Way to go Eliza. What with this, Banshee, and her Dear Albania documentary, she's really getting involved this year.

My thoughts on this
Politically: Free college education for all... sounds like a fairytale...

Generally: I think good for Eliza that she's getting involved and is passionate but oh lord... people who aren't public speakers, really can't hide not being public speakers can they? Or maybe she should've just had someone else write her speech for her. I'll agree that this was a good phrase: "If we don't do politics, politics will do us", but the rest of it was not... great. Or maybe it's just me who prefers something a bit more polished.

My favorite part of this video is the guy in the red sweater behind her... he mesmerizes me...

I'm not surprised, Bernie has a massive student/young people following and Eliza is both.
The speech is so-so but that line is destined to be a t-shirt.

And hey, at least the guy stands for something outside the mainstream- unlike Hilary who, everytime I see her, looks like a robot trying to imitate human mannerisms. It's creepy.

I never understood this. I remember I tweeted to Michael Moore one time, about the benefits of free higher education, he retweeted it, and I got a load of abuse from Americans calling Scotland a third world country and other nasty stuff.

Maybe they agree with terrorists who believe education is an evil force. 😱 It is honestly the most bizarre stance to take on educating your population. I'm only speaking for myself, but I'd rather my taxes went into my education system than abroad to kill poor people in cyclical wars.

I fear you maybe right. But it certainly should be more affordable than it is, in this country and American at least.

I guess it may not be feasible in the US, there does seem to be a bit of demonisation of the whole thing, even teachers are looked upon with scorn by some politicians. I just wish the people, rich or poor, got the same opportunities I did. It's very sad.

I think its the same in this country myself. Maybe not as extreme, but still far from ideal. I think what we're saying is that in an ideal world education would be free, but things have just changed too much for that to happen now.

With a reasonable minimum wage more people paying taxes...without those corporate loop holes that allow many companies to pay ridiculously low tax. More taxes fund education, infrastructure, healthcare. Less poverty and better education lowers crime and incarceration rates.

It's feasible if we make it happen. People who claim defeat prematurely don't accomplish things. Democracy was once considered unrealistic. So many things that were considered impossible have been made possible by determination, hard work and sacrifice. Woman's vote, civil rights etc.

And idealism is great.
However, I'm not "claiming defeat prematurely", this is just not a horse I'm betting for in the political game so to speak. Like all those things you listed - that's a lot of ducks to get in a row, I don't believe in the feasability of it. That's not defeatist to me, I just think there are other ways to redeem that system.

Well my opinion of her just went down because she's supporting Bernie Sanders.

There needs to be reform of/controls on endowments. Schools with these billions of dollar endowments should not be able to raise tuition every year and just keep growing endowments like they are a badge of honor. On the flip side, why should people expect something for nothing? If you need scholarships to go to college, then you need to work hard, put in the effort. Too many, and the facts that Bernie Sanders is still in this race proves it, think everything should just be handed to them.

I know what you mean, but then sometimes its like their damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they shining a spotlight on important issues like Clooney does then I don't mind it so much.

Really? I thought it was a great speech because it didn't resort to cliches and seemed to come from a very real place. I thought she knocked it out of the park personally😛

Clooney is a shining example of somebody who doesn't understand half the issues he mouths off about. He was mocked by South Park for a reason man, his Oscar's speech was like some epic parody.

A celeb who uses the influence for good? Somebody like Angelina Jolie who does humanitarian work or something like that. Or giving focus to charities or other worthy causes- that's doing it right.

She came out on twitter last year saying she was "independent thinker", when people called her a republican. So maybe she's changed?

I thought she came across as really ditzy, and it proved the point that actors should stick to speaking other people's words, not their own 😉

Yeah but the point is how far do you take your cynism on this. I'm sure people could pick all sorts of holes in Jolie's polictical campagins. To me Clooney always comes across quite well and the important thing is that he opens up these issues to a mainstream audience who otherwise wouldn't engage with them.

The Game donating $500,000 worth of bottled water to Flint, Michigan (when people like Madonna "pledged" a mere $10,000) is a perfect example of this, I believe.

This pretty much sums up my stance on the people sending bottled water.. and it does more harm that good. I cannot believe I actually agree with Michael Moore. But he too says stop sending bottled water.

"'You would have to send 200 bottles a day, per person, to cover what the average American needs each day,' he wrote. 'That’s 102,000 citizens times 200 bottles of water — which equals 20.4 million 16 oz. bottles of water per day, every day, for the next year or two until this problem is fixed.'"

He proposes that they should:

1. Evacuate any and all Flint residents who want to leave now. They’ve suffered long enough and, until the water is truly safe, no one should have to stay there who doesn’t want to. The state and FEMA should move people into nearby white townships that are still hooked up to Lake Huron water.
   
   
2. For those who choose to stay in Flint, FEMA must create a temporary water system in each home. One idea that has been suggested is to deliver two 55-gallon drums to every home in Flint. Each day water trucks will arrive to fill them with fresh clean glacial water from Lake Huron. The drums will have taps attached to them. People can’t be expected to carry jugs of water from buildings that are miles away.

Sending bottles of water does nothing but create a massive landfill problem.
