Faith's Prison

Faith Lehane is a criminal, obviously, so after she turns herself into the police she gets sentenced with two counts of murder and a life sentence of 25 years. Sending her to a prison facility in Stockton California. Does anyone know if the prison she is located at is maximum security, medium security, or minimum security facility?
Since when she gets visitors she has to be behind the glass with the phone, I would assume its max, but I want more details. Does anybody have some tidbits I may have forgotten?

Okay ignore that. She is definitely in max, I simply got confused because of timeline shenanigans. ( Based on my internet findings ) When you are sentenced to murder you are automatically placed in max, and must stay there for up to 2 years. After that you can be moved down to medium, and to minimum if you show good behavior. Based on her talk about prison in s7 ( I think she mentioned movie night ) it sounded like she was in a minimum security facility which may have been true at the time. Since season 7 did take place around 2-3 years after she turns herself into the police, she probably had been moved to a lower security facility.

I don't know how it is in California, but in my state (WA) even maximum-security prisons might have things like movie nights. Even max prisons allow inmates to be in common areas, unless they are violent or otherwise need to be isolated. Since Faith seemed to behave herself in prison, she likely would have been allowed such privileges. But it's also true that some murderers will be housed in lower-security prisons.

I just wonder if she would have had cellmates. I don't think Faith would have done well crammed in a tiny room with another person (or more than one).

Since there were special schools for children like Gwen, and programs for those invisible like Marcie, it would make sense to have specialized prisons for those like Faith, though more focused on holding demons and witches (that sounds like a series, and a perfect way for Joss to steal the "I'm not locked up in here with all of you, you're all locked up in here with me" from Watchman, as I'm sure he would).

Now that I think about it, it's what Wolfram & Hart should've seen to it.

That would derail the story...but maybe we'd have gotten a better one (I say that as one who overall enjoyed the series we got) as Angel intervenes, or as its own brief series or movie (or comic series), and could even have it so Lilah provides a way (willing or not--she could EASILY be tricked by Wes, or even the fall of Wolfram & Hart could make it easier) for Wes to have access to her if they wanted to keep Faith's break out in the show.

Or she could break herself out (differently than in the show--perhaps she was added to the demon fight pits that we saw in season 1, or even a Hell dimension like in Anne where Faith leads others out of Hell much as Buffy once did)...which kind of messes up the metaphor, but the show messed up their metaphors for plot convenience and "cool story arcs" all the time anyway, and most of us learned to overlook it (especially if it really was where the rule of cool was the right choice). If the system is evil, then submitting to it is not the best way to atone...otherwise, maybe Angel should be in his own cell set up by the same people who work at Wolfram & Hart just as Faith was.


ETA: while I'm not experienced with this in California which may be different, even those in a Texas jail for misdemeanors required phones to talk with bulletproof glass separating them. At least once they've been sentenced to jail (not prison) time.

They had that with the prison that Skip guards in Angel S2, right? The guy was some telepath or something and was stuck in that awful fire cell.

Sounds very similar to Azkaban to have a place where all the bad wizards and slayers end up.

That was Billy, who was apparently able to amplify any misogenistic traits in a man to toxic levels. With later info showing us Skip was a bad guy, it's often debated that the whole thing was a setup to get Skip to be trusted later on.

There's a lot of difference in prisons, not only from state to state, but within states. And it's magnified by the fact that some of them are now privately run (8% of the 2020 prison population was in a private prison).

There are supermaxes, and then there's the other end. In 2002 my mom spent 6 months* in FPC (Federal Prison Camp) Bryan. Not only were they not locked in their rooms at night, but there was no fence around the premise. As I pointed out when I had visits with her outside, there was literally nothing keeping her from leaving the grounds. And as she pointed out the punishment for escape would certainly be much worse than the current sentences for anyone currently housed there.

*Mom participated in a protest at Fort Benning. She knew that if she entered the base grounds she'd be arrested and get 6 months. Aprox. 75-100 people were arrested every year. She made it because it was just after 9/11, but after a few more years the base became so tightly fenced that you couldn't trespass anymore (not without a major act of vandalism).
