You Can Call Me Ash
I mentioned elsewhere I have had an idea for a Faith backstory in the back of my mind for quite a while but never got round to it. After getting some inspiration earlier I decided to give it a go. Here is the first chapter.
Home
Faith opened the door carefully and slid her way through the gap, knowing that if it were to be opened too far it would only bump into the various bags of rubbish and old clothing that lay behind it. She walked forward and grabbed onto the door frame as she popped her head around the opened doorway of the front room. Smoke rose from a darkened corner and the glow of the television in the dark burnt into her eyes, her expression showed her pain, however it was not clear in the dark.
“I’m home mom.” Faith waited for some response, thinking to herself how stupid it was to expect one. After a short pause she spoke again, “I’m going out tonight mom, remember?” Again there was nothing. “Well, anyway, I’m just going up to my room and then meeting Jade. I’ll be home later.” Faith gave up all hope and left, closing the door a bit behind her and went up the stairs.
Once in her room she cracked open a window, it was cold but the room had become stuffy. The sharp wind caused corners of paper to flap like young birds but nothing moved. Her bag dropped onto the bed and fell onto its front, until Faith turned it around and opened it up. Her hand crept inside and she pulled out a few cards and even some small teddies and chocolates. A smile crept across her face momentarily as she placed them on her table, which is when she noticed something. There it stood, a stark white envelope with the word “Faith” written on it. She picked it up, almost trembling before she realised how stupid she was being. Placing a nail under a gap in the seal she tore across it horizontally and turned it upside down, catching the card as it fell out. She glared at it for a few moments; “Happy Birthday” was all it said on the front, the picture was not of anything in particular, it was as if it had been chosen for its ambiguity. Opening the card revealed her worst fears, “from mom.”
It fell to the floor and Faith kicked it away, she didn’t want to deal with the insincerity now. Instead she picked up her purse and a jacket from her wardrobe and shoved the purse in a pocket, along with her hands, and left her room. She galloped down the stairs and paused outside the front room, but didn’t even bother. The door slammed behind her.
The next chapter is much better, I really like it. Will post in a few days. I always try and write a chapter or two ahead so I don't give up.
