Emails pretending to be from the boards

This is just to caution you all about any emails you may receive from the address ************@gmail.com

These emails are not from the board! Any correspondence we would send out would come from a buffy-boards.com email address.

Someone has been using this address to send nasty email messages to our members. If you receive anything at all from this email address, please forward them on to me. Gmail is investigating the harassment and spoofing, and has asked us to forward on any additional emails to them.

I apologize to those of you who have received these messages, and thank you for helping us to catch the person who is doing this.

I've had the misfortune to see some of these anonymous messages (not directed at me I'm pleased to say) and it really annoys me when gutless no marks hide behind seemingly legitimate covers. Grow a pair whoever you are and have the courage to air your grievances with other members as yourself and not pretending to be part of the staff of this board - you cowardly tosser!

It is clear that it is someone who is or was a member here, so they must have gotten the email from the persons themselves. So no, that is not surely where they're getting them from.

the thing I find funny (not trying to turn people against one another here) is that its probbably someone whos already said how bad they think this is e.g "naughty person" to make people think its not them- I know by posting this ive also made myself look suspicius but tihnk of this -I dont know anyone on here. im still pretty much a newbie. I dont know anyones email and I havent given my email to anyone, I dont tihnk i will either since it says my whole name when i reply to one or send one. Just make sure your all really carefull with personal information since theres alot of people on this site. the info could go to anyone. Im not saying it was anyone whos posted on here already wither. im just saying dont rule anyone out and i hope no one emails me or I will be extremly aggrovated

Based on the people who've posted in here so far, I really doubt it.

It could literally be anyone, especially when you know who has received some of the emails - me!

The problem, however, from my point of view, isn't that this person sent the emails, its that they are pretending to be the Buffy-Boards.

After everything that has gone on here recently, this person is further trying to undermine the administrators and the board itself.

Also, reading the emails, its very obvious this person has very little in the way of intelligence and they are also very insecure.

The best thing of all though is that I got the emails.
Now, you guys know me, the idea that I have obviously upset someone enough for them to do this - its like a massive ego boost🙂

Why would someone do this? I'm just wondering. If they must email someone something nasty, why not say it to their face, or at least register a new, less recognizable email to use if they want to stay anonymous? The boards' reputation shouldn't have to be tarnished just because some idiot was dissatisfied with certain members. Hopefully you find the culprit soon!

After I read Buffy S.'s post I checked my own account, and it seems that by default our Contact Info is accessible to Everyone (mods correct me if I'm misunderstanding the CP). That's how mine was anyway as of today, and I didn't set it to that myself.

But it turns out it's really simple to obscure your contact info from the default "Everyone" setting:
1.) Click "User CP" (top left of the page)
2.) Click "Profile Privacy" (upper left of the sidebar)
3.) Change the Contact Info Drop Down Menu to your liking

It might be best to at least restrict contact info to the Registered Members option, rather than to the Everyone option by default...

I changed mine, you guys might want to fix yours as well.

Perhaps I didn't look carefully enough, but I don't think e-mail addresses are listed under the contact info. You can e-mail people through it, but only from the board. I don't think it actually tells you what the e-mail addresses are.
