professional thiefs to hire that would probably be cheaper... like the other three guys with Taffy. Clearly the client has connections so what's the problem... why would he need a doll?

Nice twist with Echo not being a prostitute but in fact one of the crooks. I like Taffy, she was a fun character, she smart and snarky. The trapped in the bank vault thing is a little slow but interesting to think of an active, wiped, in the harsh environment of reality.

They should have made the guy Echo saved a doll. That was a great set up right there for a new character.

By the way, it's really creepy to think of hotels paying off mistreated professional girls to protect themselves and their clients...

Thoughts on the season so far:

You know I never had this problem before, because then I watched the show in a marathon and not weekly, but I really have a hard time connecting to the characters. I used to think that was silly when people listed that as a reason for Dollhouse failing - that you can't connect to a character who is wiped every episode - but it's true for me now. I struggle with caring about Echo and so far the episodes have all been very weak. The side characters are carrying it but just barely.

(3) Stage Fright: (title's a little bit cheesy imo)

- Man, I almost had an allegic reaction to the opening scene! Bland, generic, manufactured pop song crap. Blah!

- 'Wow, that girl's on fire. Not that girl, that girl!' 😀

- I like the set-up. A 'sleeper bodyguard' is a good reason to call in a doll, big need for subtlety/discression.

- Eliza has a great singing voice (surprise!) but it's a shame that she lost those awesome curves. I know she's supposed to be toned/athletic now to fit with the whole doll-thing, but I miss Faith's curvy-ness. 🙁

- Still loving Topher. 'You're going to get married and have scowl-y babies!' 🙂

- I like the Ludov/Ballard conversation, it digs a bit more into Ballard's motivation, but I agree that it belonged in the opening episode.

- I'm also not positive about Ballard's rational (although we, of course know that he's right on this), take cloning- the technology to clone has been around for ten years or so, cloning sheep and now some pets, Although we can clone humans (its not easy but its theoritically possible), we don't see armies of cloned soldiers or (more tellingly) clone harems everywhere, do we?
Unless of course its a secret conspiricy..😉

-However Ludov's reveal as a doll is very nicely handled, its just a shame he's not around much after this episode, he was really growing on me. ('You inspire terrible pity...')

- Plus, cool fight scene involving Ballard. That guy is hardcore.

- Isn't Audra the definition of 'adorkable'? 🙂

- Jordon is very Faith-like in her mannerisms, a tough, take-no shit kinda girl. Plus 'I'm a Southie' 🙂

- Yeah, I really didn't like Rayna towards the end there, her pity-poor-me I feel trapped has been done before, nice to see Jordans attitude towards it.
- Plus I love 'You can fire me, but bitch don't think you can take me!' Awesome. 😀
- Jordan hits Rayna with a chair. Yes! Wait, hang on?

- I actually really enjoyed the climax here, tense, exciting and really funny! I was laughing at what Jordan was saying even though I thought that she might hurt Rayna.

- The coda was nice, more hints that Echo is intrinsically special in some way, especially with the self-awareness at the end- Echo's little shake of the head to Sierra was a nice touch.

I liked this ep more than I remembered I did, but ultimately, because of the subject matter (pop star in danger) its still pretty generic, well-done generic.

That's the only real problem I have with the series so far, I'll expand on that a little later.

(4) Grey Hour

I'm a real sucker for heist flicks (well done ones) so I enjoyed this one a lot the first time, around...the second time around I'm not so sure. It was a clever idea (the remote wipe) but I couldn't shake the feeling that this happened way too soon (we're only 4 episodes in and a lot of the characters haven't really clicked for yet), but anyway...

- Doll midwife? Really? Why the hell- this doesn't make any kind of sense, you can get good, private mid-wives for very little cost. You could probably even fly them out to wheverever the hell they are (Europe somewhere? Tibet? I have no clue ) and it would still be cheaper than getting a doll.

Maybe if they'd hinted at the Mother-to-be having some sort of medical condition that would've made the birth especially tricky, but as it is... 😕

- But I really like the Topher/Boyd exchange- this is one of the fascinating parts of the show.
What makes us human? The conscious/the personality or the subconscious- all those little idiosincracies bubbling away underneath, hidden from view?
Or maybe a combination of the two? Can the subconscious even be wiped totally?

Human beings do have ingrained instincts; mob mentality- the desire to follow the heard, mathematically predicable behaviour, body language, all these things that we have little or no control over yet we do them anyway, instictually.
And it seems apprent that this happens even in the doll-state- or maybe its something more.
-Discuss? 🙂
' Are we all 'a little bit bison'?

- Oh, Taffy's outfit totally rocks. It really appeals to my Id. 😀

- I mean, Taffy is totally a 'sexy professional thief' cliche, but she's done really well, she's slick enough and her dialogue is good.
Like I said I love heist movies. Taffy is one of my favourite dolls. *wistful sigh*

- I like the damsel fake-out twist to get to the security office. Clever ruse, and I very much doubt that the security guard can honestly tell his bosses all of what actually happened- he'll look like an idiot.
Plus the whole 'paying of an attempted rape victim to save the hotel some embarassment' thing is utterly skeevy. And realistic. 🙁

- I was also thinking about why somebody would hire a doll instead of just getting a decent thief, but it actually makes a lot more sense I think. The client is confirmed as being somebody official within the Greek government- that doesn't lend itself to knowing many top-class criminals in America.
But what this client would want is no deaths, and absolute trust that they would not be double-crossed during a politically sensitive (for their government) robbery. Hiring a doll means eliminating a few variables. You get the best, trustworthy (they can't double-cross you) and professionally none-curious about their employer. A lot less risk than getting an actual thief to do it.
This is illustrated quite well when its the expert that double-crosses the criminals that Taffy ws in charge of.

- Hey I forgot about more Ludov! 🙂 Yay, but Ballard is a real bastard to him. Boo.

- Ah, the remote wipe. A taste of really bad things to come.

- Echo in the Big Bad world. 🙁

- 'I'm a bad guy?'
'You're a talking cucumber.' 😀

- I like Sierra as Taffy as well, she gets the personal ticks down wthout being obvious.

- The first real evidence that Echo as a doll can pick things up pretty darn quickly when she has to (i.e her life/the lives of others are in danger.) And she rescues the computers guy who was kinda nice to her/bonded with her over art.

Overall Thoughts- This is a good show, but its not a great show. In comparison to Buffy/Angel/Firefly it feels very...remote. It doesn't have that intimate 'I must watch the next episode because I care so much about these darn characters' felling that the other Whedon shows had by this point.

On the plus side its much better than AoS was at this stage. 😛

There are a few reasons for this, all the main characters are removed from each other. You have Topher/Boyd/Saunders on the Dollhouse floor, DeWitt/Dominic who are in charge, Ballard out on his own, Echo's developing sense of self, and then whatever 'personna' Echo is playing this week.
That's a lot of separate stories to invest in that don't really cross with each other. In Buffy/Angel/Firefly the whole cast were 'in it together' from the second episode on, you could root for them as a group.

Also there's no protagonist, Echo is pretty much a cabbage- albiet one who's becoming slowly self-aware, the 'dolls' stories aren't really real, Ballard is too removed from the main plot/action. Also so far he shown to be fairly uninteresting as protagonists go- but this does change in a couple of episodes.

The only characters we see regularly interact are Topher and Boyd. Topher's a likeable jackass and Boyd is...sort of a personal vacuum (but then he's meant to be)

The show really does improve when the seperate strands begin to interact a bit more, and when the backstory comes to the fore.

Overall a good show, but not a great show...yet. 🙂

Stage Fright-
-I think we all agree that the opening pop music scene was not good and not right for the shows opening.
-I like seeing the friendship between Echo and Sierra evolve even in doll state when Echo helps her off the treadmill.
-Was Mellie just waiting at the door for Paul to get home? Even Lobov says it. I really do like Mellie though.
-The scenes between Boyd and Dr. Saunders were great. I forgot about them and knowing where the show goes forward, I like the subtle foreshadowing. Plus Topher's comment about them was awesome.
-Adele mentions twins? Are there active twins? Why didn't we get to see that? I wanna see that story.
-The reveal of Victor was subtle and I remember the first time they got me good, I was so shocked and didn't see it coming. Now, I totally see it and I love Victor.
-I thought Eliza's singing was pretty good and then Rayna joined her and I could hear the difference. Still better than me though, and kudos to her for going there.
-Sierra as the geeky fan was so cute and totally believable. There are fans like that out there, and I think on the inside a lot of us are like that, just don't express it.

Gray Hour-
-Who is hiring Echo to be a mid wife? That sounds expensive just to give birth. I understand they want us to show that the dolls can be anything but without the details it doesn't make sense.
-I like the little ruse they use to get into the security office. Taffy is one of my favorite imprints because it's what Eliza is good at, a character similar to Faith.
-I really like Sierra's version of Taffy as well.
-Does anyone think that maybe they should have let the guy do the drilling instead of a Doll who doesn't even know what's going on.
-Boyd being a bit of a badass was awesome. I really like the introduction of Ivy and the contrast between her and Topher.
-I like Echo's line of 'I'm not broken' just another step in her evolution.

Oh my, Eliza. What happened to my shapely Slayer? I cringed during the costume change scene because she's just too skinny for my taste, it really doesn't look healthy at this point. :/

Have you seen her lately? She's even skinnier. I agree she looked best in S7/S4 of Buffy and Angel and on Tru Calling but she's fine here. Clearly comfortable with her body since we get another shot of her in a bra. Those thief guys didn't seem to mind. Gotta say I don't either. You see her legs in those leather pants/boots? Damn, I wish I could loo that good in leather. lol

- Isn't Audra the definition of 'adorkable'? 🙂
Agreed! I really like Sierra playing this character.

The season so far: I really like 2 out of the 4 episodes so far, so it's 50/50 I guess. I can understand that there are no relatable characters but there are likable characters so it doesn't bother me. At this point I just want to know more about Adele and what the Dollhouse is all about. The remote wipe and the reveal that Alpha is alive I guess makes me curious but it's not quite catching my attention yet. And I do like seeing Echo's character evolve, even if I can't personally relate to her.

ugh, yes I have seen her lately and I think it looks awful how skinny she is. It's just not my taste I guess.
Stage Fright has a story that is hard to tell without it getting a bit silly with the stereotypes.
And I don't think the manage to avoid that particular well.

Just a rather average episode that I have no problem forgetting again.

The one think I did like though was Echo's little head shake in the end.
I know they do this in pretty much every episode here in the beginning but I thought it was a nice touch and well executed.

One thing I never understood. Not sure if I missed it or if it was never explained.
But why did they plant Sierra there as the super fan?
What purpose did she have?
They didn't seemed to have put in any protecting mode like they did with Echo, so why?

Gray Hour I really liked. Had some nice twists that kept my interest.
Taffy's kind of character is always fun.

Loved how Topher kept declaring that it wasn't his fault and he could not have foreseen it.

Overall I would say that so far Topher is the best thing with Dollhouse.
He manage to be a jackass that still are great fun and likeable. Not bad. 🙂

Ballard's storyline is not getting my attention though.
Think it doesn't get connected enough with the other storylines.
I know this will get better later on so I'm just waiting for now...

Well they mention that she's the "back up" but like you said she didn't seem to have any protective parameters so it doesn't make much sense ( except that they wanted Echo's and Sierra's friendship to grow. )

Agree on Topher, entirely 🙂

I agree. I'm not interested in his character right now, but it will get better. I'm not really sure what his motive is, other than he thinks these people are in trouble. Which is fine but I think if maybe he had more of a connection to the Dollhouse it would be a better motive that I care about. Cause what is he going to do when he finds the place? Like if he had a brother or sister that went missing and he suspects the Dollhouse or something like that to give him more of a relatable drive. Something that the audience can connects to, cause most of us are not FBI agents trying to bring down corporations and expose corruption. So I'm waiting to see more involvement from Paul Ballard.

I really think they missed a trick not giving Ballard a personal connection to one of the dolls, maybe Caroline, maybe not.

Just something to better explain his obsession rather than 'it's in his nature' or 'Caroline is a damsel in need of rescuing.'

They explore some of his motives later on, (episode 6 I think) but its really only Tahmoh's performance that makes me believe in Ballard as a character, not the writing itself.

Agreed, his obsession with Caroline has always been a little bit weak/iffy to me. If they had had an actual real life personal connection before she was a Doll it would have made so much more sense!

Ah, I missed the thing about backup.
That was kinda my guess anyway, but since she didn't act like a backup I started to wonder.

True, as you all say, without any personal connections his obsession just seems strange.

Stage Fright

Eliza's singing, holy smoke I'd buy an album, that was fantastic.

That celebrity, one word, annoying. I almost felt bad for her half way through the episode, and I thought it was a great plot twist that she was more of a danger to herself than anything else, but dam by the end there I really couldn't feel bad for her. I did like Echo in this one though, that was pretty flipping bad ass how she dealt with everything.

Sierra, wow didn't even recognize her at first. I love that there's a bond forming between Sierra and Echo. And as always Victor is just my favourite. I do wish I was watching this for the first time, this is a show that is highly focus on surprised reveals, so the rewatch value goes down a bit. It's still enjoyable, but discovering all the "secret" dolls for the first time is pretty mind blowing.

I'm not a fan of Paul to be honest. His attitude grates my teeth a bit, it's like he doesn't really have a motive beyond proving everyone that he's right. I agree that him having a connection to Caroline or someone else would improve the storyline. Right now I just feel like he's ready to go to any ends just to prove that he's right. I mean, the guy is pretty badass, but he's not likeable. I also feel bad for Meli, she's super sweet.

One more thing, this episode was just too cliche. I mean, they could have at least picked a "crazy fan" that wasn't so generic. The guy looked like the typical guy that people assume does things like that. Kuddos to the actor though, he was really good in the role, I just wish things would be a bit less stereotypical.

Yea he just looked like a creepy, obsessive fan. Maybe if they set him up to be the killer but then switches to someone we wouldn't suspect might have been better, or maybe worse, idk.

So what did you think about 'Gray Hour'?

Agreed.

It's mainly the actor that saves the character, otherwise he's really genenric- incredibly so given that this is a Joss Whedon show- he tends to askew cliches completely, or at least try and subvert them a little, give them a few layers.

It does make me wonder...Joss has admitted in interviews that he has a big 'man crush' on Tahmoh as a person, (Which I completely get- I love the guy in everything I've seen him in.) and I wonder if this 'bled through' into the writing and Joss decided to make Ballard a straight up uncomplicated 'action hero-type', which he's never done before.

I mean the closest 'heroic' leading man type before hand had been Malcolm Reynolds, and Fox had to request that Joss 'lighten' the guy up considerably to be much
more affable/heroic- to begin with he was very dark.- a damaged veteran type.

It's actually a descision I totally agree with, Nathan Fillion's strength is that he can play somebody with a real roguish charm to him- like Castle or Hal Jordan...cartoon Hal unfortunately. 🙁

Anyway- like Ballard, but he's far from my favourite character. 🙂

Favourite's tend to be Echo, Topher and DeWitt in no particular order.

Totally agreed! And I also really like the actor playing him, so at least that saves the character a bit for me, but aside from that, not too impressed with his arc so far.
So what did you think about 'Gray Hour'?

I just finished watching it 🙂

Like everyone, I think the whole midwife thing was a bit ridiculous, but I don't really doubt for a second that if dolls would really exist, rich enough people would be willing to use the service for really anything and everything. If something exist, we use it. It's like why buy a Cadillac when you can get a Toyota Corolla. They do the exact same thing, but the Cadillac is all shiny and full of gadgets, a bit like dolls. If the Dollhouse existed, I'm almost positive humans could become objectified in such a way.

The heist plot was pretty cool, again, I seem to be someone that kinda agrees that dolls would be better to use than a simple professional.

I used to think that Eliza's acting was on the weaker side in this, now I think I'm realizing it might just be the writing. Echo keeps being imprinted with essentially the title of professional badass, which Eliza plays well. But that doesn't give her a lot to play with. I think she's doing a good job with what she has.

Sierra and Echo both playing Taffy, that was really well done. Kuddos to the actresses.

Paul is kind of a jerk. I don't like him.

The bison thing was hilarious.

Overall thought:
I'm having a bit of the opposite reaction as Taake. I find myself really connecting with some of the characters this time around. Actually, I find this whole show so intriguing and I really empathize with the doll. When Victor said he'd want to know about the dollhouse so that he could become a doll broke my heart a little bit. I feel like I just want to learn more about the backstory of each character.

It also help that I'm a huge science geek, so this idea of imprinting is just really cool. It's the kind of thing that I would kill to study, but wouldn't really want to apply.

Agreed. I used to think Eliza's acting was poor but now I don't have a problem with it. It's not as good as when she's Faith, but not as bad as I remembered. Whether it's bad writing or maybe I'm just used to seeing it, but it's not as bad as some other actors that I've seen. She gets to do more acting wise in later episodes so It'll be interesting to see how she does and if I change my mind.

I kind of know what you mean about the dolls. It's kind of sad but also interesting that Echo is finding out who she is and what it all means. Victor is great, and yea you can kind of imagine that certain people who have terrible lives would probably sign up to be a doll just so they can forget. It is a little heartbreaking to think about, but that's what I like about the show is that it makes you think about all of these 'what ifs'.

You know I think it is interesting that one can really imagine that there would be people who would sign up to be Doll's voluntarily.... there's obviously an appeal in the 'theory' of it. But that's what I think is so interesting about the show and the places where they dare to take it because initially it sounds 'okay' I would say. I could understand the motivation behind it (even if five years is a very long time) because you can reason your way out of things like sexual encounters etc by reasoning that it wasn't really you.

What I think the show does so well is take it that extra step where it shows you just what is so bad about being a Doll. Your powerlessness, the vunerability, the fact that they can do anything to your body and even if they decided to never give it back you would never know... unless they put you in another body, which they could, and which is frightening. They could imprint ten dolls with you and they would in fact all be you.

Being pampered, oblivious and rich at the end of it doesn't seem like such a bargain the more we see of the Dollhouse and its inner workings, which I think is important because lets face it - even if you don't know what you've been doing - those five years of doing things for other people is a pretty hefty price tag at the end of the day.

I think this is funny. Maybe it's because I felt like I connected so much with the characters the first time around that I now view it the opposite way? Maybe one needs to go through both sides 🙂

Agreed. The idea of imprinting is something that technically and morally speaking I feel I would just want to study to the end of times. It is insanely interesting (and scary) but yes, definitely not something I would want to apply...

Stage Fright is definitely one of my least favorite episodes. It still has some nice moments though. Like Echo's head shake at the end. Oh and is it just me or does the crazy stalker fan really looks like Jake Gyllenhaal? 😛

Gray Hour isn't that special, but it did enjoy watching it. I particularly liked how Sierra tried to tell Echo how to escape. I remember being convinced that they would succeed. Guess not lol.

I notice a lot of people are saying they are having a lot of trouble connecting to the characters at this point, especially Echo.
Maybe it's just me,but I never had any problems connecting with her, because they quickly dropped hints that she was starting to become aware.
I was always excited when she showed a sign of awareness again. 😀

It's just you, cause Jake Gyllenhaal is a cutie and crazy stalker guy is creepy. But yea Stage Fright is pretty bad. Yea I never really understood why people have trouble connecting but I guess I could see why.

I think its the eyes- Jake Gyllenhaal can have crazy eyes when he wants to. (has anyone seen 'Night stalker'?
But overall not so much (the stalker has this weird, long face), even I think Jake is a lot cuter than that.

I do love that climactic show-down between Echo, the stalker and the client (can't remember her name- lol)- it's actually really funny. 🙂
That's right- it's 'Night crawler'- i was typing 'stalker' too many times. 😳

It's a good movie though, worth catching. 🙂
