Family friendly?

Okay...

...I'm officially at the end of my rope right now...

ANOTHER post of mine was deleted, where I believe the post read "Christian Bale is a hot piece of ass"

I've already PMed the mod responsible for deleting it...but if that is deemed too inappropriate for this board, then I will no longer be posting here. If I wanted to be in kindergarten, I'd get in a time machine. Absolutely unbelievable. And worst off, nerd4hire didn't even see fit to give a REASON for the deletion in the PM I received.

Absolutely beautiful.

Clap your hands!

Okay, this is not to dismiss my irritation, but I was just at a family dinner and drank far too much wine, so please disregard that above rant...I'll happily handle this via PM. This very well may not be a place I'm compatible with, but I'll figure that out without making a public drama out of it. Sorry.

Purp, I think what was more offensive was the part about him rubbing himself against her.. I dont think the hot piece of ass was but, the rubbing his parts (or whatever similar word you used) against her was what I think drew the deletion
Well, just a 2ç worth here, but it IS a "family" board around here. And there are things that can be taken way worse with almost the same wording or even intentions than if said another way.
Like Tara and Anya's conversation about playing "Shiver Me Timbers". I KNOW my kids have seen that scene and yet have NO idea what the heck is going on. Same with Tara asking Spike if he has a cramp in his pants.

The see the kissing and that is ALL they see. They have no clue about anything else, really. Although, once or twice on other TV shows my daughter's asked why no one on TV owns pajamas.

Granted, we don't have 6 year olds on the boards, but we do have people who are on the younger side. I know my kids wander over into my office while I'm reading and sometimes just when the boards are up and I'm out of the room or painting or working on something else. As a parent, I would have to say if I walked behind my kids on a message board and saw the Christian Bale comment that you claimed you made, even off hand, I'd probably stop and look closer at the very least.
Not that I don't AGREE with the Christian Bale comment. I have since I was 16.....but I think the term "yummy" says it without having to worry what someone younger or a parent might think about it.

Actually, I've been impressed with HOW giving the mods can be with such stuff.
As another, just side note, if these boards work like the one I've been working on, the PM about your post being edited just kinda sends itself out, so N4H may not have had the opprotunity to get in depth about it right then and there.
Granted, I suppose he could have fired off another PM shortly after it, but I kinda gotta agree a little bit with TK...if you've had them edited before for almost the same reason....maybe he thought you'd "catch on".

I do feel for you. It's hard to feel censored, especially if you aren't meaning to be offensive at all. And, it's easy to take it hard. I wasn't exactly graceful myself when it happened to me. ( *hugs any PTBs I may have lunged at with rabid teeth. ) But, I do think you have a place here. Maybe, instead of feeling like you're being fussed at, imagine my daughter who's not even through 1st grade and learning to read turning to ask me "What does that mean, Mommy?" (and the wrath you'd incur from ME if I have to explain something I don't want to) and try twisting it in a way that leaves her thinking YOU people are NUTS but me not having to explain anything.
Like Spoons does! 😉 She's actually gotten VERY good at it. (Of course, she IS nuts, but that's not the point here.)

*Giant round of applause for Spoonie-poo!

Your post was removed because of another comment made in the same post which I am not going to repeat on here as you have been dealing with N4H and i'm sure he has explained what part was removed and why.

Okay, so stupid question, If you are old enough or responsible enough or even watch the show wouldn't you come to the forum.
it's late and christmas if that doesn't make since i will have to edit it later.

If you come to this board, doesn't that mean you have watched the show, I don't think there are many fifth graders going "I think I might visit Buffy Boards" without seeing the show first. keeping in mind that the shows have adult content. pretty visual sex, adult language, sexual references, medium violence (Wesley even had his throat slit in one episode) I'm sure they probably see worse on Bob The Builder, on a serious note I can see the need to keep it safe and family friendly, but atleast you could keep it in line with the shows. they probably have heard worse on the simpsons.: popcorn:

Read what Lou just wrote. And yes, we do have members that are 12-13 years old. Hence the family friendliness.
Once again, I apologize for my last post on this thread. I came on here after having drank way too much wine, which is not to dismiss my accountability, but was the driving force behind the madness. I had forgotten about the dirtier comment in my post on the Batman thread (that's how natural it comes to me, it doesn't even stick out! 😀) As much as it irritates me in a way to be censored, I certainly don't care to the point I'd pitch a fit every time it happens, so I promise it won't happen again unless I feel it was REALLY unfair 😛.

Anyway, I also apologized to nerd4hire via PM (geez that dude has sass! 😛), and promise to not be a rampaging bitca until at least after the New Year!

My intention was to leave this thread alone. The reason being my understanding of the way Angel Investigations works is you ask a question. You get an answer. Generally the thread is then closed. As an example of how open this board can be this thread was left open for discussion. Nevertheless the question was answered, if I pile in with my extra weight, it looks like mods piling on the members, so I avoided it.

However, I see my name up there. Therefore it may be helpful if I offer my particular interpretation of board policy here, so you know where I'm coming from if your post should disappear.

Here's the way I figure it. Somebody's a fan of the Buffy series. She says to herself "Hey, I'm going to put up a Buffy Board for myself and other fans to enjoy discussion on. I want it to be a board all can enjoy regardless of sex, age, race, or sexual persuasion." She bucks up her site fees, puts up the board, finds mods, and communicates to them the kind of board she wants. People check it out. If they like it they stay.

OK, so far, no problems. But now let's say somebody arrives who takes objection to something somebody else says. He replies, "You should be raped". I see it. Presto. That post disappears. I receive an angry PM.

"How dare you delete that post. Have you ever seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Rape is an issue often dealt with. It's one of Marti Noxon's favorite themes. Grow up."

I reply, "First of all Bud, you're not Marti Noxon. I don't know where you got the idea you were. The policy here is if you're making others feel personally uncomfortable, it doesn't fly. Live with it. Discussion of adult themes and use of such language, has as you may have noticed been oft allowed here. Put your thinking cap on. Try to figure out why their posts were allowed, and yours was not. Also I'd suggest you do not continue posting remarks others might find personally offensive. If you do, I can pretty much promise you you'll be getting some time to yourself to ponder the issue of what works here, and what doesn't"

Still don't get it? Let's discuss context. I sometimes see threads in the Social Studies forum discussing the television series South Park. You can do that. Here's an example of what you can't do.

There's an episode of South Park, I believe it's called "The N word". In that episode they don't just use the phrase "the N word" they use the actual N word. They use it a lot.

Now suppose you make a leap in logic there, and assume that therefore authorizes you to use the N word on the thread in pretty much any context you choose.

I see it. The post disappears. I get a PM...

"Hey Dum Dum, how can you delete that post. The word is in the freaking episode. It appears 21 times. I only used it 15."

I reply...

"Here's a YouTube link to CNN discussing that episode.

YouTube - CNN Comments on the SouthPark Word Episode

You'll notice they don't use the actual N word. Why do you think that is? Figure it out. Get back to me".

Oh wait after laboring through that massive missive, I just realized I can explain all this in a line or two.

If you post a thread titled something like "When Did Willow Realize She Was Gay", that sort of thing never has, nor will it ever be tampered with. If you post negative karma to somebody you've been arguing with, and it says "You're Gay", then I see it, kiss it goodbye. If it's particularly uncalled for in context, you just might get one of my legendary "sassy" PMs.

I was never privy to this information, I was just wondering as the age limit on the age lockout on cable, dvd purchase age etc. would limit the people who even know about buffy remember it hasn't aired in five years, there is a completely different generation now.

Yeah my previous message sort of made sense, I can understand sleep deprived me, but no one else can.

about the Simpsons somethings can be worse then things seen all the time keep in mind I said "All the time" there are some things that would never be in the simpsons eg. Rape, etc.

And I was speaking in context, ofcourse, I don't think the N word should be used openly, but that word isn't offensive unless your black (African American: So as not to offend anyone).

Airam

Hmm, I have to strongly disagree with that last comment, I'm greatly offended by the use of the N word and I'm not African American.
Sorry if double posting is not allowed but for some reason it doesn't allow me to edit any posts hrm

This is just addressing the comment on the last post.

That's kind of my point, there is no way to make this forum completely free from anything offensive. it's that one thing, can offend someone and not another person, this is without going in to mis understandings and such, i'm not saying that it's not an offensive word. use in the certain contexts it's a very offensive word. but just talking about it, something seen on tv. i wouldn't think anyone would view as offensive. I may be wrong ofcourse, as a point of reference I use the fact, that American movies make Australia out to be a dessert with a few bars and every calls everyone mate. and Australia is nothing like that we are closer to America now, then most other places in the world.

Anyway, the context of the word, gives it, it's meaning offensive or not. that's like not allowing B*tch to be posted as it's a female dog, but also a swear word in the eyes of man/woman.

I really didn't intend to get in this deep into this topic, but society and culture is one of my favorite topics, so i don't mind.

(Only post i seem to be able to edit)
EDIT: If you don't mind me asking, doesn't freedom of speech affect this as well, when I was going over Purple's post they mentioned "I don't mind you censoring me" wouldn't censoring come under the freedom of speech as Government's aren't allowed to do that. This is not some smart ass ploy using law against this board, I understand you need to keep order, but how much can you limit, ofcourse offensive uses of words and violence are not affected by this as they are covered under other laws.

You'll have to clarify that for me Echo.

Are you saying you think the adult themes seen in the series are never discussed here. On that you'd be wrong. They are, and often. Do you remember Spike's famous quote, "Five words. Out-for-a-walk-bitch". That gets quoted a lot here, and we're pretty sure he's not talking about a female dog. 😉

Stuff doesn't get deleted here for discussing what one sees on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. It might get deleted for being purposefully insulting in a racist, or misogynistic manner, or looking to cause personal offense, illegal, or even in some cases challenging what the mother of a thirteen year old Buffy fan might want her child to see on the internet (and believe it, or not, even mothers of Buffy fans have restrictions). You know, stuff like that.

Are you saying there should not be boundaries to any sort of speech in any public forum? That would just be silly. Taken to the extreme you'd be talking child molesters trying to make dates on Hannah Montana boards, and advocating for their right to be there based on their right to freedom of speech. And no, as far as I know there are no freedom of speech laws anywhere in the world that would cover that sort of thing.

The thing is there are boundaries, on every board. Some are slacker than others. One assumes the people who come here are generally comfortable with the boundaries they find here, or they'd go some place with fewer entries in the FAQs.

Here's one I hope you're not saying. I don't think you are, but it has been tried. Are you saying that now that you're here the established boundaries of this site have to change? That never works, you know? No amount of whining, sophistry, game playing, or attempts at silly twists in logic has ever been successful over the long haul. I don't get those guys that try that one. Wouldn't it be easier just to learn the rules, and try to get along.

Keep in mind i'm talking with no evidence i'm just reading what people have written and talking as a third observer as Social Interaction and Society and Culture interest me.

I was simply saying that making the board less mature (I'm looking for the right word, banning themes that are in the show from been discussed not topics seen in show) is a little strange, I only have the previous posts to go on in this thread. mainly I wondered if some mods were deleting things because they personally took offence to them, even though the majority wouldn't. more the criteria than anything.

No there should defiantly be boundaries, just not below those seen on the show, But of course I'm not trying to change it, if something wasn't working it would have been changed a long time ago, I really don't think that one person can change the world. and i'm surprised that others have tried with a community so large.

If you don't mind me asking, doesn't freedom of speech affect this as well, when I was going over Purple's post they mentioned "I don't mind you censoring me" wouldn't censoring come under the freedom of speech as Government's aren't allowed to do that.

Yes, however, when you agree to join Buffy-Boards you agree to all of their bylaws, one of which states "By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."

It is no different than the 'real-world' where you join a club or organization and are expected to abide by their standards. Purp, or anyone else (myself included) which has had posts edited or deleted have broken the rules, or at the least, seemed to have broken the rules, by which we said we would conduct ourselves on this forum. So, when you fail to comply with the rules set in place you have removed those freedoms from your implied rights to post on Buffy-Boards.

I personally feel that Mods, inc. have more of a problem with messages that are overtly explicit. Successful use of the double entendre, can get your message across in a means which doesnt (often! except by faithy, she is a mean mean woman 😛) get edited.

Plus free speech only applies to government, and this is a private organization. ;)
I didn't think I needed to post in this thread, because the other staff members have explained things quite well I think. But I guess I'll throw in my 11 cents to hopefully make things clearer...

The goal here - and has been since we set it up in 2002 (actually 2001) - is to have a community that is pleasant for all to be a part of. It's not just younger members that we're looking after, but everyone. Most of the time I personally don't want to have to read posts of a graphic nature. And if I did, there are plenty of places out there where I could read it. It's not about censoring. There are two words censored on this board, the ones that never have a legitimate use (the f and the c words). If I was all about censoring what people have to say, I'd do what most boards do and load the auto censor up with every swear word I could think of. Like has been said, it's all about how you use your words.

Now people can give the whole "they do/say it on Buffy" argument. That's fine. You can discuss anything that happened on the shows and you'll see we allow it. But if you're mature enough to watch Buffy and Angel, then you're also mature enough to discuss things without using inappropriate language that serves no purpose other than to make others uncomfortable. And let's face it, the things people are upset about being censored were not used in the context of discussing the show, and the same idea could have easily expressed using better language. And as we are all fond of saying, tv is not real life. We need to hold ourselves to a different standard than we hold a television show.

We want everyone to be able to enjoy their time on the board and not be subjected to vulgarity - that goes for me, and you, and the young members here. Young members who shouldn't have to have their board priviledges revoked by their parents when said parents see something inappropriate on this board. That has happened, more than once, on this board and on others. And that's not fair to those kids who just wanted to post about the show they love.

I don't believe what we do is censorship. We aren't telling anyone their ideas are not allowed to be expressed and discussed. We just expect people to write those ideas down in an appropriate manner, like we know you can. And it's not about trying not to be offensive to anyone. We deal with each suspect post on an individual basis. There aren't tightly defined rules about it purposefully, to give us the leeway to read the context and intent.

There are plenty of boards out there that let you act how and say whatever you please. If you don't like how we do things here, you are free to go there. But this board is never going to be one of those boards.

I'm not sure it's a fan club, at least for me, but I DO trust them to do what they think is right. They seem to discuss things constantly! I have NO idea how they have a life!
Or maybe they just enjoy having a more pleasant space to post in?
LOL, I'm just not gonna win here, am I?

I think I've decided this is no longer a place I wish to continue spending my time. Watching people begging for mod approval like puppy dogs is making me feel like I'm in a big sheep herd...and clearly I'm looked down upon for not wishing to conform to standards of what a very select, uptight group of people feel constitutes "pleasantness"...sayonara...haters rejoice. Makes me a little sad that these are the kinds of people who share my love for BTVS.

I've never noticed anyone "winning" in these kinda things...everybody just sorta...lets it go, sorry, being honest (that was a jk btw, so don't hurt me) Anyway, just saying, I got no problemo with anyone here...ILY ALL....oh, and i'm pretty sure I've fallen in love with Lurker's banner

I like ya dude, though I think you really need to let the little stuff go. No sense getting worked up over something so minor. But if being able to speak as you see fit on a public board is that much of an issue then I guess I'll talk to you later.. what would Cordy say?

and if we are beggin for mod approval like puppy dogs, wouldnt that be the dogpound you are feeling like you are in a not a sheep herd? sticking to one analogy really works best

I've not seen the post(s) that Purple is referring to but as someone who's probably had a post or three removed (and not noticed to be honest) I really don't think it's that big of a deal. Sure it's a pain in the arse to have a post removed from a thread that you feel strongly enough about to post in but sometimes it happens. The mods here aren't that hard on the membership - and I've been a member of a few boards where the mods would censor almost every post made.

This boards mods could be a whole lot worse in regard to the censorship of threads/posts than they actually are - and that (increased censorship) would change the overall feeling that this board generates in me and probably all of the other members that visit the site on a daily basis. Apart from a love of BtVS and AtS, I'm sure that a lot of people come here for the camaraderie and for want of a better word, friendships that they create with the other members and the mods.

Sorry for the ramble.
